55 yr old minimalist here. I would suggest holding on to your most meaningful greeting cards. I vote no to digitalizing cards. My husband recently passed away. His Love notes and cards are a source of comfort to my broken heart, especially since choosing the perfect card was important to him. Physically holding the card in my hands helps me to feel close to him again. I also cherish telegrams my grandfather sent my grandmother while he was overseas/frontlines during World War II - priceless❤️

Adding this comment about halfway through (maybe you’ll mention it): we all think we have plenty of time to do this but might not. I was reminded that we don’t know when we’ll need to declutter due to health issues when I saw two friends debilitated overnight by illness. And just recently discovered my estranged sister had to move abruptly to assisted living four years ago. She wasn’t that old (73). I began decluttering my inherited stuff (parents and other sister) seven years ago. I still need to get another 10% out. NOT striving for minimalism but want to be able to move easily, quickly if needed due to health. I have so much out now that I celebrate when I fill a box by driving to my local charity shop and stopping at a favorite coffee shop as a treat. I love the feeling of getting it out. Just started a new box and already have two clothing items I know I don’t need in it. Items deteriorate, even if we’re not using them so it’s better to let someone use it while its condition is still very nice.

So many great ideas. My kids tell me they don’t want any of my things which makes me kinda sad. I’ve been trying to get rid of things, it’s hard but then when it’s gone you don’t even think about it. Such freedom

I am 77 and have three 12 place settings of bone china. I have no children and my brother said he only wants my plastic Bronco tumblers. I use one set of the china for my every day use as I like them. I don’t worry about breaking any pieces as I have so many. My brother’s church has an annual garage sale so I put things I haven’t used in a box in his workshop. If I decide I need it before the garage sale, I can go get it. I didn’t have to pull anything before last month’s garage sale😊. Lots of great ideas plus a reminder that I need to periodically look at what I’m I am keeping. Thanks for sharing !

Here’s a suggestion regarding inherited china. I bring out the plates I inherited from my great-grandmother when my kids and grandchildren visit. While we eat, we take a moment to remember where we’ve come from and I tell a quick story about her to help keep her name alive. She died at age 97 when I was a teen. When a plate breaks we simply sweep it up and away. The plates aren’t important but they are a catalyst for the stories.

This is great. I remember eating on my grandparents china. It all had such a delicate feel. Now it’s all about durability to withstand dropping and getting banged around.

In an effort to declutter, I recently sold my awesome drum set that I played almost every day for the last 25 years. I was so happy that the older gentleman who bought the drums was absolutely elated to own such a great drum set (and all the hardware) for a fraction of their value. I wasn’t expecting to get so much joy seeing my drums now being played by someone who truly wanted them. He was so happy when he came to play them and pick them up. I know they went to a good home! (His wife didn’t seem as happy).

People have too much stuff. That's why on every corner there is a storage building here in Florida. Move down here with their stuff and put it in storage. Why?

"Constantly going through the decluttering process".. spot on. And the the hardest to get rid of items are the ones we have attached sentimental value and worth to. But, hanging on to "junk" can also occur.. the rationale being it's too expensive to replace.. I might NEED this some day,, basically an entitlement mentality - based on fear. Ohh, yes, many's the 3AM in the morning I'm awake.. trying to figure out how to deal with STUFF. My son moved out nearly 10 years ago.. taking exactly 2 suitcases and 2 tool boxes.. and leaving behind nearly everything else. So, now I have to spend 100's of $$ to take HIS stuff and junk to him.. because he refuses to deal with this issue.. rather than just sell or toss it. He gets 3 months free storage.. the rest is up to him. I've had friends who moved and threatened to put all their offspring's "left behind" junk out on the curb.. to make them show up. Guess I'm too much of a nice dad.. Thanks for doing this video.

All good points. I re-frame from phrases like, "will I use it" or "could I use it", which both will go to "well I could". Instead I use "am I likely to use it", which then ends up at "not likely" and out it goes. In planning for things after the employed years (retired), I did keep some things that I didn't know for sure if I would use or not. In getting more acclimated and decided on how I wanted to build this time, I've found some things fit needs for this time and others don't. Obviously I get rid of don'ts. As was one of your points, if not going to use it why hang on to it.

But what if you put the item in a box in the garage and forget you have it. Then you say you need one and rebuy it. Yikes.

Have a reputable company to empty your home or apartment. Put what you are taking to your new country in the bathtub. Thy can do it in one day. I always used Rubbermaid as storage. Give them a number and use index cards to record contents.

I have some rules I live by now. 1 in 1 out. If I get anything that I already have like shirts, jeans, cups, glassware, etc. I take an older one and give away or get rid of. For instance I received a gift of new cornhole bags. I had 1 main set and 1 backup set ( because they do get worn and bust open after heavy usage usually in the middle of a game ). So I gave my current used set to a neighbor who needed them and used the new ones. Next one is when clearing out drawers or closets, etc. Have I used this thing in the past year? no? Then I do not need it. Out it goes. I mean how many spatulas does one need? !!! hahaha
