Kemper VS Amps Part 1: • Kempers VS Real Amps a...

I've decided to put the kempers to the test against real amps at Bethel to see how they perform! In the kempers, I am running some profiles of my amps I created - a UK made Vox AC30 6/tb and a Fender Prosonic. In the "cabinet" slots of the kempers I am running impulse responses I made of my speakers in those amps - a UK celestion greenback and celestion / fender custom shop G10 Vintage that is in the prosonic. The IR's and Kemper Profiles are available for download on my website now!:

What seems to be going unnoticed is how absolutely killer that bass is
I felt God in that bass lick
In isolation I dig the amps vibe more for sure, but in the context of the mix or in a live setting the Kemper is totally workable! Thanks for the demo
I wouldn’t mind if you did more videos with Luke. :) Love listening to him explain things in audio world. Production Online rocks. 🤘🏻
dude your videos are so rad, thanks for doing these.
I could watch these kinds of videos all day!
Great video David - thanks for doing this in such detail. Luke asked me about my Kemper when we played just before you guys at BCDO a few years back. I’ve used mine for all live and recording stuff since 2016 - for me it’s a no brainer. I still love amps and use them on occasion but for travelling or home recording or quick setup time in church (we don’t own a venue), the Kemper is king for me. Another fun thing to try is splitting your drive pedals into an amp and then running the Kemper with stereo wet effects for a huge wet/dry/wet sound 🙌🏼
In the mix they both accomplish the same thing but in isolation the real amps have more low mids and smoother high end!
These are true things that you say. 👊🏼
I got your AC30 and prosonic Kemper profiles and IR's and oh my THEY RULE! I have never sounded this good lol. Our FOH tech loved them too. Said they sit in the mix perfectly! Thanks for making these available to us!
Thanks for the feedback - glad they are helpful!
Thank you for this video. I believe this is the first video that seriously compared amp vs Kemper in a live and full band mix.
For me, Kemper is the way. Reliable and transportable. Thanks once again for this video David. You are the man.
Great video! Both sound amazing! I think it comes down to practically, consistency and delivery and the Kemper does that really well. EQ can always be adjusted anyways and in a mix context there's no way to know which is which without side by side comparisons.
I'm excited that technology in the guitar world is growing and getting so close to the "real deal". I think amps will always be better and they're becoming the "desktops" in the studio and the Kempers the "laptops" of live/tours (if that makes sense..) I think we are in an AWESOME time for guitar playing!
Dude this is a great video. Thanks for putting it out.
Great vids man. Both definitely had a very similar character. I felt the combos had a larger/more open mid range which I preferred, but wouldn't describe as "better" quality. Obviously 100x more noticeable when solo'd. Also nice to see some Prosonic love out there. Such a sleeper of an amp!
Awesome video, David! Would love to see the same thing done with the Strymon Iridium.
Both sound amazing!!! Now I'm just waiting for you to get the Helix presets on your site. 😁
I TOTALLY understand the bias towards real amps. And when I switched to Helix I found that in a mix it sounded great but it didn't feel authentic in my ears while I was playing(only had it 2 weeks). But in this case I feel like the Kemper has to be the best option. When you consider all the profiles you can store and the lack of space that the Kempers take up and the fact that you can't really tell a quality difference when compared to real amps. I'm sold!!
Really like the sound for the track sounds right on
What I got out of this is that a Kemper is close enough.
Bro if you did a Vlog I would watch that Jank all the Time! Love your videos!
Both sound killer. I think everyone would agree that if the ideal amp in a room set up was an option with no draw backs we would prefer it. But those who have to lug amps to and from the kempers are well worth it! The subtle difference out weigh the drawbacks of using them. Plus, Bethel’s tone is literally heaven on earth haha so I bet anything you guys touch would sound killer!
1:46 - amps in the mix
1:58 - Kemper in the mix
2:25 - amps solo’d
2:37 - Kemper solo’d
2:53 - amps solo’d
3:00 - Kemper solo’d
5:34 - amps in the mix
5:45 - Kemper in the mix
Using an axe fx 3 for worship. Traditional amps would be great but you just can’t beat the convenience of these rigs. We are running this location out of a school so setup and tear down is a factor. Please please release those axe fx presets soon ;-) stoked you will have them for sale. Your tutorials have been a huge blessing this holiday season and the team loves that I play the tunes show they sound. Thanks David!
Glad they are helpful!
Thanks David. I agree using amps at home would be the go and Kempers on the road.
I didn’t pick up on the ‘inconsistent break-up’ on the amps but did notice what seemed to be a missing low mid frequency in the Kempers. I only noticed because you did an A-B comparison & wouldn’t be able to tell otherwise. The result is the Kempers have a little less punch & body which equates to less energy but a slightly cleaner product in the mix. It’s a bit like when you record something and then remove any background noise from that track.
The transients seem “faster” on the Kemper, while the amps seem more compressed on the attack. I like the feel of the compression that you get with a real amp and find it very inspiring, but like you said, Kempers are more reliable...and I’m sure FOH would prefer the fast attack of a Kemper. Seems to push out the melody more in a mix.
