    Cackling at the thought of someone trying to find a definitive "worst" FE unit and likely finding themselves pages deep in arguments about it on every single potential website that discusses such things. I think we can mostly all agree Sophia IS at least one of the worst.

    Cielo does have exactly one(!) upside to him: He's almost vital to beating the hidden superboss due to his weakness to status ailments, since you HAVE to have a character sleeping at certain points to survive his otherwise unblockable mega attack.

    For FE, Sophia may be the most infamous bad unit and is defo one of the worst, but she can at least be good if you sacrifice your sanity to train her. My vote for the actual worst goes to Bantu from FE12 aka New Mystery of the Emblem. Not only do his bases suck ass, all of his growths suck too so no chance of catching up, he joins not late but not early enough to try and fix the situation, and he can't do effective damage to anything which is a must in FE12's cavalry and armour heavy maps. So in other words, he sucks and has literally nothing going for him

  • @fuman7057
    @fuman7057 Před 4 měsíci +21

    A couple honorable mentions
    1) *Septerra Core* - Runner
    Slowest character, meaning fewest turns and less damage output as a result, grants the least MP, worst magic, needs to be partied with one of two mechanics for healing, and was a worse thief than the best character in the game. The healing thing is problematic since Maya (protagonist) could not be removed from the party.
    2) *Warsong/Langrisser (Sega Genesis)* - Tiberon as a Crocodile Knight
    His only class paths are Crocodile Knight and Knight. Knights are below average overall, but the CK moved painfully slowly outside of water tiles… and water tiles were gone for good before halfway into the game, making CK the worst path.
    3) *Devil Survivor 2* - Jungo
    He’s a beast early in the game, but quickly falls into uselessness. Jungo puts his stats into STR most of the time, which makes him unable to equip the better physical moves and passives due to stat requirements. Jungo not only gets KO’d by magic attacks in 1 or 2 hits, but he can’t equip skills to bypass physical resistance and reflects until the end of the game, with said resistances being common.

    • @robertoquintero5200
      @robertoquintero5200 Před 3 měsíci +1

      The best one is Otome because she obtains resistence to curse, but Fumi and Jungo are dangerous on their last fights, especially against the secret bosses...

      @fuman7057 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @robertoquintero5200
      Agreed about Otome, although Hinako is almost as good.
      Jungo is quickly outclassed by Keita due to Keita putting points into Agility much earlier. The only character almost as bad is Ronaldo, but that's due to Ronaldo's poor availability until the final day.

      Beat Septerra Core a few months ago and yeah, it's sad how hard Runner falls off. Honestly I could get over him not being good at magic and thus a poor endgame choice, but taking so long to attack in a game where missing is weirdly common *and* later enemies will put up some insanely annoying defenses if you don't kill them first is a shame.
      At least we get another playable robot in Lobo, who may not be the best but does well enough that I didn't feel like I was gimping myself using him.

    • @fuman7057
      @fuman7057 Před 3 měsíci

      @BlueItem1
      Lobo’s main issues were that him and Maya filled basically the same role and his poor party flexibility.
      Maya always got your best Engine since she was always in the party. Lobo could only work with Grubb before near the end of the game when you could do the sidequest to have him and Led make peace.
      I pretty much dropped Runner as soon as Corgan joined. Runner was especially bad because Badu was literally better in almost every way. Badu had all his own unique gear, whereas Runner had to compete with Lobo for armor (and Led for leg armor) and competed with half the party for Engines.

    • @BlueItem1
      @BlueItem1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@fuman7057 All true, sadly. Although basically being locked into a party comp with arguably the best character in the game isn't so bad for Lobo.
      I do appreciate that outside of Runner everyone else is at least usable though. Sure the endgame became 'spam AoE summons and elixirs to restore MP,' but even before that I was able to rotate my party and never feel *too* bad about it.

    I gotta disagree with Swin, his battle order is an early game reduces delay and ups str with only 2 BP needed. Basically, its going to be the best battle order in C's route for general spam. For his relevant time early game, you dont have a high crit chance and so he is actually the closet thing you have to an early game BP generator. Basically, he is actually useful for the early game as you simply lack a better choice(*Cough Arios*) and even in the mid game has a spammable generically good battle order.
    Is he bad late game? Yes. But its so easy to break everyone at the end that you can argue that several characters are pointless because who is going to challenge McBurn? Surely there was like a suikoden character who everyone recruits late game and drops from existence. At least, Swin can be helpful for C's route.

