The iPhone takes good pictures for a phone, but it's absolutely absurd to say it will take higher quality images than a larger, full-format sensor. This speaks more about your poor camera and processing skills than anything else. And comparing a single image to a stack of iPhone photos that are then processed as HDR is a complete apples and oranges test. Compare HDR to HDR if you want a fair test.

One big difference not mentioned in this video when comparing an iPhone 15 Pro vs Sony A7R IV and where the Sony shines comes to zooming into photos. Also if you were to print photos from an iPhone you won’t get the best quality either. For simple pictures not intended to be printed iPhone should be fine. I personally have a Sony A7R V with the same lens mentioned in this video and the type of quality between my Sony to my iPhone 15 Pro is not really comparable in my opinion. But let’s appreciate how far iPhone photography has come over the years.

Still genuinely can't believe there was a preference for overprocessed, pasty looking pictures over naturally rendered, clear pictures. I watched the blind comparison and I couldn't believe you guys couldn't tell which is which, and I guess it is a "preference" at the end of the day. Thanks for sharing your findings anyways.

I believe they could tell the difference in most cases but knowingly chose the iPhone's shots because they're biased or think that's what most people would do. Btw, they did a pretty poor job with post-processing of the Sony's images. Was it intentional or was it just lack of skills? I think both. I used to find their content quite entertaining, but their last two videos are downright deceitful

You know i am a musician and the same thing happens with music. Some laptop manufacturers hype the midrange with an EQ and people say this is BETTER because this APPEARS louder....or over compressed music sounds better than a nice dynamic mix but a bit quieter. ....or some poor hip-hop music with no chord progression and without any melodies is better than a great jazz or rock song...there is some truth to these things and of course preference too...the bottom line is that for most people the iphone does a good job. Very very close to a professional camera in many cases.

😂 A consumer good car would probably please more people than a Formula 1 car, the difference is you have to have a lot more skills in the latter case. Same with photography and photo editing. So this is mostly funny on an otherwise great channel I always follow, but I believe it’s best to keep it Apple related. Or will the next video be about video and iPhone vs RED cameras or ARRI Alexa cinema cameras

I have to agree. They basically captured the entry level market hands down. When I paired the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the BMC app - I instantly knew it was a game changer. That combination made me reconsider my whole workflow since it also generated the Proxy files automatically and everything is written to the external SSD. Damn! It is another very usable tool for a professional. For me, it is in my pocket or next to me 100% of the time. Just stop and shoot. That is the big advantage - quality images/videos instantly. Who would have thought? Enjoyed your perspective and observations.

iPhone works just fine as a point-and-shot camera. However, both DSLR & MILC cameras show a plethora of advantages, which should not be omitted. Such as an excellent selection of accessories (on/off camera flash & mic, ND filter, polarising filter, lens hood to minimise flare, etc.), a wide variety of features (full-manual control, HQ RAW capture, HQ 10-bit 4:2:2 LOG, high-speed capture, focus-stacking, pixel shift, ease of use & ergonomics, true bokeh & bokeh balls, etc.) and lenses to choose from (zooms and primes ranging from UWAs to extreme telephoto such as Nikon 1200-1700 or Canon 1200 f/5.6) and a possibility to achieve a specific look in-camera (flare, sunstars, CA, etc.).
Of course there are numerous clip-on lenses designed with smartphones in mind, but putting a lens on an another lens is a rather poor option as it introduces a variety of optical imperfections and has a negative impact on the overall IQ.
    Furthermore:
    • Video features: iPhone 15 Pro is capable of capturing LOG footage, which works just good enough in a well controlled environment, however it struggles at relatively high ISO values (>800). Both hardware and software are not good enough to deliver true-to-life, natural depth-of-field & bokeh balls, which often can make or break a given scene,
    • Photo capabilities: Highly imperfect point-and-shoot IQ (a variety of odd-looking, over-processed areas, strong pseudo-HDR, aggressive noise reduction and image sharpening, image processing that works well for static scenes, but not the dynamic ones, etc.),
    • Battery life: Swapping batteries of a DSLR/MILC takes several seconds. Some models come with two USB ports, one of which supports Power Delivery, that comes in handy during long sessions like time-lapse. Smartphones don’t allow for the battery to be swapped within seconds and using a power bank is not always an option,
    • External memory: When the memory card in a DSLR/MILC is almost full it’s perfectly possible to simply replace it with an another one within seconds,
    • Ergonomics: significantly more comfortable grip, fully articulated display in some models, a variety of useful photo/video related knobs and buttons, etc.
    • Straightforward, distraction-free experience (no text messages, no phone calls, no unnecessary notification, etc.),
    • etc.
    EDIT 17:14: Fixed some typos

