- League of Legends used to have a number of other game modes on offer instead of being seasonal, or on rotation. One of the oldest that released alongside the launch of League of Legends was the Twisted Treeline.
This 3v3 map was a starting point for many players looking for something different to Summoner's Rift, but these days, it's no longer available.
Today we check out the history of the Twisted Treeline, and see why this game mode is now a thing of the past.

I remember playing Twisted Treeline casually with two friends (we were silver/gold back then) and we suddenly faced a group of three who all were Challengers, specifically in Twisted Treeline. We had a lot of fun and friendly chat with them throughout our game. That gamemode truly was a lot more chill
I once had a twisted treeline match where first blood was at minute 90.

I still vividly remember that twisted treeline was my first game that i ever played in league of legends. I remember thinking that i could sneak through the jungle and get up to the turret to hit it without being seen only to find out what happens when you try to do that. 10/10 experience, i miss the old visuals.
It sounds crazy, but the removal of TT was one of the final nails in the coffin that led me to quit the game entirely. I still occasionally wanted to play a PvP mode that was much faster and way less stress than 5v5, but still be able to choose champs / comps unlike ARAM. The game had been long moving away from modes and champions that were fun because of their uniqueness, to everything being hyper standardized, and with the game being far less fun due to that _plus_ them constantly removing content / rotating content in and out causing even more fun game modes to not be available, I just got exhausted.
I genuinely wish there was a "classic" server for LoL, I would legitimately pay monthly to play it.
a year later they have completely redone their model with new modes like arena and swarm maybe one day twisted treeline or something like it could make its way back
Honestly. A classic mode would be great, with the old visuals and a reduced champion pool. Plus the old game modes like 3v3 and Dominion (yes, I actually enjoyed Dominion) would be awesome.
However, I don’t see it ever happening unless the game is on its dying breath and loads of players are demanding it. To them, it would diminish the value of the work they’ve done over the last ten or so years.
But look at RuneScape. They were eventually humble enough to release an old version of the game, and then iterated on it with the lessons they learned in mind, now the game is better than it’s ever been.

The main reason why I quit the game...they deleted 3vs3
One thing a friend of mine brought up, and I think it is a major element to why the game mode ultimately was closed down simply comes down to the upkeep and the conflicts with more modern champions not functioning without additional development effort on those maps. I remember specifically when Qiyana was added to the game, she initially couldn't get the water element from anywhere on the map, and her ult had a lot of really weird pathing issues with the walls of the map, and I think its fair to assume that when they push for more unique mechanics in the game that interact with the environment or influence elements of the gameplay outside of just champion to champion interactions, Twisted treeline could cause a lot of headache and annoyance to keep it functioning properly.
With all that said though, I still don't know if getting rid of it was the right choice. I honestly wish that League would lean more into just throwing maps like that into the custom game section and allowing players to make their own fun, understanding that it is an outdated product and it isn't going to have full support. Hell, they could even just open up some kind of expanded custom game project that allows people to make their own rulesets, or tweak item, champion or ability values, position different elements of the map or add/remove things. Even if more modern champions don't work on the maps, if you provide people the tools to make their own fun and regulate it like the Starcraft 2/Warcraft 3 Arcades, I'm sure people would still have alot of fun with minimal oversight required.

Lots of fond memories there. Especially the absolute chaos that was Hexakill on Twisted Treeline. Maybe one day.
I played LoL when it was just an open beta and didn't fall in love with the game until the first time I play Twisted Tree Line. It was such a low blow when they took it out of the game.
I had 2 dedicated buddies who would jump on league 2-3 times a week. So twisted tree line was perfect for us.

I remember me and two friends, 5:30 AM in my house. Going crazy and yelling because we made it to gold in 3 vs 3 and we were about to get the season free skin!
My parents were not fond of the yelling lmao. But they made a pass on that one because they clearly saw how happy we were.
Loved Twisted Treeline!
Met some longtime friends while playing on that map and continued to play all the way to the end.
I wish I could play it and Dominion one more time..
Awesome vid. I remember when they first released twisted treeline. It was so fun and fresh. Luckily I wasn't playing much when it got stale and fell into the mandatory meta.