    Shadow Dragon Bantu is way worse than Sophia. He can't be reclassed, he can't hit range, he can't survive magic damage, he has low movement, his growths are terrible, his level ups are limited compared to other units because of his class, he can't use the divine stone, and if you miss the first dragon stone he's completely useless because you can't buy them. It’s also worth noting that when you get sharla she arguably makes your party worse until you can replace her. With the whole chain attach system rewarding having a bunch of characters that either are all physical or all magical ( or just melia) sharla is a significant cut to your chain attack potential. Reyn’s sword drive has the highest potential damage of any art in chain attacks and not being able to build up the red art multiplier nearly as much really hurts. So if a fight is really giving you trouble it’s often best to try to get sharla killed intentionally and let reyn and shulk go on the offensive as much as possible. Really I think she could be much higher since most party members that suck don’t passively make the good units you have worse by existing but sharla does. The only characters worse then sharla would have to also not only suck themselves but make everyone else around them suck and even more so then sharla. Sophia doesn’t infect people with her garbage hitrate she just never hits anything and even when invested in never amounts to anything. You won’t gain anything by actively letting the enemies kill her

    To be fair, Edward can be used in the GBA and PSP ports of FF4. While one might wonder why you would use him at all, he can actually be a good party member. Not only does his Apollo's Harp deal significant damage to dragon enemies, if you take the time to grind to the 90s level range, his stats skyrocket like an onion knight.

    I don't necessary disagree that Sophia could be the worst FE character, narratively she is not even really a combatant, just tagging along for Fae. However, if she survives her starting chapter she can be quickly promoted to sage for staves and you can' be useless with stave access. I don't even think she is the worst character in her own games as Cath is truly terrible. No stats, no growths, in the thief class that cannot promote, has little use for more than one and you already get two better thiefs way earlier.

    As someone already said fe12 bantu is worst than Sophia but it can be argued another character on fe6 is worse than Sophia in Wendy/Gwendolyn both are similar units having bad bases mainly frail,slow, inaccurate and weak with low base levels with main difference being that one wendy join much earlier than Sophia but has worse class in the terrible knight and eventually general class which has worse weapons in lances and the inaccurate axes this is especially bad for character that starts weak do to not having good 1-2 range,less move,less utility than Sophia,worse starting situation thanks join like 1/2 chapters before the western isles a large group of chapter filled with axes user that may as well be designed to make trainer her impossible do to the weapon triangle disadvantage, enemies being bulky,fast and really strong meaning she does no damage,is very inaccurate,gets hit easily and easily gets one rounded and final for wendy is she has more rounded growths but this back fires as wendy lacks any particular good growths other than hp meanwhile Sophia does have strong growths in magic and res leaving Sophia a actually niece if trained as a hard hitting though inaccurate mage that can have large staff range and high healing and can soak in enemy status staff and seige tomes meanwhile wendy doesn't have any notable niece that isn't just a meme.
    Honestly the more i type i realize wendy is worse than Sophia with the only wendy has over Sophia is joining earlier yet somehow fe12 bantu is still worse than wendy.

    FE creator Shouzou Kaga's game TearRing Saga has this girl named Krishna who joins with bad bases and has really bad growths on the important stats that even the guy who you recruit right after who was so obviously designed as a joke unit is more useful than her because if you give him a kill you get all of the enemy's stuff which you can plan around and combine with the archer girl who won't kill humans, Krishna's only useful thing is a glitch where she duplicates herself and allows you to hilariously multiply items.

    Cielo was only useful in DDS1 for the Hitoshura fight, with that fight being nearly impossible without him. Besides that, his stats were all Agility and Luck, which only made him a pseudo-tank against enemies that spammed instant death moves, as Cielo had the most defense against those attacks.
    Cielo was massively buffed in DDS2, since his stats were reworked to decrease his Luck and put it heavily towards Magic. The main buff for Cielo is that is Ailment weakness was changed to only mental ailments: Charm, Panic, and Sleep.