Very awesome sound
There is a noticeable difference between the two samples when isolated. In the context of a mix, they’re close enough for me.
Been playing the Helix and for about 7 months after ditching my tube amps, Strymon pedals, boutique overdrives, etc.
I’m happy enough. Especially considering I lead worship from acoustic more than I play EG.
Nathaniel, any suggestions on IRs for the Helix?
I wanna get myself a late Christmas present. 🎅😉
My lead guitarist and I run a Headrush and Helix respectively.
Full sized Helix with the mic preamp makes my life easier. I just need to get tweaking on some vocal effects.
Can you do this same kind of video with the helix? Like just for amps?
They both sound great, although nothing can beat the sound of a great player, some good pedals and a great tube amp and the touch sensitivity, the wormth, the natural power section overdrive of a tube amp..They are really close.Close enough that the benefits in reliability of something like the kemper is worth the difference in tone.So for the road,i'll just stick to the kemper
Great video! Thank you! Are you gonna put some Performances on your website?
dan whynot I plan on it at some point! Stay tuned.
If you have the money, the help to carry them around, and the chance to crank them, definitely get amps. If you can’t, get the kempers! Both sound great though!!
Honestly there was such little difference that a bit of tweaking in the upper mid range eq would have them sounding even closer. I think I’d go for the kempers because they cut in a full band mix better
Agree the kempers somehow sounded clearer....
I like the tonee of the amps!😊
i preferred amps however i travel with the watoto children's choir and i know if i got a kemper it would be magical ,i love your tone and how you choose guitar parts ,please run us through your board and do more covers
Agaba Denis tell me more about this watoto children’s choir.
I’ve only played a Kemper once and am considering one in the future. Something I think would be helpful is a video comparing the sound of one Kemper running stereo effects in the effects loop, recorded in stereo. Then compare it to running two different profiles on two Kempers running the stereo effects into the front of each. Basically to inform people (like me) whether or not two separate Kempers are worth it for a “better” stereo image.
Have you considered a Helix or Headrush? Or even the Yamaha THR100D dual, if you want to run pedals through it (though the interface and IRs may not be as good)
Blending different amps can really fatten up the tone you get! Much like really good chocolate, it may not be NECESSARY, but it sure is so damn GOOD.
@David hislop what do you prefer. Kemper or stomp or iridium
Never had a chance to play with a kemper, so I prefer amps. But kempers do sound good!
For those of us running in mono, which of your amp profiles would you use to best capture your main tone (with pedalboard)? Would you consider making a blended profile with the AC30 and prosonic?
Jeff Watson I love the sound of both amps but I’d say the AC30 pack is a good one to start with because It actually comes with profiles of both of my UK AC30’s so you are technically get two amps in that pack.
Some have asked about the blended profile thing - that this point no plans to do that but I might look into it and see if it sounds good.
Do a comparison on an AC30 with a blue back and a green back speaker
I think for touring purposes, Kempers would be the way to go as it's easy to transport and plugin. Amps sound great in the studio as long as the guitar player or engineer EQs it and set up a microphone properly.
what song are you playing in the comparison?
Is that all Kilt drive? Left track is rhythm I take it?
If its that close, does it really matter if you use a kemper or an amp?
I think a cool comparison video would be strymon bigsky vs. Hx effects reverb... 🤷♂️🎛️
I personally feel like the Kemper's transients are more defined and plasticky. They stand out more in the mix than the amps, which sound more round and lush to my ears. I'd pick the amps over the Kempers all day if I had the ways to do it and the roadies to set them up every gig. Since I'm not there yet, I'll stick to my Kempers.
I'm hearing the same. Kemper for the road/flights. Amps any day on home ground.
@@WorshipGuitarTheory Literally nothing that couldn't be compensated for with EQ. Let's put it on the radio and see how many people say "That record sucks, the guitars are too defined" lol
oceantracks So true! The variables are endless in shaping the final mix. I guess many of us never settle for “99% tone” and the quest for perfection goes on. If everyone on the team (not just guitars) pushed for the same, how much better would the overall sound be? I would like to hear that or at least a simulation of it.
@@WorshipGuitarTheory I'm just waiting for someone to hear a hit record on the air and say "Oh, man, no that's a Kemper those aren't real"....when that happens, I'll worry about it ;) It also depends on the piece of music. Is it a solo guitar part, in the intro to a song? Are they stacks of crunch guitars in a chorus? Etc...In this example as I mentioned, a bit of EQ and/or other processing (UAD AMPEX for example) would have rounded off the sharper attack of the Kemper easily...I actually liked the Kemper better, and I've grew up in the Sixties with all the usual suspect amps;)
@@TheAerovons Haha yeah that'll be the day! They are indeed awesome. Tech has come a long way from the old PODs. I could easily pick them out on the old Planetshakers records...yucks 🤮
I am in love with Bethel's snare sound and would literally kill to figure out what samples they are using
The samples come included with Luke's pro tools template! We don't use samples at FOH though.
