I found a set of Hall effect (hall sensor) joysticks that work on the ROG ALLY (with a catch currently). I will show you the full install process, test them out, and show you some calibration options. don't want sensors to wear out causing drift, this could be a good option. I will continue to work on ironing out the experience, and will be testing some more solutions next week.

I just did this following your tutorial, very straight forward and easy to do. Because of the interference I opted to only replace the right thumbstick with a hall effect since it will be the one responsible for aiming an precision when it comes to first person shooters. So far no issues
I’m glad to hear it. Sometimes the right side has given some folks issues as well. It seems fairly inconsistent
now we just need a company to make shielded hall effect joystick assemblies.
Yeah that would be cool, I’m not counting on it happening, but would be nice. I’ll continue to see if I can make a more elegant solution haha. This one is so close to stopping it, perhaps a different strength magnet may help

@@ignignxkt no, I personally tried that way but the deadzone at 20% kills your gameplay. in most games like efootball or warzone or even diablo 4.
@@okestgamerthe trick to shielding magnetic fields is to give them something conductive to run along. Aluminum isn’t great at that.
Nickel and iron are. MuMetal foil is expensive but it’s designed for this. I’m going to try it and I’ll let you know how it works out.

I'm impressed. I don't think I'll be doing the mod, as if and when I do get stick drift, they are very easy and affordable to replace the original ones. But, this is pretty awesome. You almost have it. It would be nice if the triggers were not hall effect.

I purchased 1 pair of standard and 1 pair of tigher from this seller. And all of them drift. I test them on right side so no interference. And I dont think i did anything worng .now contacting the seller. Will See what happens next.
It’s the interference issue and not so much drift issues with the module. Some people have had issues with the right side as well.
I'd wait for non hall effect triggers alternatives, to replace those and just add hall effect joysticks without additional tinkering or sacrifices.
Your video was insanely interesting however, knowing you can fully negate the interference is pretty cool.

Glad you’ve enjoyed it. It’s not a perfect solutions, and we’ve started to see a few have interference on the right side from the vibration motor. So if you’re having issues or experimenting, join the discord and we can troubleshoot it as a group.

I just full sent it without the tape on left and it seems to be working fine, doing a calibration test atm and going to run with it for a few days and just not care if it does pick up interference once in a while lol. Mainly pc game, my ally is just for when I’m at work or not able to bring my pc with lmao

I actually just increased the deadzone instead of the shielding no issues and gameplay is still great

Asus did an awesome job with the ally, it’s very easy to work on your own device, lots of modular parts hold by screws, not glued or soldered together, superb job by Asus in my opinion, more console, laptop ans hardware manufacturers in general should take notes

Great video! I think I might just replace the right joystick since it's the more sensitive one for FPS TPS games (look sensitivity, deadzone 0)
That one is pretty safe to do. No extra shielding required. The left one is still a work in progress.
This is the approach I’ve taken, I ordered a couple of Hall effect mounts when your first video came out and they arrived today. I’ve just replaced the right one for now, but I am happy to have the option in the future. Thanks for this research and tutorial!
Weirdly I found the threading of that small ribbon cable back through when reinstalling the daughter board by far the hardest thing.
Had my right joystick stop working on my Ally, and after a few hours of testing and research, turned out to be a hardware issue. Didn't want to wait for RMA, so hopefully I can upgrade the sticks with this guide. If the right side has issues as well, I may resort to shielding and only upgrading the right stick, while just having an extra hall-effect sensor.
Eventually want to swap the sticks out with heavy, metal ones. Play a lot of racing games, and (opposite to FPS games) the extra sensitivity of heavy sticks on the light strength sensors should hopefully work out great.
In reality I strongly suggest going with the alps joysticks. It's hard to get this to work perfectly and does not work on all Ally devices i have now found

Well good thing you made this video because now i don't feel the need to do this. That's a lot of work for the tape part. You didn't show the game pad site after your tape and magnet part though. The whole elite controller part lost me too. Cool that you did that though, in assuming other videos won't even mention that
I must have missed showing results again. I would suggest not doing this mod unless you want to tinker a lot. On my third ally (2 died from sd card slot) it simply does not work to get rid of the interference.
@okestgamer Just got my sticks in. Right side is fine. Left side positioned the magnet, such as your video stated stick pulls down only in testing on website and only works left to right no up and down. Guess its back to the drawing board for me lol
Yeah that sounds like a defective stick. I would reach out to see if they can send a replacement.

Maybe I got lucky on mine. I installed the hall effect sticks with extra tension and after restoring calibration to factory defaults they work FLAWLESSLY. Zero dead zone on both sticks. No drifting. No left trigger interference. It's actually worse after calibration lol somehow it's absolutely perfect with the factory defaults.
Yeah honestly it seems hit or miss with these. Glad yours worked out. The tighter ones would be great in the device
Thank you for this tutorial, I’ve actually found something interesting when it came to calibrating the left thumb stick. Should you hold the left trigger as you go through the calibration test it negates the left stick input and is not affected at all when pressing the trigger.

It really did work, though it is a little quirky but I’m able to play Fortnite and call of duty without any interference. The quirky part is that there is interference detected when you press the left trigger on armory crate but on the games I tested, I have complete and free motion with no problem.

Great video and explanation. The question i'm curious about is how much stick drift we will see with the default pair and the decision to just replace those. It seems that replacement process of getting the same part is fairly straight forward. so everyone's mileage will vary
Yeah the process for replacing the joysticks to a fresh pair of the alps ones is very easy. The Hall effect one really is for those who like modding and trying to figure things out.

