    • @jaem.1565
      @jaem.1565 Před 6 lety +15

      I really don't like the idea of fashion locs. I think the fact that the US Supreme Court found that it was not illegal for an employer to tell a Black women that she had to get rid of her 100% natural locs or be fired because they weren't considered an "immutable racial characteristic" even though she would have to shave her head to get rid of them shows that people getting locks they can remove adds to the perception that locs is a fashion hairstyle and not a way of life for some people, especially Rastafarians for which the hairstyle is a religious dedication and commitment.

    • @Cindy99765
      @Cindy99765 Před 6 lety +46

      But not everyone wants permanent locs and like the way it looks. Lots of hairstyles can be removed--even real locs can be combed out with lots of patience. That doesn't necessarily make it solely for a fashion statement. There are many people with real locs who are not wearing them for religious/Rastafarian reasons, rather that's how they like their hair.

    Can confirm about cosmetology school. I went to school in Milwaukee, and actually dropped out of the school when the instructor and I started butting heads when I'd keep asking "well how would this differ for curly and afro hair?" She finally flat out said that we wouldn't be learning about any type of curly or afro hair at that school. For being in the middle of Milwaukee, you'd think they'd at least understand that the local clientele is majority nonwhite. Thankfully I worked at Sally Beauty over on Good Hope and learned a lot from clients, as well as from the other girls in the group home I was in as a teen. For a career in hair to actively not teach about major types of hair, it's sad as hell. I don't have afro hair, but I do have a strong curl pattern, thanks to being Puerto Rican, and even then, nothing about even looser curl patterns was taught. That same instructor actually got into an argument with me because she said my hair wasn't curly (had been flatironed) and then had to eat her words when we got to the shampoo unit and she saw it dry curly. It's ridiculous is what it is.

    The transformation was not that dramatic, but you look beautiful with them. On the note of your stylist's mom, and how she viewed locs as the mark of rebels: I have crochet locs, and they have been in my head for almost 3 months. The longer I go with them, the frizzier and dread-like they get, and I love it. But my grandmother does not like them and says they bring me down. How I look like someone from Africa (We're black, our ancestry is FROM AFRICA, so I don't get that statement) And that I look unkept and 'wild.' She even made a statement saying that if they would have worn their hair like we do today, back in the 50's and 60's, they would have been told that they were gross, unhygienic, didn't take any time to make themselves presentable before leaving their house. And these statements hurt a little. Because I like them, a lot, and what if this was actually my hair? And is this how she sees others with braids and locs? As wild, unhygienic and ghetto? I would love to educate her, but she's in her 70's, and I doubt that she would hear me. It's funny what was considered a negative 50 years ago, is now celebrated and embraced.

    • @foulardetfeminisme129
      @foulardetfeminisme129 Před 6 lety +73

      That must hurt. For your grandma information, africans have the same prejudices against natural hair and locs too, black people worldwide have been brainwashed but its cool that it's changing ( too slowly but still).

    • @viciouzvalentine4993
      @viciouzvalentine4993 Před 6 lety +17

      I totally understand. Im from The South - Live in Texas and I live in a town with a large population of african americans. I was always obsessed with locs when I would see them on TV but my mom would never let me get them. Here the standard was straight hair, braids or a fade. After printing out pictures on the internet of nice looking dreadlocks and my mom seeing a woman with beautiful locs at Mcdonalds, she let me get them. I went to a majority black highschool and was one of 2 with locs- the other being a light skinned girl. I was made fun of and ostricized until my locs started looking really nice and mature. Thanfully today that stigma is gone and natural hair is everywhere. I do get a lot of questions and sometimes really weird questions from white people. I Think we will start to see black women opting for locs more as the movement progresses. I have combed out and restarted my locs many times. Ive had other long haired natural hairstyles but nothing beats the convenience and versatility of my locs.

      you shouldn't be offended by what your grand mothrr says because she grew up in a time when blacks were oppresed and felt the need to fit in. That was her way of life and it's hard for her to accept things that are diffrent from how she was raised and that is understandable. However, i do believe that it is our duty as melenials to stamp out all that was forced upon us and ensure our children understand that we are beautiful just the way we are.

      While you may not understand her reasoning, you should still respect your grandmother and her opinions. She is your family and your elder. Criticizing her on a public platform where thousands can see is very unkind to her. I'm sure she's done a lot of things for you, made sacrifices for you, and loves you very much. Talk to her about your differences, and respect that they are different. Don't blast her out on CZcams. That is unjustified. Also, don't be too quick to think that YOU need to educate her. She's been on earth far longer than you, and has gone through and experienced so much more. When you're older, you see things more than young people do.

If I ever decided to loc my hair for good, that's who I'm going to.

    This is beautiful and I can so relate. I am on a journey of loving my hair and the way it looks, and be able to focus on the rest of my life. I don't want to be so preoccupied in figuring out what hairstyle works for me to where it becomes all consuming. The relationship we have our hair is complex and I'm glad we are coming to some resolve with it. It matters.

    I liked how comfy they seemed with each other. Sometimes when I watch these videos the hair salonists and the person they’re working on seem kind of awkward and my social anxiety flares up. There was this warmth with the three of them and I was so relieved that I could just watch it and relax 😂
    Edit: just finished the vid and she looks FANTASTIC

    Sojourner did a GREAT JOB pretending it wasn’t cold out for her shots! 😂 everyone was walking by with winter coats on, meanwhile she’s sleeveless 😂.
    They worked FAST!!! I liked her locs and the jewelry. Shoutout to all the #HBCUs ✊🏽 #ilovemyHBCU #FiskForever

    I would absolutely love to get locs! This is the year I’ve finally learned to be comfortable in my own skin and love and own my blackness. I’ve been trying different braided styles and love it, unfortunately my mom is very against using fake hair so I can’t get any box braids, she’s even more against locs as she thinks they look messy and “gangster” and it’s a big frowned upon in my country to use fake hair and just the stigma in general. But I hope when I get older and move out on my own I can try new things and embrace
