Isn’t that the great thing about gravel riding, it takes you places you’ve never been to, can't drive and are unlikely to walk 😀
That's pretty neat you get to explore your old stomping grounds in a new way. Pretty area too.
Although it is my local area, it somewhere I’ve never been.

@@jollygoodvelo I thought those were drone shots and then was surprised that you could use a drone so close to a military base. I live near one in the US, and I don't think it would be allowed here.
Yeah, the world of ‘gravel’ riding seems more and more attractive - especially if there are areas like that to be explored. And I laughed @11:59 because even before you said it, i thought ‘escaped prisoner”! Fantastic drone shots here btw!! Thanks 🙏
I was based at Arborfield and Bordon in the late 80’s and spent a lot of time at Longmoor and the surrounding areas. Your video brought back some great memories.

Today I mixed it up by changing my route like you did, I took a local ferry and followed the shoreline.
Only past 5 or 6 people, 26 miles in the bank of fitness 🤣.

Great stuff. Kinda reminds me when I was stationed in Germany. Most of my leave I would spend cycling the area near to the base and neighboring towns. Keep pedaling my friend. Stay safe.
Great video! As someone who lives and rides in southern Arizona, I’ve seen my share of cattle guards. I must say the one in your video takes the cake. I’ve never seen one with spacing like that. I’d walk the bike over it too!
Excellent video. You mentioned the old railway track in connection with a film. Another film to use this setting was Hitchcock's wonderful "The Lady Vanishes" of 1938, I assume the episode where the train is diverted away from the main line.

Hi Leonard, I live in grayshott and the perimeter track around the longmore ranges forms part of my regular circular gravel ride. FYI The perimeter track is exactly 10 km, not including the extension to Liss. 👍

I think artist David Shepherd wanted to buy the disused Longmoor railway line but for some reason they would not sell it to him. Nice to see it has been turned into a gravel pathway.
I am 73, the alleys, road in my bike laps have been chi p sealed, therefore surfaced with loose gravel. What I find somewhat challenging is riding downhills and making turns. I do not do sharp turn. Still ride on whenever I can.
I broke my elbow two years ago by underestimating some gravel at a turn at the bottom of a hill. It was the real fine stuff that gets washed downhill after a heavy rain.
On the military theme Salisbury Plain would be an interesting gravel ride.
It would but I’m not sure it’s open to the public???
@@jollygoodvelo I think weekends it is, and when there is no exercise going on. Some areas are out of bounds.
Great video Leonard! Thanks for sharing your stories, it is a lovely personal touch. I worked on the phone lines to the Longmoor camp and the ranges once or twice, years ago, and the guys working at the ranges showed me one of the targets - It looked like a torso sized cheese grater! Very nasty! - Take care out there!

We all die twice; first one The Grim Reaper’s visit and second one when no one remembers us anymore. That’s why memory lanes are important.. to keep earlier generations a bit longer ”living”.

I wasn't SURE if they were drone shots until I saw the shadow at about 12:30, well done. Good addition to your "stable". You may have been using the drone longer than I've seen though. Good work😁

I totally believe you Leonard. I grew up living on Range Green, Tipner and as the name implies it was the last Navy housing before the Naval firing range. We regularly heard machine gun fire. My Dad who was a CPO in the Navy at the time said that they were “doing Bren gun practice”.

I saw the title and thought it MUST've been Longmoor. I live in Australia now but I used to use it as a long tempo run route. The circular route is around 10K, if I recall correctly. I'm back at Christmas and this has reminded me to head back there...not sure I could run a whole loop of it these days!

brilliant ride down memory lane Leonard....those tracks up by Longmoor are nice and you can link up with the trails through Alice Holt for an even longer off road and away from the cars for a chilled ride - I really liked the camera work on this vlog but be careful flying drones around the ranges ;)

Soo many thoughts on this, I found a bullet once tho it wasn't on a nice track it was outside a pub, Merseyside was quite bad tho they've put a lot of people inside thankfully, theirs a couple of old railway lines close'ish to me and in the coast a military firing range and once walked past on the beach and signs where up indicating live firing...
I rather liked Liverpool when I’ve been there.

Have you got the stock saddle on your gravel bike? If so how do you find it? I’m looking at getting one of these bikes.
It’s the stock saddle and it’s very comfortable. I haven’t had any problems with it.
I use google earth to look for new rides too.

Memory lane is almost always a little melancholy, at least for me.
And, for further proof we are two people separated by a common language, what you call a "cattle grid," we in Texas call a "cattle guard." Not that anyone asked.

Note to all Americans:
There is an historical reason for driving on the left; it’s all to do with keeping your sword hand free!
In the Middle Ages, you never knew who you were going to meet when travelling on horseback. Most people are right-handed, so if a stranger passed by on the right of you, your right hand would be free to use your sword if required.
…and to protect your lady wife? 😬

It one does not 'always' drive on the left, in a Country that mandates that your likely to die or kill someone else.
BTW not all the world drives on the Right. Japan with a population of about 180m, is a good example.