    • @chidorirasenganz

I would say I mostly agree with this assessment but there’s some points I would disagree with. For example the external mics, filters, external storage etc. Even lenses isn’t as big of a difference now the Moment has updated their lenses to take better advantage of the higher res sensors. I think the biggest difference would be depth of field/bokeh and low light performance

    • @03chrisv
      @03chrisv Před 6 měsíci +3

I agree with some of what you said, but smartphones are catching up as they seem to come out with bigger sensors and better quality lenses all the time. Also a company called Beastgrip has a new upcoming product called the Dof Mk3 adapter, it allows you to mount full frame lenses from Canon, Nikon, etc onto your smartphone to get those nice bokeh balls and depth of field with a very filmic look without software trickery.
I think if you're doing client work then obviously get a professional camera, but for content creators that want to post on CZcams I think using a smartphone that you already own and just buying some gear for it is a great option, especially on a budget. Some of these newer phones with big "1inch" sensors when properly equipped stand almost toe to toe with some entry level cinema/hybrid cameras in terms of final output quality.

I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max and you're being hyperbolic. I think it has an amazing camera system... for a phone. I also work as a videographer, photographer and editor and (in my experience at least) there is absolutely no comparison when you're taking advantage of the "pro camera's" features and taking more creative videos/shots. Though if you're just using both as a point and shoot (which the vast majority of your shots were) then there really isn't much of a difference. In saying that I have used action mode when I couldn't be bothered with a gimbal and the results were brilliant, however, I would never recommend anyone buy an expensive camera for just general photography so the comparison is pretty moot.
But you got what you wanted, engagement.

I totally get what you are saying. I usually lug my DSLR on trips but I guess I’m getting older and hate wearing so much extra weight and this time on my trip to India I left it home and only used my iPhone 15 pro max and a few filters and it was excellent. I know the DSLR probably takes better photos if I want to print them but the convenience. The portraits I photographed with the iPhone are so good even I’m surprised. And the versatility. You can work around the iPhone’s limitations if need be. Thanks for the video.

People who want to do that could choose the ProRaw option, but that was not his purpose. What he wanted to convey was the fact that you did not need to do anything to the photo for et to look great on the iPhone. You need to do that on the Sony, and unless you know how to do it, which most of us me included does not. It really does not matter that the quality potential of the Sony are that much better.

My wife takes all the photos. But I like to take short videos of my kids doing cute and ridiculous stuff. I’ve heard the new iPhone has great video but what I can’t get over when using the iPhone 13 for video is the fixed aperture. Great for photography to have an open like f1.8 to compensate the small sensor. But for video in broad daylight the sensor gets blown out and ends up changing shutter speed to compensate and then motion blur falls apart completely.
But the image quality is still really good. Good enough to see how cute my kids are 😅. I always take my R6 on a trip but I leave it in the hotel sometimes bc it’s annoying to carry around.

Max said the important bit at the end: don't buy an expensive mirrorless camera unless you're using them to make money. For the vast majority of people who have no pretensions about making marketable films or selling their photos this model of iPhone absolutely stomps a pricey pro mirrorless camera in convenience, flexibility, ease-of-use, portability, low-light performance (*with caveats*) and on and on. Also, there's that very important saying, "the best camera is the one you have with you" and no one wants to lug a pro camera setup around with them all day, every day, whereas the iPhone is always there and ready to shoot and you don't even notice you're carrying it. I own both, as I make indie films, but those sneering at the iPhone are missing the boat. Appreciate this video!

Sometimes you need a pro camera but still, as a professional , when you travel it is much better to use a light and portable iPhone and you get similar results , sometimes better . Not to mention the fact that you can shoot , stabilize in a second and more easily and you don’t miss a shooting . Especially with 15 Pro Max videos and stabilization and new zoom are a giant improvement .

