She manages to convey such depths of sadness behind the facade of happy, happy, I'm really very happy, believe me!

Ahhhh, it’s so nice to see this interview with Leslie. She’s wonderful.
Another Year is probably my favorite movie. I find Mary’s character fascinating. I see what’s happening with her and why. I don’t see her as malicious - I’ve known women like her. The “men’s women” who bristle at perceived competition. All the actors in this movie are outstanding.
Mike Leigh truly understands women on an almost cellular level.

I disagree a bit with Leslie's opinion that Mary is basically a non-malicious, 'good' person as I found her treatment of Joe's girlfriend Katie disgracefully rude and hostile, also the way in which she tends to focus too much on and flirt with Tom, whilst practically ignoring Gerri on occasions is pretty appalling.
Mary was only 'once divorced' (not twice) and had an affair with a married man.
Leigh's process of character development and improvisation without a script as preparation for the final result is fascinating.
My favourite is still 'Nuts in May', closely followed by 'Secrets and Lies' and 'Vera Drake'. I remember seeing 'Abigail's Party' at an unfortunately ill-timed period in my life having just lost my father who literally dropped dead following a massive heart attack aged 51 and have never felt able to watch it since.
