    I loved Gina in "Woman of Straw," with Sean Connery, released around the very time (of this WML, June 1964 airing). Well bless her pretty heart - Our Gina turned 95 on July 4th, 2022. May all of us be so lucky as to see age 95. Cheers to all! (P.S.) As a post-script to my comment of five months ago, I just wanted to send some prayers and good wishes to Miss Gina who passed on just two days ago - January 16, 2023, at age 95. My goodness, what a great career and life she had. RIP dear lady.

      I love it when Steve Allen is on. His first wife, Dorothy Goodman, was my father’s first cousin. I never knew them, and I don’t know how they ever met or why they divorced. But his second wife was a jewel. She was sometimes on the show either as a panel member or a mystery guest. They made a fine and long-lasting couple.

    The Heart of Midlothian Football Club that Danny Ferguson played for during most of his senior career is more commonly known as "Hearts". They are the oldest football club in Edinburgh. They were formed by a group of friends from a dancing club that was named for a Walter Scott novel.
    I played some competitive soccer when I was in high school and became a bit of a Hearts fan for a time. In June 1974 as part of a trip with a team from my university, I stayed with a nice family in Edinburgh who were Hearts fans. This happened to be while the World Cup was being played in West Germany and the Scottish team had the misfortune of being in the wrong draw and were eliminated in the Group stage despite not only not losing any games but also not surrendering any goals. I learned a lot more about the sport as it is played on the world stage at that time and have become a huge fan of the sport, especially during the World Cup, ever since.

    Bennett got the functional equivalent of a free question when he started questioning Gina Lollobrigida. When he said that the audience gave the guest the kind of reception that is accorded a sports figure, the audience laughed. He then said, "Obviously it's not a sports figure." John was going to give Bennett a "no", but Bennett objected, saying "What? I didn't ask any question. I made an observation, John." John said "I have been had" and returned the score to none wrong. John had indeed been had.

    • @philippapay4352
      @philippapay4352 Před 4 lety +3

      @@Etnalleb Claudia and Gina were more traditional beauties with quite even features. Claudia has maintained a fairly active acting career doing respected work, but mostly in Europe. She had a long-term marriage that ended only with her husband's death a few years ago. She lives in Paris. She has always been active in charitable causes for health and human rights. Gina continued some film work, but moved to Canada with a husband, and in recent years has lived in Rome and Monaco. She began a photojournalistic career 40 years ago so did less and less acting, but continued having many affairs. She sold all her jewels a few years ago and gave the millions in proceeds to stem cell research. Sophia was the more exotic looking beauty and she had a stunning acting range that fellow performance/film/theater artists the world over marvel at and respect. She has not worked much in the past couple of decades and lived quite a long time in an area outside of Los Angeles while maintaining her home in Italy. Her orchestra conductor son performs all over the world, so she can see him there when he's in Europe. Her film producer, director son lives in the Los Angeles area still and is married to the actress who played Kate in the early years of "NCIS." She had the more unusual looks and powerful roles.

    Gina Lollobrigida would turn 37 on 4 July 1964, just 20 days after this WML? episode aired. At the time, she was still married to Dr. Milko Skofic. (Sadly, the marriage would end in divorce in June of 1971, after almost 22 1/2 years of matrimony.)
    Since a previous commenter noted that Gina Lollobrigida had appeared in a number of English-language films before "Strange Bedfellows," beginning with John Huston's disastrous "Beat the Devil" in 1953 (she played Maria Dannreuther), I will note that the other English-language films in which she was a cast principal between that film and "Strange Bedfellows" are as follows:
    TRAPEZE (1956) - as Lola
    SOLOMON AND SHEBA (1959) - as Sheba
    NEVER SO FEW (1959) - as Carla Vesari
    GO NAKED IN THE WORLD (1961) - as Giulietta Cameron
    COME SEPTEMBER (1961) - as Lisa Helena Fellini
    Following "Strange Bedfellows," she made three more English-language big-screen movies:
    THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O'FARRELL (1968) - as Maria
    BUONA SERA, MRS. CAMPBELL (1968) - as Carla Campbell
    KING, QUEEN, KNAVE (1972) - as Martha Dreyer
    She also appeared on U.S. television in the mid-1980s: in five episodes of "Falcon Crest" in 1984 (as Francesca Gioberti), in a TV movie titled "Deceptions" in 1985 (as Princess Alessandra), and on a two-part episode of "The Love Boat" titled "The Christmas Cruise" in 1986 (as Carla Lucci).