David Hislop he’s after I wrote this I saw that it is $500 😵😵
That Sound - Beef O Brady
Our church has some power problems that means even awesome Supros or AC30s don’t stay consistent between weekends. We switched to Stomps and it’s been awesome to not only get both guitarists in stereo but to have that level of consistency. I’m sold on the digital stuff being just as good. Especially in a mix and for consistency.
Consistency and reliability are king! (Sound guy just needs to EQ you decently)
And portability and speed of set up (my band plays a lot of festival type set ups where you have an hour that includes set up and down) and reducing on stage noise make modelers work for us.
And like so many people have said, in a mix, there's so little difference. Even more so in a live situation.
What modelers do you guys use?
Oh open the EQ for us!!!!
How do you set your amps up? Are they super clean or do you have them set for “edge of breakup”?
Pretty clean when playing lightly, edge of breakup when digging in.
I use a helix now but plan to build a board around the iridium or an atomic ampli-fire box, has anyone here had any experience with either?
Only the iridium. I thought it sounded pretty good, plus you can load whatever IR’s you want into it.
What song are you playing
What song is being sampled here? Thanks!
“Alleluia” Jesus Culture.
It's crazy how far digital has come over the last several years. Obviously, nothing will ever replace the real deal but it's impressive nonetheless. Any experience with the Helix?
Helix content and patches coming soon!
Hey David are you running a master eq on your kemper? Or do you leave all the EQs at 0. If you are running EQs would you mind telling us the secret?
Hey, no master EQ! All at 0 here.
You cannot beat convenience of the Kemper, especially when it sounds “identical.”
Amps or Kempers - What did you prefer???
David Hislop I prefer amps in this video but the kemper is really amazing, well Done for church I need to buy this package of kemper
I also prefer the amps but the kemperzz be archi mega Jo ho ho close
I heard no difference when the Drums and Bass where along in the mix.
However by itself the Kempers sounded a bit muddy in the middle and lower middle frequencies. The analogue Amps were much clearer from what I was hearing.
Amps all day errrday. However, Kemper > unreliable amps!
I guess I’m the odd man out, I totally prefer the kempers, the difference is so minute and the convenience of the kemper is a total win for me.
1:47 vs 2:00
2:26 vs 2:38
2:54 vs 3:01
5:35 vs. 5:46
You are the best
I don’t hear the difference. Awesome
Thx for the comparison. Would you do a OX vs Kemper ? Do you have a preference between the 2 system for church or recording ? Thx
Great suggestion - I need to compare those next!
It will be awesome and if maybe you can share how your setup for the ox are :-) and maybe a video Amp + mic VS Amp + Ox... in worship context with the great Luke A ;-) thx a lot
Honestly if you bring the electric guitars in the mix down to where they should be.. I will take the Kemper 100%.
Maybe instead it’d be better to buy some pedals that emulate vintage preamps or if there’s a function in Kemper to do just that to mix them into the sound for a grittier feel?
I preferred the amps, they sounded more velvety 🙂
Honestly, I don’t hear enough of a difference between the two to justify the lack of reliability and replicative ability that real amps come with, traveling or not.
Side note: if that full mix was with only bass, drums and the 2 EG channels...holy crap...tell us about that bass tone!
Those dual tone hammers doing work! Check out @mat_ogden on Insta. He has a walkthrough of his pedalboard.
I feel like a lot of musicians, let alone average joe's/janes, wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I find the real amps have a nicer (to my ears) attack. That being said that kind of detail will get lost in 95% of mixes.
Amps!! The Kemper craze is out of control.
I tried a Kemper hooked up stereo to two FRFR speakers. It sounded like a damn toy. Maybe it sounds real hooked up to your computer, but that's not what I was looking for. I walked away with a handwired tube amp. People, don't buy this until you try it.
Amp definitely .. had more warmth and sound ed more responsive.
What is the name of the song?🤔😅
Benni H Allelulia by Jesus Culture
To my ear, the amps win. More organic, more alive. I no longer use my amps, but if I could, I'd take them with me to performances. That said, Kempers still get it done.
"Kempers have a consistency" Translation - They always sound the same. hahaha
Why do guitarists always end a great video by spoiling it with but I still prefer real amps, it's like they think G-d will strike them down if they don't choose tubes over digital. :) You could just say the difference is so minuscule that it makes no difference!
CrazyDiamond1968 just giving my honest opinions here :) it’s very close though!
The key words “always” and “prefer real amps” .. you answered your own question. Most guitarist prefer real amps. 😀
@@DavidHislop Not just close, almost identical.
Kinda lame you only compared 2 seconds worth of one tone. What about when you played cleaner? How did they react doing swells? What about with no pedals on? For leads? You had a whole set there to pick from, why not choose some other sections to compare as well?
Yeatzee Guitar valid point - we didn’t have much time to film with Luke since we were in between services, so with the time we had I wanted to focus in on the dirty tones which are usually more complex and harder to get to sound like “real” amps than clean tones.
I used the kempers in a few playthrough videos, and more to come that should showcase more clean, swells, etc.
In the mix, I can't tell the difference.
Amps : )
The amps have in my opinion much more lowend and low mids
