  • Hello and Welcome! Last time I started discussing how I inspired to go back on a journey to the recent past to take a look at some of the ABC sitcoms of the 80s and 90s when they all took a trip to Walt Disney World for some free advertising and some fun cross promotion. It's time to continuing that discussion so today we'll be talking about Rosanne, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Middle and Black-ish. Let's take one more trip with all the families as they visit the most magical place on earth.

The Middle episode was so hilarious! I recently rewatched all the episodes as I’m laid up with a cast on my foot! Their Disney episode was my favorite!

Definitely remember the Full House one like it was yesterday. As a kid I thought they just did those episodes because Disney parks were fun and iconic. Never occurred to me that ABC and Disney were corporate partners.

Back in the day, if you inquired about a Disney World trip, they would send a "planning package". While I don't recall if it had park maps, it does seem likely since it did include a 15ish minute videotape of the parks and Rosanne was right in that era.

We were there the week before they filmed The Middle episodes. We left the day they started taping I believe. They were painting the castle in preparation (I think) because they had scaffolding up. It would’ve been fun to watch them film!

The Blakish episode was epic! As someone with lots of friends that do Disney on VIP tours only, the feeling of ending the tour is very real 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Boy meets world - had a Disney episode : some scenes were at Epcot Center , couple scenes were also filmed in magic kingdom Orlando.

Central Florida does experience cool and cold weather during the winter months. And Disney Parks do issue park maps to guests before their arrival at the resort.

The wonder years went to Disneyland last year and it was great how the made it feel like it was the 60s and not current resort. I enjoyed that episode, which was the last of a great show :(

Rosanne was one of the best shows ever made... it was real life...and not full of fake fluffy stuff... it showed the real struggles most middle and lower midclass American working families have. It also showed, that no matter how hard life got, family sticks together, but normally.... not fluffy.

Love your videos! I can answer your question about "Could you get the park maps before you went back in the 90s when the Roseanne episode aired?" See I grew up in Orange County and went to Disneyland all the time. (In fact I work there now and have for many years!) But when I moved away to Colorado, I took a trip back to go to Disneyland because I missed it so much. And there are 2 ways they could have done it. The way I did it was I went to the Disney Store to buy my tickets in advance. That way after the tickets were bought all I had to do was worry about travel. I was staying with an old high school friend in Anaheim so lodging was free. When I bought my tickets (and some Disney dollars for spending money, member them?) They just gave me the park map. (Disneyland at the time only had one park.) So assuming the Langord Mall was typical of most shopping malls in mid America at the time, there would have been a Disney Store there to facilliate this. The other way is if they used a travel agent. This is less widespread now than it was then because most of us make our travel arrangements on our phones or computers. But back then it would have been easier for Roseanne to use a travel agent. There were multiple rooms at whatever hotel they were at and a bunch of plane tickets. So as soon as they got their tax refund (which is where the money came from in the story) she could have gone to the travel agent and booked everything through them all at once. Those agencies would include park marks when they gave you your tickets. Hope this was helpful!

Also since this was paid by tax return, they probably filed as soon as they could and got the refund (or got a return advance from H&R Block). Lower income people like me do that ASAP. I usually get my return in early to mid February so your guess about what time of year this was is probably spot on! I could also observe that Illinois natives don't know how to dress in Florida but you're right. Other people in the shots are dressed similar. Though it's supposed to be early February (I'm guessing), they likely shot at least a couple months earlier and did a lot of shooting with extras before park opening. That happens at Disneyland a lot.

@@bleedinggreen5748 They got the money for the trip when Dan quit his job with the city. He had vacation time compensation. Instead of saving the money, they decided to blow it on the trip to Disney. Again, showing how most people are... they get a windfall of money, that would pay off some bills...but instead, they take a vacation.... part of the reality of life the show went for.

If it takes place in the Fall it has to look as such, which is why they have shots of it with Fall decorations instead. They probably have a lot of extra shots of it as well due to MNSSHP happening during that time as they need to use it for promos.

It was always the ABC network’s sitcoms. ABC is owned by Disney. Cheap cross promotional tourism advertising.
I also think NBC had a deal with Vegas, because a bunch of their shows went to Vegas in the 2000s.

I remember collecting theme park brochures when on vacation and they featured park maps. You could usually get these at hotels, road rest stops and airports. They were everywhere and used to advertise the park in places tourist tend to frequent. I thought they still made these?

Interesting! I always collected the maps (and still do!) anytime I'm down in the parks but I thought you could only get them on Disney property for example, not before you got to the area.

If I remember right, the family from Black-ish lives in LA. So, they're gonna fly across the country to go to Disneyworld, when Anaheim is right there? I get that hardcore Disney fans would do that, but it seems weird for casual fans to do lol.
