  • Learn how to sew a french seam. French seams are perfect for use on lightweight or sheer fabrics (such as silk). The seam encases all of the raw fraying edges of the fabric inside a tiny seam allowance of 1/4" (5mm).

I am so glad you used a printed piece of material that clearly distinguishes the Right side of the material from the Wrong side of the material. So many people will post these type of videos with Right sides that look exactly like the Wrong side = useless.

I was sewing AWANA bags and one of my tenants came over to "tell me how to sew" and asked if I was using French seams. Not familiar with that stitch I simply told her that as I was doubling the fabric I was doing them like I do pillow cases. She began to describe Flat-fill Seams. Not wanting to continue that discussion or get into anything I politely listened and decided to Google the French Seam. Thank you so much.

Although I learned to sew almost 60 years ago, (the machine didn't even reverse, much less zig zag!) and my mother was an excellent seamstress, I never learned how to do a French seam until today, with your excellent video. Today I only make doll clothes for my granddaughter, but finishing those small seams so they don't fray is important to me. I'll soon be teaching her how to sew, too! Thank you for your clear instruction and video. I'll be watching more of them!

Your voice is easily understood, the instructions are clear and your choice of fabric (wrong side easily distinguishable from the right side) really helps. Aneka, so clear, and every detail is there. I do have rather a 'roll-y' fabric. I think it is a polyester but has the look of crepe, so when I turn the French seam inwards to make the final seam, it is hard to get the first seam to sit on the edge, it just wants to roll. I do like the fact you use a fabric that has a clear 'wrong' and 'right' side. Once again, your turorials win hands down. Thank you!

Wow. These are such wonderful videos. I have wanted to learn to sew for years, and I've learned so much from you. There are hidden gems in every video, things I never would have thought of, or, things I never heard of. Where I live, there is very little to be found in the way of in person sewing instruction. All you can get is offered by a fabric store, but they're not all that concerned with the quality of their teaching. What you do find, is the instructor dashing through the lessons, crowded classes, and the entire enterprise is very, very expensive. Inconvenient class times are the rule, instead of the exception, and the basic "How To's" are glossed over, as quickly as possible, to cram as much into one hour as is humanly possible. You, and your excellent videos, have revived my interest in sewing. Thank you, ever so much.

This was wonderfully done! I'm just learning to sew for a costume and this was very helpful. I learned just like you said with silk, pleather doesn't like to go in reverse as well /:

A good instructor will always give the "why" as she or he describes the "how" as this will give the student an extra grasp of the instruction. This lady, Anika is a really gifted instructor.