    Worst part about Sophia is her low accuracy. Even if you wanted to use her, you'd need to set up low HP enemies for her to kill, but she'll just miss them instead. But at least she has a bit of a niche as 1 of 3 characters that can use dark magic, and offering staff support after promotion. If Ray died, you could consider using her instead.
    The true worst character in that game is Wendy. She's in the worst class, the knight class, which has the lowest movement. Knights are supposed to be tanks, but her base stats are so low that she fails at that utterly. Lances are also inaccurate in Binding Blade, so like Sophia, she'll fail to get the kills you set up for her. And unlike Sophia, Wendy has to compete with about 15 other characters who also use lances, all of which are better, many of which have mounts. There's no reason to ever use her.

    A lot of people will try to tell you that Bantu is a bad unit, or that there is no way to make him useful. They are wrong, and as bad and ugly as the DSFE games. Simply put, Bantu is a god among men and not using him does nothing but make the game harder.
    Bantu requires minimal investment to do his job. With just 5 energy drops, a strength level, and 5 speedwings, he is able to double and one round Chapter 12 Fire Dragons and Chapter 13/14 Ice Dragons. With an additional two points of speed, he can double and one round Chapter 15 Paladins and Horsemen, and with another three, he can double and one round Chapter 16x Berserkers.
    Bantu is also so broken that he doesn't even follow the game's rules. Normally, the Rainbow Potion can't break caps. Bantu doesn't give a fuck about that though, and breaks whatever he wants to break, including his caps and the game itself which cannot hold up against Bantu when he gets his four starspheres. Not even Medeus can handle Bantu, as he deals a mighty 3 damage, letting him get the kill after a max strength Marth hit + crit - not that he needs help from Marth of course. Intsys were of course aware of Bantu's strength, so they tried to nerf him in the higher difficulties by making it impossible to get dragonstones other than the Firestone. They failed, since Bantu still makes the game his bitch even on Lunatic Reverse.
    Next time someone tries to tell you that Bantu is bad, tell them that they are bad and ugly. The only tier appropriate for Bantu is of course Bantu Tier, which should be at least ten tiers above S Tier.

    Suikoden 3 gave you the chance to bring an aditional 7th member to your 6 fighters. This characters bring additional support abilities.
    Some give you small or big healing after every fight
    Some increase the money you get
    Some let you get discounts
    But there are some who have NO abilities, besides their use in base (since some have stores around). A character with no ability for the team would only serve as an extra spend if you go sleep at an inn since they charge per person

    I probably would have split this list into two: one for games that have a handful of characters anything less than 12 and one for games that have a large cast anything more than 15. There are a ton of games where there are a ton of filler characters which are nothing but dead weight. More than half the cast of Radiata Stories are absolutely unusable even in extremely niche circumstances they should be useful in. Games like Radiata Stories, Chorno Cross, Sukoden, and so many more just have too many bad characters because they're mostly a collect-a-thon. Now most characters can have a specific use so they are completely dead weight like how Cielo can be used in one hard as nails boss fight because he isn't weak to an element but outside of that one instance he is really bad.

