  • Looking at an original M1841 Mississippi Rifle made in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. I explain why it’s called the “Mississippi Rifle,” and why it’s awesome. Did you know that Congress ordered the US Military to sell these state of the art rifles to civilians headed West?

Since West Virginia didn't come into existence until 1863, these rifles were made in Harper's Ferry Virginia.

I’m a member of the Mississippi army national guard. I’m in a combat engineer unit, part of the 155th Brigade Combat Team. Our infantry battalion, 1/155 is the famous Mississippi Rifles, still going strong today 👍

I usually catch your legal related videos but alway catch a peak at the rifles standing behind you. Great video. Looks like you have a great collection. Thanks for sharing.

I shoot a .58 Pedersoli reproduction for N-SSA competition, relined by the somewhat famous Robert Hoyt in Fairfield, PA. It's one of those long guns that just feels "right" when you bring it to the shoulder. I grew up in Beckley and frequented your area growing up ... fishing, caves, hunting. You live in a beautiful part of the world.

Man, you’re awesome. I know so little about the Mexican American war it’s embarrassing in comparison to my knowledge of WW2.

I have just came into possession of a Harpers Ferry Mississippi Rifle with an 1853 date. The bore measures .59-.60 on my Calipers. I can barely tell that there is rifling in the barrel. Is there a way for sure to tell if it’s a .58 rifle or a “smooth” bore shotgun. I’m new to this era of firearms and black powder. This was handed down to me by my grandmother and I don’t know much about it. Thanks for the video

Mine is bored out to be a smoothbore as well. I’m guessing once it hit the civilian market.

Nice. I would like to acquire Colt AR-15 rifles, wonder if that act covers us new settlers?

The Mississippi rifles from harpers ferry were not used in the Mexican American war.
Most of the harpers ferry Mississippi rifles were sold to citizens after years in storage.
