she wasn't his girlfriend when he wrote it, he wrote the song about feeling used being her "vehicle", he felt she was using his for rides back in high school! After the song was a hit they dated on and off and didn't marry until 1996
It should be noted that Jim Peterik, the guy who composed and sang Vehicle, was also a composer and founding member of the 80s rock band Survivor, and also wrote songs for the Southern rock band 38 Special.
Exactly, like this totally outstanding first class ACE song here "Vehicle"(and others). YES!! 60's &70's music had celebration and so much positive energy to it, is right!! So much feel good, love, and perfect harmony bursting at the seams!! BUT much of now of days modern music is sickening being poison for the soul with mostly destructive and totally disturbing negative energy to it, IS truth!! I cannot think of any absolutely more terribly worse crap music than Eminem, Drake, Kayne West, Arcade Fire, etc.
BeerHits LOL Totally agree my friend. Somewhere in the early 90's (around 91-92) music became very dark. I mean there were always dark elements to music, but that dark element did not set the tone as it does today. It was simply a small by product of the music world. Two albums I say total changed us to "the dark side" lol was 1) NWA Straight Outta Compton and 2.) Nirvana Nevermind. Two of the greatest albums in history, but they were also the huge catalyst that started us down the road, mainstream road, of making us believing the darker side of our beings need to be expressed more so than the positive/celebration side.
mrhoffame - Thank you, but NW*, Straig** Out** Compt** is absolutely total vulgar garbage shit repetitive CRap disturbing noise, not worthy to be called music.

It really is a fascinating song. The horns and the vocal, obviously. But dig that bass. And that guitar solo kicks ass too. Best of all, it's recorded really well and you can focus on the different elements. Singer Jim Peterik was only 19 when they recorded this!
When I was in high school, some friends of mine played this at a talent show at my school; it was also an audition show to select a band for the Prom. They won the gig!
@Westernsharpie's RC Your comment is 2 years old and you may never see this...but it is perhaps the wryest and funniest single sentence comment I have ever read on, not just youtube, but any social media site. I owned an 83 Accord that I purchased in 87 and wrecked 3 months later...not my fault, some fucking 80 year old woman driving with a broken left arm in a plaster cast AND SLING cut right in to my lane. I was in the process of passing on her driver's side at around 60 mph, so I was probably in her blind spot briefly when she decided to change lanes but WTF!!! I was so upset and I actually broke my own hand pounding it on the pavement in frustration. If the driver wasn't a poor old woman and a man I may have broken it on his face if he had emerged from the car with the faintest of attitude, that's how initially pissed (and young and foolish) I was!!! Her huge 2 ton gunboat of an Olds 88 was suddenly mostly in front of me as I tried to maneuver without going off the road, did some nifty driving/braking if I do say so myself. My car hitting hers was like a love tap for her car, but devastating to mine, but nevertheless my nudge and her apparent panic exacerbated and handicapped by an injury that should have precluded her from even operating a motor vehicle caused her to lose control of her own car and she careened in to a telephone pole up ahead of me. 60,000 miles on my car, insurance totaled it out. If I knew then the car probably could have lasted 30 more years repaired I may have challenged that settlement!!! After pounding my fist, I recovered my senses and ran to her smoking car to check if whoever it was had been injured. When I pried her door open with my good hand and saw her age and the cast I was just gobsmacked. I couldn't be angry at her, she was so sweet and shocked, requiring my comfort and assurances (and uninjured thank god and no doubt owing to driving one of the few cars on the road at that time that would allow someone to walk away from a wreck like that unscathed!!! The telephone pole and driver were practically in different zip codesl) but DAMN WHO THE FUCK IS LETTING YOU DRIVE AND WHERE CAN I FIND THEM? Anyway, it was a fantastic ride, manual transmission, and reliable in every way for the admittedly short time I had it..still saying something as I was rough on cars back then!!! Most all 80s Accords were highly reliable and pretty much to present day...I mean, it was the fucking best selling or near the top car for decades for a reason!!!...so yeah, your comment is probably not accurate for the car's heyday, but that doesnt matter at all. IT IS 34 years old, in itself a testament to the build quality of that car LOL. Anyway, your remark took me by surprise, witty as hell (contrasting with the optimism and passionate energy of the tune, the band's promise, chart success never to be revisited after this one superb hit, and the sad imagery of a once great, albeit unexciting model of car...idk, just something about the comment) and I was unexpectedly, intensely amused by it. The fact that it does not have 100,000+ likes is one of those unexplainable minor injustices just like my accident; one of the few I've had in 40 years of driving and haven't had one in 25 years, not a single one my liability either, but I will admit that defensive driving is paramount to avoiding encounters even if they are not strictly your fault.
Well....perhaps for this band. But Jim Peterik, who wrote and sang this, also wrote Eye of the Tiger for Rocky 3, and many other Survivor songs. This man has had MANY hits!

Listening to this on the Ides of March, 2020, as our country shuts down due to the coronavirus. Hard to believe this song is 50 years old...remember well when it came out and was almost an hourly play on the AM radio Top 40 stations...think WLS in Chicago, where these guys are from.
"Vehicle" (1970) a AWESOME rock hit by the Ides of March !! This is Queens , Village NY backyard bar b Que and driving your Chevy unpalatable music in Queens NY ;-)
The Ides of March also charted in 1971 with La Goodbye which made to #1 on the regional charts (Chicago) but peaked at # 73 on the Billboard Hot 100. Give it a listen.

I remember being 7 years old in the early 70's and watching my older brothers cover band, Divided Union, rehearsing this song in our living room in East Los Angeles. All the neighborhood was there. What a great time!
Great God in Heaven you know I love you! Cant get any better than this!!! One of the best Rock N Roll songs ever!!!!
These fellas can rock seriously.

2020 and I am rockin to this, "I am you vehicle baby"
I've always loved this song...boy this takes me back.
The Ides of March also charted in 1971 with La Goodbye which made to #1 on the regional charts (Chicago) but peaked at # 73 on the Billboard Hot 100. Give it a listen.
Ides of March was the first concert I ever attended and this still sounds great!
I didn’t realize until just now how much Chicago sounds like them and wonder if Ides of March was an influence on Chicago.