    As far as fire Emblem is concerned, Sophia's definitely one of the worst party members in any RPG. But imho, she's outdone in the sucking department by someone else from her own game... Wendy. Or Gwendolyn. She is an armored knight in a game that is unkind to armored knights by default, because of the big maps. She also comes underleveled with godawful base stats and her growths aren't good enough to make up for them. Her join time sucks too. Not because she joins late, but rather because she doesn't join early enough to try to fix the situation. Well, that, and because the chapters right after her joining are heavy on axe users - her worst match-up as a lance user. Not that sword users are a good match up for her though. While Sophia at least has range in the form of magic, which allows her to avoid counterattacks from most enemies, Wendy is a melee fighter, meaning she has to risk damaging counters. Unless you use a Javelin, that is... but Javelins are really bad in Binding Blade. About the only way to feasibly train her is the Triangle Attack... which requires fielding Bors and Barth, both of whom are also armored knights. And having them surround a enemy unit. Did I mention armored knights have low mobility? And Binding Blade has big maps?
    Dishonourable mentions go to:
    *Karla - Blazing Blade* - Her coming late (as in 3 chapters before endgame) wouldn't be that bad on its own. But what gets her here is everything else about her. She requires actively using Bartre, whom is himself one of the worst units in the game, to recruit. For all that, you get a Swordmaster with awful bases. In a game where swords are one of the worst weapon types. Even if you didn't mind swords, Harken and Jaffar come not long before she does with better bases in most relevant areas, and odds are Guy and Lyn, neither of whom are great, will be way better. This isn't even getting into Raven. Or how he and Harken are a better class.
    *Lyre - Radiant Dawn* - She's a Laguz unit, which is bad enough in a game where most units DON'T have to wait several turns to be able to fight... but she is also a cat, the worst Laguz class in the game. After waiting several turns to get her to transform, you get... a unit with 22 attack. That’s right, her offense is equal to Mist. Who is a healer, mind you. That's just plain embarrassing. It gets worse: she is melee locked, meaning she is always taking counter attacks. When she isn't very durable. To add insult to injury, she shares play time her sister Lethe, who is barely better, and with Ranulf, who, aside from being much better than both Lyre and Lethe, is forced for a good chunk of part 3.

    There's not much worse then Sully from Lufia 2 (technically he's a capsule monster, which is treated as your "5th" party member).
    He's suuuuper slow, in a battle system where agility determines turn order. He'll always be the last participant to get an action in a turn, in every battle ever. And what does he do with his action? He'll most likely Defend. And I think Defend only works on the turn it's done on (too bad he's always the last person to get a action before the turn ends).
    Honestly, he's mostly just there to take hits instead of your other party members (to be fair, he's rather tanky). But all the other capsule monsters actually attack (one of them can heal too, and one of the capsule monsters is super fast too).

    If we are talking about FE useless units, Sophia is not the worst. She is at worst still a ranged unit with access to staves.
    No, the actual worst FE unit that isnt meant to be intentionally a joke is likely Lyre from Radiant Dawn, or Bantu from FE3.
    Lyre is basically Sophia but melee with zero utility as a unit. She joins as a cat laguz, is melee locked, has no abilities to speak of, and her competition when it comes to laguz shares availability with her AND the best one is even mandatory (Ranulf).
    There are other units that have either good growths or decent utility or base stats. Lyre does absolutely nothing useful and even when given special treatment, she is just inferior to Ranulf, Lethe and Volug.
    Bantu is likewise a unit with terrible base stats, horrible growths, and zero utility.

    I actually think Sophia isn't the worst unit in her game, that title would go to Gwendolyn.
    She joins as a level 1 Armor Knight in a game that is NOT kind to armored units, so right off the bat there's a problem.
    Her growths are high for her game's standards, but the ones that matter the most to an Armor Knight: STR and DEF aren't even that good so you can often end up with her having low STR and DEF and her class' SPD cap means that even with capped SPD she still can find herself not doubling.
    Her bases are abysmal to the point where the first Archer Gwendolyn sees on hard mode can straight up one round her in Chapter 8, remember, she dies to every enemy on the map. Hell she joins in a spot with a wall that has 10HP and she's so weak that she BARELY breaks it by one point of damage, yes she has 4STR at base and she's an armor knight.
    Not to mention you have her brother, Bors who is avaiable from Chapter 1 and while he himself isn't great he has much better bases stats, and his growths aren't much worse so he could easily be much stronger at that point and competition for the Knight Crest is tight. Wendy is also worse than Barthe, another armor unit who joins on the same map and while he has no speed or resistance, he has a ton of ATK, DEF and HP, he's everything you'd expect a Knight to be. So Wendy is the worst unit in the worst class of her game. Not to mention the already promoted Douglas you get later.
    Horrible movement, horrible bases and growths that aren't enough to fully offset it. She also has no utility whatsoever. While Sophia is terrible she nets you a Guiding Ring only she is capable of finding and if you struggle enough and promote her she can actually use staves and dark magic packs a punch, especially with most foes having weak resistance. Wendy offers... well... nothing. It's much worse being a bad knight than being a bad magic user.