Not going to lie. Every single past comparison reviews you've done, I've easily spotted which was which. This one I was getting it wrong, I was finding the iPhone better in some cases and the Sony better in others. That means to me that they output is on par for social media and online platforms, and of course smaller prints. The bigger camera will probably still destroy the iPhone when it comes to large prints, as of right now anyway. For what I do, I'm questioning if I even need my Canon. I hardly use it now as it is.

A friend recently got an iPhone max 15 and and decided to compare it with a panasonic gx9 with 3 leica lenses plus an olympus macro 60mm. The 100 to 400 lense did piss over the iPhone as it could get far more detailed in distant images. With the 8 - 18 and 12 - 60 the phone held its ground. The 60mm macro on panasonic created nicer depth of field. If you don't want to mess around with apertures and shutter speeds the iPhone would be more than enough for most average users. As for photographers, where a lense can cost more than iPhone, they have full control of a camera and shutter burst rates and focusing are superior. It's horses for courses, but dedicated top end cameras won't be be replaced by phones.

Great comparison video as always. To all those complaining, of course the iPhone 15 Pro Max won’t replace a DSLR or Mirrorless Full Frame for most professionals(particularly wildlife & Sports) but MaxTech even said that in the video. So relax. But this iPhone is better than lugging around a huge dslr for all the reasons he mentioned for the vast majority of people...as well as many professionals. The term professional covers many things. There are many professionals like myself, who work exclusively online now. For Social media & online work the iPhone Pro is more than enough for many professionals. It has replaced my dslr, just like my iPad Pro has replaced my laptop. Will it work for everyone? Or every professional? No. But that’s the point. It’s a tool. Just like a dslr is. And for many, including many professionals, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is now good enough to use in place of a dslr. Heck, there have been some Hollywood movies that have been shot on an iPhone Pro! So for the average photog or filmmaker, it is more than enough. Still, there will always be casual photogs who still prefer a dslr over an iphone, just like there will be many professionals who make their living online who prefer an iPhone over a dlsr now. It’s not set in stone anymore. So it’s pointless for anyone to be upset about this topic because due to iphone advances, it’s all subjective now. There ARE indeed professionals who use iPhones over dslrs. To deny that is silly. Just like it is silly to suggest that an iphone will work for all professionals or even casual photogs who prefer a dslr. It’s all good. Camera & iphones are just tools. If it works for you, it works for you.

Funny I ran into this exact issue a few years back when shooting DSLR vs iPhone for videos but first... Max get a good shoulder strap, it will make a HUGE difference. Second... how often did you have to recharge your phone compare to an actual camera? That's what make the difference. I can easily go 2 days of shooting nothing but photos on a DSLR, you can't do that on a phone without a battery bank. And...the longer you have the phone , the faster the battery drains. I ran into this problem a lot but Pro Camera's don't have that problem. I do believe iPhones already taking over the video shooting market for sure and your right... photos will be next 🙂

I watched the comparison video and it’s insane what the iPhone can do now with still portraits and landscapes. Especially in low light.
But I think your $5000 Sony camera is an unfair comparison. That camera does way more than stills. How do the cameras compare in video or capturing moving subjects? I’m mostly curious to see how the iPhone’s image stacking handles situations where it might not have time to stack multiple images as cleanly.
I would also be curious to see a comparison with a much more modest mirrorless camera. I feel like with the sample photos you picked I wouldn’t see much difference between your A7R4 at $5000 and a lower end APS-C camera with a 24-70 kit lens for like $1500. But maybe that’s just after YT compression.
    Idk what do y’all think?

I suggest the next time you're comparing the iPhone to a DSLR you turn on Photographic Styles to warmth (+10), richness (+5) or something along those lines. It'll make the iPhone's green hue turn more purplish, similar to the natural colours of the Sony.
Of course it won't work for all kinds of photos but I believe it'll make many of them more natural.

