  • Disney’s newest villain song “This Is The Thanks I Get” from “Wish” was a little... meh! But the bones are salvable! To prove it Grant, one of our talented songwriters here at Pixel Playhouse, remade it in the style of CLASSIC Disney Villains, like Frollo, Ursula, Dr. Facilier, and of course… Scar!
    They were TRULY evil!
Video by songwriter Grant Steller, go Grant! ‪@GrantSteller‬

Hey, Steller here! It made my day reading through all your kind words. I am so happy to be working with Pixel Playhouse and you will be seeing me again!
This full song will be available on me (Grant Steller) and Caleb Hyles spotify soon, it would mean the world if I could earn your support.
I just wanted to clear up that arranging the song in the four distinct (and perhaps jarringly) different villians styles was intentional! I was aiming to explore how 4 of disneys best villains would behave in Magnifico's situation, and that meant changing everything! No shortcuts.
Which villains rendition did you like the most?

    • @angelap1778

Dr. Facilier's! I may be biased because he sings my absolutely favorite disney villain song, but I thought the melody's fun bounciness reflected the attempt of a utopian society, while the minor key (I think -- I don't have a ton of technical knowledge of music) and caleb's bitter performance felt like a character descending into rageful madness. Literally got chills as I heard it 👏👏

I think for the "villain with good publicity" Facillier's rendition works best and is probably most original (the other ones are deeply immersed in the musical structure of source material), but personally I think Scar works better to me in context of Magnifico making decision in the privacy of his castle. He still has the mask of benevolence, but it's visibly (and audibly) slipping. If I were to offer commentary for full version, the Scar's fragment presented here would make most sense as second verse, while the first would be slightly calmer, start at proclaiming the greatness of himself and his kingdom, pivoting to "ungratefulness", with chorus having a faux-playful quality. Then second verse laments the "disobedience" and morphs into determined call to action, while chorus is genuinly furious. Then finish with escalating bridge and unhinged final chorus.

Disney seems to be testing out how terrible they can treat the people that work for them. But maybe if they do terrible enough they can get sued out of getting in their own employees’ way, lol.

There are hero antagonists and villain protagonists, all that matters is whether a character represents one of the main perspectives a story is told from, or if they oppose those that do. Elsa is an antagonist because the story focuses on Anna and it's Elsa's winter and insecurities that are causing most of the issues, and she's refusing to come home or stop the winter. You could take Hans out entirely and the story would still largely work because it's not really about him, he was just thrown in as a villain so that Disney could portray her as a good character.

The changes in style could come from each wish that Magnifico studies, though I'd suggest making the transitions flow better.

I can imagine the visuals for this already. Him using his powers to emulate the vibe of the scenery of these other villains' songs while he uses their style. Maybe a few dolls and skulls for Dr. Facilier, Bubbles/making a potion for Ursula, Green flames and steam for Scar, and those flames turn into red hell fire for Frollo. He can pull down wishes with references to individual lines, like an Aladdin wish for that genuflect line.

    • @princeofcats331

I've got a few ideas. (slight movie spoilers ahead, obviously. So be careful.)
*Magnifico turning a human mannequin into a frog, to reference Dr Facilier's curse that he uses in the ending section of 'Friends On The Other Side.'*
*Magnifico uses his magic to call on a group of eels to play the brass section for Ursala's part, referencing Flotsam and Jetsam from The Little Mermaid*
*Magnifico (as Scar) stands over a wish of Mufasa becoming the king of the Pridelands, and then he forcefully throws it off the tower to reference the emotional 'Long Live the King' scene from The Lion King. Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed would make an appearance in the background orchestra, probably on the marimba, drums, and xylophone. There would also be green flames and steam used as visual effects to reference Scar's villain song 'Be Prepared.'*
*And lastly, Magnifico as Frollo with the tower's windows in a shade of red to reference the song 'Hellfire'.*
*For the Aladdin reference, he'd pull down a wish of a young boy and girl who look similar to Aladdin and Jasmine sitting on a magic carpet, referencing the song 'A Whole New World'.*

So there's a toxic cycle that often occurs the workplace that I think would've been PERFECT villain motivation:
    1. Underlings look to leader for affirmation
    2. Leader interprets this as a need for guidance
    3. Leader begins more closely managing everything
    4. Underlings begin resenting the leader for micromanaging everything
    5. Leader begins resenting underlings for needing constant supervision
If I was writing Wish, I would've used this cycle as the central conflict for the film, being the motivation for BOTH the hero and villain.

I'm genuinely flabbergasted how you were able to keep anything from the original and have it sound this spectacular and villainous. Caleb fuckin' killed it too, I especially liked the mermaid/hunchback inspired parts. You guys did a great job.
A movie that pays tribute to Disney's tapestry of movie history has such potential in concept, my main concern when hearing all the "Wish is supposed to be a tribute" marketing was that it would feel too derivative. Instead it managed to disappoint in countless other surprising ways. It's nice to see some people picking up on all that lost potential musically.
It's the same as with the visuals, they have so much history to draw from. Anything from the whimsical storybook style of Snow White or Pinnochio, or Eyvind Earle-style graphic landscapes of the 50s, all the way through to the well-rendered but fantastical sets of their renaissance movies and beyond. And what we got clearly showed some effort, especially the pre-vis art, but for the most part just ended up looking like the same thing we've been seeing since Tangled but flatter. But as a visual artist, I'd still say it was more disappointing musically than visually, even if it was kind of mediocre across the board.

I say this as someone who enjoyed the original song fine as an energetic pop tune: This is an impressive update in a lot of areas, particularly when it comes to lyrics and instrumentation. I would say it still lacks a real character or narrative point to focus on, which is very important of any musical number, in my opinion. But if your goal was to craft a song about a petulant and insecure man getting irritated by others around him, I'd say "Well done".
