  • Someone broke into the house that Andre's stepfather grew up in the mountain community of Duval. No one's living in the house now. The old aunty told us the story of the break-in, speaking in Haitian Creole. This house was later damaged in the January 12, 2010 earthquake in which 250,000 Haitians died.
    Check out the video from March 2010, just two months after the earthquake, where the old aunty and her husband talk to us about the earthquake, how it leveled their stone home and killed 11 people in the gully below where the residents of Duval go to collect water, wash and bathe.

    @alishaj90 You have several options
    1. Befriend someone who speaks the language and urge them to teach you.
    2. Volunteer for an NGO in Haiti (best way to learn).
    3. Some schools offer cheap night classes (especially in south FL)
    4. Buy a haitian creole/english dictionary and books... and listen to haitian radio stations from Haiti (some have online streaming. A quick google search will land quite a few)
    If you already know french, you'll pick it up in no time.

    @foredimples529 - Thanks for the compliment. I'll tell her you said that. They live in Duval village, only about 12 miles (and 2-12 hours travel time) from Port-au-Prince. Everyone in the village lost their homes in the earthquake. This old house here did better than most of the stone houses. After the quake, they made little shelters from the corrugated tin from their roofs. None of the relief organizations are helping Duval. We'd like to help, but how to get materials to the mountains?

    @loudenanuma Mwen pa pale Kreyol byen. Marim Ayitien. Mwen vle aprend pi Kreyol ak li e nan Ayita. I don't speak much Haitian Creole yet, but I'm determined to learn. My husband is from Duval, the tiny mountain village where this aunty is speaking. Most of them, including her, lost their stone houses in the earthquake. Luckily, their houses were 1-story with corrugated tin roofs, so not many died. Now they made shelters from the tin roofs, but they all need new houses and aren't getting help.

    Just, because some Haitians love to Anglicize or mixed English with Haitian Creole. That doesn't mean that is mixed with English nor any other language. It is simply French that has is broken-down.

      ChelseaMaya Why the Haitian language is called creole?

    • @ChelseaMayaVideos
      @ChelseaMayaVideos  Před 5 lety +1

      There are many kinds of creole languages, which simply means a mixture of different languages. Haitian Creole, the most widely spoken creole language, is a mostly a mix of French and an African tongue (from the area which is now called Benin), with some Spanish and English mixed in. "Unlike a pidgin, a simplified form that develops as a means of communication between two or more groups, a creole language is a complete language, used in a community and acquired by children as their native language."