I decided to buy the iPhone 15 pro Max instead of the Panasonic S5x as I realized I would not be able to utilize the S5x properly. I still would like to have teh S5x though but the iPhone more than fulfills the need for video I have. Especially do to ProRes Log combined with the Blackmagic Camera App and the external ssd solution. Now I only need to find a way to connect a wireless microphone and a SSD at the same time, but the wireless USB C microphones I have found tends to block additional USB-C ports on a dock do to their width

Do you ever shoot video outside? I’ve been using an iPhone 13 with the BMC app. When I’m outside the aperture is fixed wide open the ISO drops as low as it can go but the image is still too bright and the shutter speed changes to compensate. Makes motion blur really wonky.
Have you noticed that? If I upgrade to a 15 did they fix that issue with the new camera system? Or is there some fix I don’t know about that would work on my 13?

I'm sorry dude, but a pro camera completely blows away any smartphone hands down, full stop and it's not even close. Smartphone cameras are a nice convenience to have, but in no way can a smartphone camera replace a pro camera whether it's a DSLR or mirrorless. You need to edit the photos from the pro camera in most cases after the fact, but people who do photography know that editing is part of the process. I know one of you used to do wedding photography and you didn't use a smartphone for that because it would come out absolute garbage, even the iPhone 15 Pro produces garbage images in that setting. Not bashing smartphone cameras completely, they have their place for quick convenience , but will never replace pro cameras, ever.

Post shots manipulations within the phone, video editing and finally post straight to SoMe.

I would agree that spending a little extra money to get the iPhone pro versus the regular iPhone is worth it if you take a lot of photos and do a lot of videos because of the slightly improve features. Realistically, you might get better photos out of it than what you could get with something like an old crop sensor camera from Sony with a 50 mm 1.8. But you will never get realistically better photos with an iPhone then with a modern mirrorless camera with a good lens, if you are getting better photos that means you don’t know how to actually use The mirrorless camera.
Here’s the thing if you just set the Sony to auto or even to shutter priority, then you’re probably not gonna get good photos, the automotive cameras tend to pump up the ISO pump up the shutter, speed, and close the aperture for some reason. So get very point and shoot looking photos, the natural depth of field separation you get from actual lenses will likely never be properly reproduced in a digital form. You can get it, so it looks all right, and yes, maybe your average person on a compressed file on social media would never know the difference. But if you’re taking photos for any sort of professional work, then there’s no excuse not to have a proper camera. I would say there are niche situations that an iPhone might actually work better than a mirrorless camera, And having the option of log footage is absolutely fantastic, additionally, for upcoming photographers and videographer, who are young, and who parents won’t or can’t buy a $2000 set up or $1000 set up the iPhone works amazing for them. as most parents would be able to afford an extra eight or 10 bucks a month, and that’s far easier to swing on something that the parents think it’s just a hobby, and they may drop it in a month or so.

There's only one thing that makes me still use my DSLR. I had an Iphone 13 Pro Max before and now I've got an Iphone 15 Pro Max and that difference wasn't huge but still an improvement but there's still one point that the Iphone doesn't works at all regardless of model and it's when I photograph social dancing, then a real external flash is required and I use my DSLR equipment when I photograph events unfortunately. I hope there will soon be an external similar system that can be synced via cable or via Bluetooth to the iPhone, then I can completely let go of my need for system cameras

I'd be really interested in a video comparison. Because in my experience, the 1050€ Nikon Z50 absolutely shits on the iPhone 14 Pro in a studio setting (no natural light, only a video light and maybe a tiny fill light).
So there's absolutely a need for 'real' cameras.

The fact that my almost 4 year old Galaxy S20 outperforms my Canon T5i in some ways is actually pretty crazy. I'll be upgrading to Galaxy S24 Ultra which undoubtedly has a much better camera than the S20 so I probably won't even touch my Canon again, especially once I get some Beastgrip lenses and their DoF adapter to use real camera lenses on your smartphone (which funnily enough will allow me to reuse my Canon lenses). Recording in Cinema DNG will be glorious for my personal projects.

We use our iPhones for many years now. Every 2 years we upgrade. We take all our photos with them. Stored at high quality in the 2 TB iCloud. Live Photos. That now also can be portraits. That are also short videos if you want. Memories that can be generated easily with a few clicks or auto by the system. We can show these videos to our family and friends. Share them everywhere if we want with cool music. We also print out some of the pictures and frame them on the wall. No need for a big and heavy camera anymore. Already for many years. No need to work on a video on a laptop for hours. It is just some fingertips away in the power of your hands: iPhone.

