    I've decided to put the kempers to the test against real amps at Bethel to see how they perform! In the kempers, I am running some profiles of my amps I created - a UK made Vox AC30 6/tb and a Fender Prosonic. In the "cabinet" slots of the kempers I am running impulse responses I made of my speakers in those amps - a UK celestion greenback and celestion / fender custom shop G10 Vintage that is in the prosonic. The IR's and Kemper Profiles are available for download on my website now!:

    Great video David - thanks for doing this in such detail. Luke asked me about my Kemper when we played just before you guys at BCDO a few years back. I’ve used mine for all live and recording stuff since 2016 - for me it’s a no brainer. I still love amps and use them on occasion but for travelling or home recording or quick setup time in church (we don’t own a venue), the Kemper is king for me. Another fun thing to try is splitting your drive pedals into an amp and then running the Kemper with stereo wet effects for a huge wet/dry/wet sound 🙌🏼

    In the mix they both accomplish the same thing but in isolation the real amps have more low mids and smoother high end!

    For me, Kemper is the way. Reliable and transportable. Thanks once again for this video David. You are the man.

  • @TheAngelEmpire
    @TheAngelEmpire Před 4 lety

    Great video! Both sound amazing! I think it comes down to practically, consistency and delivery and the Kemper does that really well. EQ can always be adjusted anyways and in a mix context there's no way to know which is which without side by side comparisons.
    I'm excited that technology in the guitar world is growing and getting so close to the "real deal". I think amps will always be better and they're becoming the "desktops" in the studio and the Kempers the "laptops" of live/tours (if that makes sense..) I think we are in an AWESOME time for guitar playing!

    Great vids man. Both definitely had a very similar character. I felt the combos had a larger/more open mid range which I preferred, but wouldn't describe as "better" quality. Obviously 100x more noticeable when solo'd. Also nice to see some Prosonic love out there. Such a sleeper of an amp!

    I TOTALLY understand the bias towards real amps. And when I switched to Helix I found that in a mix it sounded great but it didn't feel authentic in my ears while I was playing(only had it 2 weeks). But in this case I feel like the Kemper has to be the best option. When you consider all the profiles you can store and the lack of space that the Kempers take up and the fact that you can't really tell a quality difference when compared to real amps. I'm sold!!

    Both sound killer. I think everyone would agree that if the ideal amp in a room set up was an option with no draw backs we would prefer it. But those who have to lug amps to and from the kempers are well worth it! The subtle difference out weigh the drawbacks of using them. Plus, Bethel’s tone is literally heaven on earth haha so I bet anything you guys touch would sound killer!

    Using an axe fx 3 for worship. Traditional amps would be great but you just can’t beat the convenience of these rigs. We are running this location out of a school so setup and tear down is a factor. Please please release those axe fx presets soon ;-) stoked you will have them for sale. • @JoeStivey
    @JoeStivey Před 4 lety +1

    I didn’t pick up on the ‘inconsistent break-up’ on the amps but did notice what seemed to be a missing low mid frequency in the Kempers. I only noticed because you did an A-B comparison & wouldn’t be able to tell otherwise. The result is the Kempers have a little less punch & body which equates to less energy but a slightly cleaner product in the mix. It’s a bit like when you record something and then remove any background noise from that track.

  • @acer993
    @acer993 Před 4 lety +4

    The transients seem “faster” on the Kemper, while the amps seem more compressed on the attack. I like the feel of the compression that you get with a real amp and find it very inspiring, but like you said, Kempers are more reliable...and I’m sure FOH would prefer the fast attack of a Kemper. Seems to push out the melody more in a mix.

    There is a noticeable difference between the two samples when isolated. In the context of a mix, they’re close enough for me.
    Been playing the Helix and for about 7 months after ditching my tube amps, Strymon pedals, boutique overdrives, etc.