    I see a lot of Aeris comments. I think the ONLY reason people would consider a bench character is because of what happens. Yes she has great limit, but no part of the 1st disc is hard enough to need them. Also to get her final I feel you would have to grind enough that you would be over leveled anyway. Most bench her to avoid wasting exp and sources going to her to only lose her. I've used her from start to finish and in casual play only got to 1-2 in her limit. For me Tifa gains her limits the quickest then Cloud then whoever my third is. If Aeris' limits had any killing power she might grow faster.

      I remember in FF7 i would bench Aeris when you could change your party members. The primary reason is that she doesnt is good at physical attacks, which is a problem in FF7 to finish the normal fights. Also her limit breaks dont do damage, but thats a flavor thing. I only remember meeting one person that actually played it other than me for over a year after it came out. Such a shame too, the soundtrack was 10/10. I'd still rather use Kongol over Shana though 🥺 Slow damage is still better than no damage.

      You can easily use her into the endgame. She's hardly bad enough that you can't clear content if you use her. I swapped in and out everyone throughout the game in multiple playthroughs and I never struggled just because I had Sharla on the team.
      She's only considered bad for optimization reasons. You can clear stuff reliably and fine with Sharla, but if you've learned how to play the game you can clear without a healer, which usually means stuff dies faster. Most people look at like "Why kill stuff slow and safe when you can kill stuff fast and see big numbers?"
      That being said, she's actually one of the best units you can bring if you're trying to grind out enemies way above your level. The usual tactics don't work because of how some of the underlying mechanics work (Dunban is straight up useless) so Sharla is pretty much mandatory.

Jive basically has a bunch of useless abilities that uses his current HP to base damage on and his HP sucks. And he can't attack at all until the Assassin's dagger, which will help him a bit. It doesn't help that there is only one Final Outfit so you really can't use him and Brina together. Brina though, she's actually okay. Shockingly so. Dance is good. Every single effect is useful to some degree. From the healing dances, to the buffs. It's random yes, but it's always useful unless you get Esuna dance with no status ailments on or raise dance with no one dead and even those can be useful. Assassin's dagger lets her attack too and she's fast to uses instant KO effect on it which works for a few floors of the endgame. Protect Ring also mitigates low HP with defense multipliers. Obviously, there are way better characters than Brina, but she was surprisingly fun to use. TLDR, Calca is completely useless until Assassin's dagger. Brina can dance and always do something useful for the party.
      I tested every single party member for the end game and so many characters I was told would be horrible were actually good, like Izayoi and her versatility and Harley for her Gil Toss which was surprisingly powerful in mob fights.

    I'm not familiar with all of these characters, but you nailed it with jogurt. For me, Edward (Gilbert) from the original final fantasy 4 is the most useless that comes to mind. Granted, in later versions where he can be used in the end game, he's MUCH better....actually usable.

      Edward is a beast in After Years. Salve is so laughably busted in that game. 4000 HP heal to everyone with X Potions and economical ring.

    Fire emblem I can think of way too many units that miss out on anything. I'll go with Amelia from sacred stones as her level doesn't give her any chance to be useful
    Guess anise from tales of the abyss as her only use for me was scanning enemies in the arena to fill the monster index.
    Tales of graces Malik and pascal where they aren't useful much for defeating the enemies with the shields and even when they did get a use the mains are just better in every way
    Kh some of the Disney units who only got a single use. Donald and goofy could go here if they didn't get good uses later on
    Shining refrain resonance the male support characters who brick your game forcing you to grind them for one specific moment. Bad gameplay decision

      As far as Fire Emblem is concerned, Amelia is bad... but at least she is workable without tearing your hair out in frustration. That’s more than I can say for Wendy, Sophia, Karla, Lyre, Meg, PoR Rolf, Nyx (especially in Revelation), Setsuna (especially in Revelation, but she is a real stinker in Birthright too), Arthur, Charlotte, Subaki (in Birthright), Rinkah...

      @@veghesther3204 What? Natalia party heals faster than Tear. Cast times are just far, far longer for Tear even with her spells being AOE. Natalia can single target cure three if not all four party members in the time it takes for Tear to heal the entire party. Plus Tear is way better off spamming Holy Lance thanks to her pendant being OP as hell.

