I'm to to point that I don't even try to correct people/change their minds anymore. Maybe I'm a bad ambassador for the lifestyle but I know my locks are clean and that's all that matters. Not to mention that people who are going rag on my dreads generally have their minds made up and won't be swayed from their misconceptions.

I have dreads and a few of my mates do too (9years, 3years and 1year), the only problem is dandruff and i used to get that with "normal" hair. I worry more about people with normal hair on the bus than i do others with dreads, as i'd say dread-ers are more aware and want to keep them clean. I love you mann, you've inspired me loads!!
I'm glad I've never been accused of having lice, that's ridiculous! I speak pretty openly about my washing & drying technique, mostly because of baking soda and the sheer volume of the dreads, but I've noticed I get accused of stealing more than having hygiene problems. Loved your rant!! Thank you.

I came here because I really don't know where else to go. I got Dreadlocks about 3 days ago, I have thick curly hair that was nearly impossible to grow out to the point that I did even though it's not very long (5 inches). So yeah I'm pretty convinced it wasn't ready, because now on day 3 I'm also convinced my "dreads" are just unknotted strands of hair rubberbanded together, even though I sat through hours of the rip and twist method (my gf helped, even though she's new to it, like I am) anyways I need to know if Im just gonna find out when I wash it on day 7 and see if they all fall apart like I think they will, or if everyone's hair was like this. I know it doesn't dread right away, but I think that all the knots from the R&T just slipped undone. Thank you!
My hair wasn't very long when I got dreadlocks so that's probably not really an issue, all short hair does is make shorter dreadlocks but they grow! I have really quite curly hair, I do think that's a good starting point for dreads and really helps them getting going nicely. I never used rubber bands and actually don't think its helpful to have something stuck on your hair like that preventing the hairs from knotting together and locking up.
Supra Drifts I would wait longer to wash them. I'd wait about 2 weeks so it gives them time to somewhat lock up. I've had my dreads for 6 months and at first they didn't really look very good. They kind of looked like what you described yours as. Except I didn't use rubber bands. I used tightening gels and it actually works pretty good. Just give them some time and patience and they'll look good. Also, the back comb method might work better for you then the twist and rip.
Supra Drifts I just started locs on my hair about a month ago, my hair is also thick and curly, about 5-6 inches long. I started with rip an twist, after my first wash they come undone, alot! so, I bought a 1mm crotche needle, re-rip anf twisted and use the needle. CHANGED my locs 100% now they feel like teen locs and dont come undone in the shower. Get a crotche hook my guy. Really helps a lot!

I'm a 53 year old disable lady whom has just put in my 1st dread she is long a fluffy and I love it .I will be working on adding more over the next few months as my disability gets in the way but I'm looking forward to my dread future much love sent your way xx
You can tell a mile away when someone does not wash their dreads! They all stick together and look generally disgusting. I managed to comb mine out around 17 years ago when the kids brought me a case of headlice (treated it but didn't want a load of deaduns in there!) the treatments were not that great back then. We have 2 little ones again now and I use a preventative spray on their hair when they go to school. It works by stopping the eggs from hatching, the youngest had a few empty eggs and no crawlers in his hair and that's all :) Nobody else caught them, touch wood!
It is so ridiculous how people think that dreads r so nasty. I love my dreads and they are cleaned probably more often then some some people with normal hair 🙄. I wish people would take the time to learn more about them then associate dreads as nasty dirty hair. That is not the reason people have dreads. Take the time people geez
While out shopping at Target a you could tell lil boy was curious about my hair his mom saw me and grabbed him away - I can only assume cause I'm a dirty dready hippie.

I find that the majority of people do assume the worst of matted hair for hygiene in my near 4 years experience. Lost count the amount of times I heard people say "I didn't know you could wash them". It is quite the sacrifice of your reputation to go outside and meet new people while wearing your hair this way. It is often very noticeable how people will try their best to not get close in proximity to me. And then there are the people who will openly berate me in the street either for being dirty or because I am white. These are absolutely things that should be expected and considered when planning to wear matted hair. For me I only find it disappointing that I have to put up with the bollocks but I know for some it could be morale destroying and really upsetting.
Speaking if cleanliness, I was wondering how you feel about Dolly Locks products? I have only been using natural shampoos and deep cleaning.. so, I want to get some shampoos that I can enjoy the smell of or that I don't have to make!! Lol

The only people that have complained about me starting my journey 3 months ago have been my brother who just doesn't think it's pretty. I don't care what most people around me think because when I'm in public for the most part I keep my dreads in a ponytail to keep them out of my face so no one really sees them. When they're longer I'll just tell them the reason for why they're in. which is a really artsy spiritual theraputic journey for me. They complain, well they're not the kind of person I want to be around anyway.

I have had my dreads for almost 2 years now, I wash my hair every couple days, they are long enough to put in my mouth now... and I have a habit of doing so... I am also a germophobe and hate most bugs in my hair... but have never had them in my hair except the occasional beetle that gets in everyone's hair... my dreads are clean, my girlfriend generally hates dreads and says the first sign of lice or bugs she will shave my head... I probably would too, but two years.... I put them in my mouth.... yummy hair.
You should show a clip of somebody with nasty dreads up cloee then show them yours up close and show the proof that yours are good! Most people with dreads take care of their dreadlocks!
l spend at least $40.00 American dollars on Dollylocks products-ppl ask me how l wash my dreads and l just say "it's hair-l just wash it"-ppl are dumb and ignorant-it is what it is-we are too cool for them anyway-: )

I tell people all the time about the misconceptions of dreadlocks every chance I get. It's a shame how much misinformation is widespread about dreads.