    They both sound great, although nothing can beat the sound of a great player, some good pedals and a great tube amp and the touch sensitivity,the wormth,the natural power section overdrive of a tube amp..They are really close.Close enough that the benefits in reliability of something like the kemper is worth the difference in tone.So for the road,i'll just stick to the kemper

    I’ve only played a Kemper once and am considering one in the future. Something I think would be helpful is a video comparing the sound of one Kemper running stereo effects in the effects loop, recorded in stereo. Then compare it to running two different profiles on two Kempers running the stereo effects into the front of each. Basically to inform people (like me) whether or not two separate Kempers are worth it for a “better” stereo image.

    • @dustinmccrindle343
      @dustinmccrindle343 Před 4 lety

      Have you considered a Helix or Headrush? Or even the Yamaha THR100D dual, if you want to run pedals through it (though the interface and IRs may not be as good)
      Blending different amps can really fatten up the tone you get! Much like really good chocolate, it may not be NECESSARY, but it sure is so damn GOOD.

  • @jeffwatson7811
    @jeffwatson7811 Před 4 lety +2

    For those of us running in mono, which of your amp profiles would you use to best capture your main tone (with pedalboard)? Would you consider making a blended profile with the AC30 and prosonic?

    • @DavidHislop
      @DavidHislop  Před 4 lety +1

      Jeff Watson I love the sound of both amps but I’d say the AC30 pack is a good one to start with because It actually comes with profiles of both of my UK AC30’s so you are technically get two amps in that pack.
      Some have asked about the blended profile thing - that this point no plans to do that but I might look into it and see if it sounds good.

    I think for touring purposes, Kempers would be the way to go as it's easy to transport and plugin. Amps sound great in the studio as long as the guitar player or engineer EQs it and set up a microphone properly.

    I personally feel like the Kemper's transients are more defined and plasticky. They stand out more in the mix than the amps, which sound more round and lush to my ears. I'd pick the amps over the Kempers all day if I had the ways to do it and the roadies to set them up every gig. Since I'm not there yet, I'll stick to my Kempers.

      oceantracks So true! The variables are endless in shaping the final mix. I guess many of us never settle for “99% tone” and the quest for perfection goes on. If everyone on the team (not just guitars) pushed for the same, how much better would the overall sound be? I would like to hear that or at least a simulation of it.

      @@WorshipGuitarTheory I'm just waiting for someone to hear a hit record on the air and say "Oh, man, no that's a Kemper those aren't real"....when that happens, I'll worry about it ;) It also depends on the piece of music. Is it a solo guitar part, in the intro to a song? Are they stacks of crunch guitars in a chorus? Etc...In this example as I mentioned, a bit of EQ and/or other processing (UAD AMPEX for example) would have rounded off the sharper attack of the Kemper easily...I actually liked the Kemper better, and I've grew up in the Sixties with all the usual suspect amps;)

    I feel like a lot of musicians, let alone average joe's/janes, wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I find the real amps have a nicer (to my ears) attack. That being said that kind of detail will get lost in 95% of mixes.

    Amps!! The Kemper craze is out of control.

    I tried a Kemper hooked up stereo to two FRFR speakers. It sounded like a damn toy. Maybe it sounds real hooked up to your computer, but that's not what I was looking for. I walked away with a handwired tube amp. People, don't buy this until you try it.

    To my ear, the amps win. More organic, more alive. I no longer use my amps, but if I could, I'd take them with me to performances. That said, Kempers still get it done.

    Why do guitarists always end a great video by spoiling it with but I still prefer real amps, it's like they think G-d will strike them down if they don't choose tubes over digital. :) You could just say the difference is so minuscule that it makes no difference!

      The key words “always” and “prefer real amps” .. you answered your own question. Most guitarist prefer real amps. 😀

    Kinda lame you only compared 2 seconds worth of one tone. What about when you played cleaner? How did they react doing swells? What about with no pedals on? For leads? You had a whole set there to pick from, why not choose some other sections to compare as well?

      Yeatzee Guitar valid point - we didn’t have much time to film with Luke since we were in between services, so with the time we had I wanted to focus in on the dirty tones which are usually more complex and harder to get to sound like “real” amps than clean tones.
      I used the kempers in a few playthrough videos, and more to come that should showcase more clean, swells, etc.