  • @dawgcanjumphigh

Oh my. I have a Panasonic GH6. That thing shoots way higher video quality and takes way better pictures than these phones ever can do. Problem is, I won't lug around such an expensive camera on trips, its a risk of it getting stolen. I was just on a trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles just last week. You don't walk around with big, expensive things there, you will get robbed. So I used a phone to take the pictures and shoot the videos during my trip. I had a GoPro mounted on the chest too. Hard to get that stolen when its tightly on you. For a phone, yes you can shoot nice videos and get nice photos on the Galaxy s23 ultra or on the iPhone 15 Pro. I had the old LG V60 with me too to do some of the photography as well.

On a separate yet related topic, I would like to ask if any one of you having same experience as I do. On the iPhone 15 Pro Max, taking photos in 24 mp (natively), the area beside the camera gets hot quickly and uncomfortably.
Secondly, the focus distance is fairly far? I tried to take a picture of a document or barcode perfectly framed only to realise it’s blurred on the sides.
If the above are true issues, isn’t that concerning as those are our daily normal usages? And these are not special features.

I am not a photographer at all and, having seen your previous video, it really was a toss-up as to which camera's pictures were better - it kind of depended on what you were looking for.
Having said that, I did notice that the iPhone, presumably due to its smaller lens, distorted the shape of some tall buildings (was this the ultra-wide?) so they were not vertical but appearing to be at an angle.
I think you are right though; for point and shoot pictures, the iPhone is now comparable to a decent camera. Of course, top pros won't be throwing away their Hasselblads just yet!

  • @WarzechaSoftWorks

You can't compare HEIC files with ARW files. HEIC files are proccessed and highly compressed images like JPEGs and ARW are RAW date coming from the sensor. ARW are 14bit or 16bit in bit depth and have a ton of dynamic range and informations. A better comparison would be to use the DNG format instead.

You compared a heavily compressed image to a raw, but i believe the iphone's raw is the same size or bigger. You can also have a compressed raw on sony, which is half the size, i always use that.

Has the 15 Pro improved to a point where it no longer makes skin look like clay? I experimented with using the previous 14 Pro in RAW HDR mode for pics in school classrooms, and it was a disaster. My clients want photos where adults and kids look real and beautiful. It will be a long time before the phone can match the R6 with an L lens, especially for long shots.

Pretty soon, with the increase in performance of neural processing units in phones, the need for big cameras and lenses will be reduced to a really small group of users. Love my iPhone 15 Pro Max and I'm amazed with the picture and video quality. But every single shot I take with my small Fuji X-E4 with a quite cheap 23 mm Viltrox 1.4 lens is just better (at least when I nail focus ;)). My Fuji is cheaper than my iPhone so it also wins in that category. Don't get me wrong: I take 99% of all photos with my iPhone and that's makes it a clear everyday winner. But Fuji would win a comparison test any day.

Why would anyone want to waste time editing some instagram photo, a pro camera might be better for shooting movies or tv shows and music videos but iPhones are very close to replacing the pro cameras entirely as production companies will prioritize quick shots for the action scenes they record not to mention drone shots where iPhones would be easier to shoot the scene instead of the huge camera equipment they use to record car adds.

I'm currently here in Amsterdam with my Sony A7IV and iPhone 15 pro max. And while the iPhone does take fairly good photos, there's no way I'm picking it over my Sony. However, I will say that photography is subjective. Therefore, everyone has their own preferences. I mostly do street photography, so I carry a 35mm GM and an 85mm with my Sony. Again, if I had to choose, then I'm picking Sony all day. That also may be due to the fact that I'm not really tethered to my mobile device like most people.

This was not the best camera to compare to the iPhone. The A74 would've been the better option, because the A74 fewer megapixel and autofocus system is more optimized (especially for low light performance) and updated (and cheaper) than the A7RIV. You're testing old technology compared to Apple's latest technology - at least compare it to the A7RV. I own a A7RIV. This review was quite biased/skewed due to a lack of a proper comparison.
