    FYI, I was able to get this to work without compressor out or DaVinci Resolve 19 by setting the DolbyVision profile to 8.4. Seemed to work with PQ or HLG, depending on your monitoring scenario. Thanks for the video Max!

    Max, don't want to consume your time, but using your workflow for Apple devices, Dolby Vision 8.4 through Compressor, doesn't upload on CZcams as HDR. How the heck are you doing it? This video of yours looks great, the highlights of the lighting in your room, etc. Anyway, the only thing that seems to work for me is H265 out of Davinci Resolve using HDR 10+ tone mapping. It doesn't look as good, as bright in the highlights as Dolby Vision. Anyway, if you have any other incites, let me know. Thanks,

      That's Instagram, not Compressor

    Just watched the video and I should say, other than the technical side of grading HDR is totally inaccurate, one thing you do REALLY good here is the use of Compressor to send the HDR and DoVi metadata to a format Instagram recognize as HDR with the proper tone mapping, which somehow, isn’t something that works even with files coming straight from Davinci Resolve. I actually went through that whole process a few months ago also trying to figure out how to get it to work.
    For people reading, to properly grade HDR, you will want a dedicated HDR reference monitor WITH an IO box like the Blackmagic Decklink or Ultrastudio. Without it, there is absolutely no way for you to preview HDR content inside of Davinci Resolve properly. The Macbook Pro XDR display is NOT a reference monitor and you will run in issues at one point such as gamma shift or saturation issues. Another issue that will happen here is the decent HDR monitors suitable for HDR grading unfortunately are still insanely expensive. The cheapest option would be run a LG C2 TV and calibrate it using Calman Ultimate and a Xrite i1 Plus. And even this is pretty expensive and still not 100% ideal.
    That being said, good job on the video overall! 💪🏼

    • @MaxRovensky
      @MaxRovensky  Před rokem +2

      Well, like I said, I'm not a professional colorist 😂
      The good thing about MacBook Pro's 1000nit mode is it will show you exactly what the video would look like on an iPhone that's going to ultimately watch it (you can stretch the meaning of the word "reference" here haha) For someone who just wants to make vibrant reels for IG it's plenty sufficient IMO, I would not recommend people get a $30k reference monitor for that 😅
      Thanks for watching 😌🙌🏻

      @@MaxRovensky I have the LG C2 and a Blackmagic video assist HDR. And what you explained in the video is very correct. In fact, you will never be able to see the highlights on the LG C2 as you can on an iPhone, precisely because of the lack of brightness (nits) on this TV. the LG C2 is only a good cheap option for color reference, if calibrated correctly. The way he explained it, enabling the HDR preview and watching it on the MacBook as a reference, will have exactly the same image that people will see madly on their respective iPhones. Thank you very much for the tutorial, this is the kind of people we need here, not the “wizards” who hide everything!

    Hi! I tried doing something similar with Final Cut -- I recorded by footage on the iPhone 13 Pro Max in 4k 60fp HDR. Tried uploading some of these HDR clips without any modifications or edits whatsoever as standalone clips. They showed up as HDR for a hot second, but quickly went back to being in SDR after I refresh my feed after upload. They also don't show up as HDR when I view my test account's reels from my main account.
    I checked the clips and confirmed that they were HEVC files in 4K, 60FPS, using the BT.2020 HLG color space with Dolby Vision support, and had a bitrate of 50mbps.
    I also tried sending some clips with the same stats to my MacBook, put them together in Final Cut Pro, and used Compressor to export them as HEVC 4k 50FPS bt.2020 HLG Dolby vision files with bitrates of 50mbps.
    They simply don't show up as HDR on IG at all, even after a few hours of waiting for any back-end processing to take place on IG's server. I can def view these clips in HDR on my MacBook and my iPhone.
    any idea why this might be the case? I also confirmed my account has the "high quality uploads" enabled, and made sure not to apply any edits within the IG app, and used a high speed internet connection.

      Instagram has a lot of ways for determining what video asset to show you. When you upload something, it generates like 3-5 different versions and you get one based on factors like are you in low power mode, do you have sufficient network speed, etc
      I've uploaded a number of reels in HDR and some of them took a few hours to show up, some randomly stopped being HDR for a day and then went back the next day, it's just how the platform works.
      If you upload it in HDR and person viewing it is deemed by Instagram to be "worthy" of seeing it in HDR - they will

    • @javajack-1
      @javajack-1 Před 11 měsíci

      I’m been having the same issue uploading HDR to Instagram. Mine are HDR when I post and I get a banner upper left that says HDR, but when I come back later they are back to being SDR. I changed my account to creator and also use a test side account. One thing I’ve read is that Instagram is testing HDR and only making it available to influencers with 10k followers. I don’t know if this is true but this could be part of the problem.

    Hello. I am on Windows for various reasons.
    I keep making render HLG and results on IG just oversaturated video. Same file is ok on the Android phone and CZcams. I tried 10bit 420 422 444. App recognizes only 420. I try to enable Dolby Vision on the time line. Nothing changes.
    I wonder what is so special about iPhone HLG compared to normal HLG. What else can be enabled for Intagram to correctly process files. Maybe it is not possible to upload HLG from Android at all?

    • @MaxRovensky
      @MaxRovensky  Před rokem

      I'm really not sure how to do this on Windows because Compressor does the metadata magic needed for Instagram to treat the file properly. Every export setting I've tried straight from DaVinci resulted in it being displayed wrong in some way
