The term is Scordatura! That is tuning of a string instrument that is different from the normal, standard tuning. Actually there are many examples in classical violin music where this is required to make the piece playable or to make it sound better . A few examples:
Being raised on Indian classical music, for me the standard tuning is tonic-fifth-tonic-fifth. What pitches that corresponds to are dependent on what key the singer is singing in (assuming you're an accompanist).
I'm a bass player but I've built all the instruments I've played, I just wanted to say how grateful I am to hear someone else have such a open and accepting mind for music, musicians and our choices of instruments.