    "Strange Bedfellows" would open in the United States early the following year, on Wednesday, 10 February 1965. In addition to Gina Lollobrigida, the cast principals include Rock Hudson, Gig Young (who appeared on WML? as a guest panelist once each in 1958, 1959, and 1961), Edward Judd, Howard St. John, Dave King, Peggy Rea, and Joseph Sirola, with interesting camo roles played by Nancy Kulp, Bernard Fox, and Terry-Thomas (speaking of a connection to recent WML? episodes).
    The movie was directed by Melvin Frank, with a screenplay by Mr. Frank and Michael Pertwee (from a story by Mr. Frank and Norman Panama). The music for the film was written by Leigh Harline; the cinematorapher was Leo Tover; and Gina Lollobrigida's gowns were designed by Jean Louis.
    ("Strange Bedfellows" would turn out to be the next-to-last film that Melvin Frank and Norman Panama would collaborate on the story and/or the screenplay; the last would be "Not With My Wife, You Don't!" in 1966.
    (Also, in 1968, Gina Lollobrigida would once again star in a movie directed and co-written by Melvin Frank: "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell." By the time that film was released, in December of 1968, "What's My Line?" would be in its first season of the syndicated version. And no, Gina Lollobrigida did not appear as a Mystery Guest on syndicated WML? during that first season.)

    Cerf was "splitting" his questions into two with the Scottish guest. "are you involved in show or tourist.." when those 2 can be interpreted as separate questions and John was right, it's too broad. Then he follows up with "is your uniform used for show or athletic purposes?" when that also can be separate. Nothing serious. And gotta love it when the guys in the audience reacted when Gina walked in. You KNOW it's a beautiful woman as a starting point haha

    Interesting what Steve Allen says at around 22:15. He says it in jest but I was just thinking before it how Steve used to have extended scope to concoct progressive questioning that got him nowhere and it was really funny. In fact they were some of my favourite segments. Somehow he never got the opportunity to get going in this
    I think the show has indeed changed!! :)

    • @ReWriteMan62
      @ReWriteMan62 Před 2 lety +3

      Newspapers were the primary form of information. Mystery guests came from the news-making world. Dorothy wrote a column on the entertainment industry. Arlene was a theatre, film and television actor. Steve was also and Bennett co-owned Random House. This was their world. Not only was the Broadway stage popular, but movie stars made personal appearances to publicize their new films, which opened in cinemas located right alongside the ‘legitimate’ ones. ( Sadly most of those movie palaces are no more. )
      As I understand from watching previous episodes, the panelists would speak aloud in frustration trying to recall from reading the newspapers who was in town and making headlines.
      Dorothy was an intelligent, focused and very competitive panelist. She tells us matter-of-factly how easy it was (for her): the mystery guest was a 1)non-blonde 2) foreign 3)actress visiting NYC. Bennett had seen Miss Lollobrigida’s picture in the early edition of Monday’s paper.

    • @laurahoward5426

      This is part of the joke back the day of why it took women so long to get out of the house. You had to put the hair in curlers and then you had to use a comb and what was called tease the hair. You then combed it up and down to break the hair follicles. Then you had to hair spray it gently into place keeping the volume and the height and not squishing it down. Mass quantities of hairspray were used at this time, used to come in cans that were about a foot tall.