    I'm surprised you didn't include Kimahri from FFX on the list. I've found a way to make him pretty in the second part of the main story (post-game he is still not good with Lulu and later Auron). Basically with the standard sphere grid, you go to the Wakka road, and when you find the LV2 sphere lock you wait and still level up him until the forest of Malacalamia. After the elemental boss, you unlock the lv2 sphere and he has access to all the powerful black magic spells of Lulu grid. If you accumulate enough exp, he can even have access to Flare and later the tech to use 2 spells in one turn. Furthermore, the big majority of his overdrive is magic base. Finally, he can share his powerful black magic to Yuna who has a better magic stat than Lulu.

    Im very confused why Sharla is here ? Im currently playing Xenoblade for the first time im at lvl59 and i can tell u from experience, everytime i tryed to drop her i died over and over again, none of the other characters can heal besides shulk and riki and they heal like 1000 at best which is garbage late game

    • @Zeik56
      @Zeik56 Před 3 měsíci +2

      Riki can actually be one of the best healers in the game if you build him properly, and if you play right you can clear most content with no healer at all. Shulk, Dunban, and "Seven" was my go to team late game my first time.
      That being said, Sharla gets way more flak than she deserves. She's fine. She does her job, even if her job is redundant in optimized teams, and there's pretty much nothing you can't clear with her on the team. I wish her special skill was more interesting, but some people don't realize not every gamer is the type to min/max and optimize. It's good to have a dedicated healer for people that prefer that playstyle.

    • @Raizhen010
      @Raizhen010 Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah Sharla gets heat for having the lowest DPS and her talent art is awful. But she's perfectly fine as a party member. Can even do good damage too with thunder setups. Just because someone is the worst party member in the game, doesn't mean they're bad. She's still very good.

    Cielo isn't good in DDS1 but in DDS2 he's a better choice he stays in your party the longest and the enemies in the game RARELY have status ailment moves a by the time they do pop up you have Null ailment available for him i use him as my main healer in DDS2 since Argilla leaves first

  • @GWFanSoftcoreBrony
    @GWFanSoftcoreBrony Před 3 měsíci

    Really? Gobi and not Mogu? At least Gobi is a part of Karn's ultimate transformation. Mogu on the other hand is just a bad party member, boasting an average attack stat and below average stats everywhere else, he's the last party member that joins so you have no reason to have him in your active party, and he's only good for digging for some technically useful items and a mandatory plot progression. And his only skill in battle is Dig which makes the party run away.

  • @TheRavenShadowsWolf

    I couldn't even get past the first boss in Lost Odessy. One fucking level took 1 k exp; at the rate of 1 exp per battle. I don't care how "realistic" you want to make your damned game - NO ONE is going to sit there to grind that hard just to reach level freaking 2. : / Never mind 10 and beyond. I quit after I figured out it would take me that long just to get my second level. He might be immortal, but I'm not. (At least as far as I know...)

    Not even an honorable mention for like half the cast of Chrono Cross?
    Also, do people really think Aerith is a bad party member? Literally her first limit break trivialized the first half of the game for me and there's little penalty in using her since non-active party members get experience in that game

  • @PierFlies
    @PierFlies Před 3 měsíci

    The original version of FFXII, there was no reason to use anyone other than the 3 with the best stats. Everyone could do any job and use any equipment, but the base stats were objectively better on 3 of them. I really disliked that aspect of the game, I didn't play the international version yet that uses a different system.

    • @trymv1578

      Similar issue in FFX that the best three characters are the ones that swim, because everyone can do anything but only those three can do the underwater superbosses.

    • @PierFlies
      @PierFlies Před 3 měsíci

      @@trymv1578 Na because each character has a unique overdrive ability and equipment. The underwater battles are all weak enemies, neither superboss nor the dark aeons of the international addition. Only 3 areas like that, anima's aeon which is an easy fight, the underwater area in zanarkand which is easy, and the undewater bevelle area where you fight the worm again. You can easily grind if you need to in each of these areas and overcome the boss within 20 minutes.