Is the tension on the hall effect sticks and different to stock? I find the stock ones to be way to loose compared to a normal console controller
They feel exactly the same. I am hoping to take one apart and experiment with some increased tension. Waiting on a pull force measurement tool so I can actually apply a metric to any changes I make. Otherwise it’s down to “how it feels” for my results. Hopefully it arrives soon
I am having a completely different issue. My Hall effect set came with shielding tape so no issue on the left stick. But oddly my right stick is drifting upwards. I tried changing the sticks thinking one of them might be defective but still the same. I have to set the deadzone very high to mitigate the issue.
Some others have had the issue. It's not a defective stick, there has sometimes been interference on the right side as well. Unfortunately not all Ally devices respond the same so it only came to be known after the video

You can give it a try, it seems some people have issues with the right stick, my new ally seems to experience similar issues but on the left side where the interference isn't beatable.

It does, you need to slightly adjust the trigger to balance it out.
I went on the hall effect joystick website and I see they include a shielding paper to use between the module and the board.

It helps yes, but what I’ve since discovered for the Hall effect sticks is that each rog ally seems to respond differently. My third ally (sd slot issues) seems to not take to them at all, I’m not sure if there is a fix at this point that would work for all Ally devices.
mite be easier just to use the deazone setting its not like the left stick needs to be extremely precise to walk around. Its the right stick that matters. in fact mite be better to simply swap the right stick withh halll effects and leave the left
Yeah for most that would be the best option. I’m doing it mostly for the sake of experimenting.
So what if the 00 screws won't budge? I can't even get them to turn with an electric screwdriver.
It could possibly be your screw driver. I’ve had some screw drivers that just don’t seem to fit right even with correct size selected
I did a circularity test on my stock sticks and my joystick is drawing square rather than a circle. Do you know how to fix that or is it normal the stock ones do that?
It did that in the very early days after launch but was fixed shortly after. You may need to do a calibration

It’s hard to say, some ally devices do well without, some with the tape do well, and some just refuse to work right.
Do you know if the joystick caps, the part your thumb actually interacts with, is a proprietary shape or anything? Like is it the same as Xbox joysticks? I'd like to swap out for aluminum ones if I could. They don't wear out the way plastic ones do
I’ve tested the Xbox sticks and they do not fit unfortunately. Maybe with some modding (drill the hole deeper in the dust cap/stick.

I think they are also too big. Didn’t test switch pro, but ps4 and Xbox do not fit.

It’s more so they know which sticks to send. Tell them you need the Hall effect ones for the onexplayer 2 from Indiegogo. One thing to note, some folks have had their right stick have interference as well, others had zero interference at all on either stick. Seems to vary for each device.

Are these sticks more resistive than the stock. Like you think these are better for fps games?
They have the same stick resistance as the stock ones.
Might give this a go with the Thrustmaster eswap sticks. It's a brilliant controller but oh my, god, having to contact support for new thumbsticks every two months gets tiring.
What are the thrustmaster sticks? The ally takes a specific stick so it has to be the correct one

It should work with another magnet. This isn’t an exact science with the ally, some experience more interference than others. Some like mine work on the right stick perfectly, while others do not. It takes a lot of tinkering.

They ask for a SN for determining which stick to send, just let them know it’s the onexplayer 2 stick and you need the Hall effect one.
hey there, I followed everything, and tried resetting my ally but no matter what I try the rog specific buttons have stopped working ever since i added my hal sticks, any idea as to what couldve happened please help
If I had to guess I would say one of the ribbon cables isn’t connected right.
@@okestgamer after troubleshooting I found that adding the protective tape over the pcb on the left stick was shorting a connection and when it was removed (kept it on the Hal stick) the function buttons came back to life
Did you put the kapton tape down first? It should block the conductivity

not sure, the joysticks would have been a nicer option.
Why not use copper tape and solder it to a ground point? Thats how you properly EMI shield in other applications.
That is another option to test, I had not gotten that far along in my testing

Yup this is why, to get it working requires a lot of tweaking to get working for some devices.

It is to help counter the magnetic interference from the trigger. A word of warning, some users have reported interference on the right stick as well. It seems some have issues on the right side as well, while others do not.

I’m going to try a MuMetal shield to conduct the field lines. That said I’ll likely go with a much larger shield to help make sure they’re fully conducted. I’ll comment and let you know how it works - I won’t get the Hall effect sticks for like a month apparently.

@@okestgamer I know the feeling. I’ll take some pictures and will share my results. I don’t have a gauss tester but I have some of the magnetic field sheets so I might even be able to see the differences in the fields and where they exist.
Optimistic for the MuMetal. I have enough I can try a few things from a larger shield to wrapping the stick.
I tried ordering some of the sheets, but sadly they never arrived.

My other question is will the new joysticks have a little more resistance? I don’t know what it is about the stock joysticks but they almost feel like they are too easy to move compared to my Xbox controller, does that make sense? Haha 😅
Hall effect are magnetic based, so they don’t get the “drift” issues like on ps4/Xbox and especially joycons. As far as the feel of the sticks, they are the same

Rog ally right joystick won’t turn left or right but does everything else

It sounds like a defective stick, if it’s like that from the factory I would suggest seeing if you can exchange it

I think there should be a 1 year warranty. Maybe it depends on the country
