  • We love our large bulb storage onions! In this video I show how we harvest, cure, and store our onions so they provide months of excellent flavor! This proves will work for any of the bulb storage onion varieties.

    Thanks so much for the information! It's exactly what I needed to learn. I appreciate how you explain not only what you're doing but why you're doing it.

      Overland Pacific Northwest thank you! Just branching out and trying to produce some different content. Plus, we are so busy with the garden in the summer that I don’t have much time for anything else... 😆

    Good information but what did you do about the onion with the flowering stem?

    • @TNOutdoorsFanatic
      @TNOutdoorsFanatic  Před 3 lety +2

      We used those immediately since they won’t store. So, we just chopped it up like a regular onion and used it with the first couple of weeks.

    Do i have to do that process if I'm just growing a few in my yard to try it out???

    • @TNOutdoorsFanatic
      @TNOutdoorsFanatic  Před 2 měsíci

      Great question! You only have to do this if you intend to store them for months. If you think that they will be eaten in the next couple weeks, then you can just store in your refrigerator.

    If we cut the green tops off as we pulled from garden, will our candy onions still dry to store

    • @TNOutdoorsFanatic
      @TNOutdoorsFanatic  Před 3 lety +3

      Hello, great question! I am not going to say they will not dry, but I can tell you that my experience has not been very favorable with onions with the tops broken off. It seems like they do not cure properly and as a result they tend to rot a lot faster! I think it also depends on how your cure them. In this video I cured them in my shed with a fan blowing over them, but we had an extremely hot and dry summer compared to typical. This year we have had regular rain showers and the humidity has been very high, so I am curing them indoors this year. Still using a fan to get that airflow over them to speed up the process and improve drying efficiency. My suggestion is to give it a try, but keep any without the tops off to the side so you can keep watch over them and use them at the first sign of them starting to turn soft or discolor.

      I've done it both ways, I suspect TN is correct, I just can't handle seeing all those greens wasted. They are almost as valuable to me as the onion itself!

    Here in the north east where we have high humidity 80 to 90% I'm wondering if I can store my 32 candy onions in my basement where I have a dehumidifier running 24/7 and as a result the humidity is about 35% or will the dehumidifier suck too much moisture out of the onions?

    • @TNOutdoorsFanatic
      @TNOutdoorsFanatic  Před 2 lety +1

      Personally, I think that would be fine. My crawl space is encapsulated and air conditioned, so the humidity is usually around 40-45%. Just remember that candy onions don’t keep very long because of their high sugar content, so we usually try to use ours in the first 3 months before they rot. Other varieties we grow last 6-9 months without any issues.

      @@TNOutdoorsFanatic ok thanks, that was my problem last year. I stored the candy onions on racks and used them as needed but by Christmas the remaining few rotted.

    thanks for the informative video. do i have to wash the onions off when i harvest? considering i use manure in my soil and such…

    • @TNOutdoorsFanatic
      @TNOutdoorsFanatic  Před 2 lety +1

      I mix manure in mine as well, and there is no need to wash them. You want to harvest them when the weather is as dry as possible and you don't want to expose them to water if at all possible since it will increase the risk of rotting due to not being fully dried. The manure won't hurt them or reduce their storage time. You will just clean them off and peel the outer layer when you prepare it for eating.
