    The term is Scordatura! That is tuning of a string instrument that is different from the normal, standard tuning. Actually there are many examples in classical violin music where this is required to make the piece playable or to make it sound better . A few examples:
    Antonio Vivaldi, violin concerto in A major, Op.9, No.6, in which the violin's G string is tuned up to an A.
    Niccolò Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 initially required the strings of the solo violin to be tuned a semitone higher to match the original key of E flat major.
    Camille Saint-Saëns, solo violin in Danse Macabre, where the E-string is tuned to E flat

    Being raised on Indian classical music, for me the standard tuning is tonic-fifth-tonic-fifth. What pitches that corresponds to are dependent on what key the singer is singing in (assuming you're an accompanist).

    • @bmint
      @bmint Před 7 dny

      When I guitar I follow the singer or the piano or the bass.. different every time for me..
      For violin should I only follow the singer??

      @@bmint Well, in Indian classical music, there is a hierarchy of importance, and the human voice is at the top of that hierarchy. In fairness, though, when you have instruments like piano or [bamboo] flute which are mechanically fixed to some absolute pitch, there are practical limitations that effectively make them "lead" instruments rather than accompanists. But as a rule, yeah, string players are going to tune to the vocalist if there is one. If there is another lead instrument, you tune to it. If you're the lead performer, then tune to whatever tonic you like.

    Thank you so much for that intro!
    I had it! I was doing it..
    My cello playing friend said let me tune that..
    It’s totally foreign to me now..
    I liked when I tuned it by ear like a guitar!!
    I did dgbe..
    Because my fingers know those strings..
    I cannot do standard violin tuning.. it’s kind of weird 😂

    I'm a bass player but I've built all the instruments I've played, I just wanted to say how grateful I am to hear someone else have such a open and accepting mind for music, musicians and our choices of instruments. If there is a such thing, I would deem you "musically progressive" and consider me part of the movement!!

    I'm new to violin in general, I bought a electric violin for like 350myr I kept tuning it around but it sounds a bit weird and well I tried some sheets and seriously it sounds weird as much as I try to tune it, do I need something more?

  • @niklaslang5224
    @niklaslang5224 Před rokem

    Great! Anything is possible! 👍😃 Do you know anyone who has a violin tuned a half step higher? The idea would be to be able to play jazz in Ab, Eb and Bb together with wind instruments as easily as we normally play in G, D and A. Could be an excuse to buy an extra electric violin… 🙃

    • @ElectricViolinShop
      @ElectricViolinShop  Před rokem

      Aye. I'd avoid tuning a violin any higher. They're pretty screechy as it is. I wouldn't hesitate to tune a half step lower, though. Or if you play a solid body, just use a pitch shifting pedal.

    • @niklaslang5224
      @niklaslang5224 Před rokem

      Ok! Tuning down could also be an option. 👍 I have the Pitch fork for my YEV, but I get really confused when I hear one tone from the violin and another from the speaker. Guess I need to play louder… 😎

  • @monoswinger
    @monoswinger Před rokem

    For me it would be more interesting to tune up with the logic of the guitar. Put down all your fingers and than change the string at the maj6th. Like E C# A# G

      In fact they did. They tuned the A to a different pitch than how we have it today.

    • @ElectricViolinShop
      @ElectricViolinShop  Před rokem +2

      Absolutely. If they were playing with an organ, they'd have to tune to that organ. And there was no standard frequency for A. Each organ was different. And they weren't tuned to equal temperament, either.

      maybe you like the tone of violin more? maybe you want to try a different tuning for fun? maybe you have good violin technique and not guitar? maybe, even, you want to do things that you find fun. maybe you want to create art in ways that you find pretty. you can appreciate a beautiful instrument like those from the viol family without swearing to stick to one tradition and never changing.