Great Vid Wille! Brought up a lot of fun memories I had playing Twisted Treeline with two friends I made in college that moved back to South America where we continued to play
That era with the old harrowing map from 2012 and dominion.... it's as if it wasn't lived on this planet we're on today..those were times man I'm just happy I lived it
I remember in the early days of league when I was first starting out, I used to play league of legends with friends during lunch break for work, and the best mode for us was in fact Twisted Treeline just because it could be done around 15 to 20 minutes. Many a day was had where we could just enjoy a game of this a day and have fun.
I also remember all the old layout and aesthetics and music, and there is something legitimately pleasing about it that goes beyond just simple nostalgia, a kind of charm that I just can't get on the market nowadays. Hell if they made it a map skin they sold in the shop for like $20, I would pay for it at the drop of a hat.
as a diamond TT veteran i really miss this map. but the original, not the remake.
I remember playing this mode almost exclusively when I first started playing League, just before they removed it. I stopped playing for ages after they did.

My most fond memories of LoL are on the twisted treeline and Aram.. TT was a really quirky and fun map. A good break from the 5s meta. Was a real sad day when they retired it =(.
This gamemode was so fun, i remember singed being a menace. Made me super excited for the rumored magma chamber map that never got released.
When my friends and I started playing we mostly played Twisted Treeline. Even after it was changed with a way smaller jungle we still kept at it.
At some point we stopped playing and when I came back to play League in 2022 I was so sad to see it was no longer there...

AP Shaco jungle main here. I miss TT so much. I luckily stopped playing shortly before funneling became the meta.
Geez I am so old, that even most of the shots of twisted treeline specific stuff or champions featured I remember and consider as "new" addition. Fiora or Le Blanc for example but even Lee Sin and Vayne I watched and read admission to the Institute of war articles.
must say the old version having way more jungle is just what the new version needed to be better

What's crazy to me is that there was a big issue in the game where if you were in the enemy jungle near the second tower, the tower would start shooting you while you're in the jungle. That never got patched out, but Riot wondered why player count dropped. It's literally like dominion. They released it and then did nothing with it. It really didn't have to be this way

I started playing the week 3v3 and Kennen released. It really was a unique beautiful experience. I miss it.

I genuinely hope they bring back that beauty of a map. Its way more fun to play sometimes than regular summoners rift or aram. And when you play as 3 people, playing arena always has some team switching which doesnt really feel fun over time either. Twisted Treeline shouldve gotten more love to begin with, as was evident by its initial success. The map rework seems to have killed it by reducing old player's interest and therefore making it the dead game mode it became through further neglegance on riots part.
Sad still that its gone, but crying about it now is most likely even more of a waste of time than it was 5 years ago. Rest in peace TwTl

Everytime this topic comes up, I need to share the fact that I still wear my Dominion icon as a badge of honor
Poppy (both pre and post rework) was insane on this map, always picked her to jungle on this map.
Man I remember I tried out the old urgot before his rework releases to see how the old one plays and then the new one in Twisted treeline, it was fun.
Twisted Treeline was the fun map to play on when you didnt want a serious game, felt like it was the ARAM before ARAM

Great video! I remember when they removed Dominion, they mentioned they were NOT removing Twisted Treeline, what a bunch of..... ****** It really pisses me off. I loved to play on this alternative maps to get out of the misery of soloq
They really should bring twisted treeline back as well as more new maps with different themes.

I feel like it would do much better in modern times due to the constant want of an alternative faster summoners rift game mode, things like hextech gates can definitely make game pace go faster too

I absolutely adored the Twisted Treeline when I strated. I always played with 2 friends who made me discover the game and since I couldn't play long sessions it was the perfect gamemode for me.
I leveled up to lv30 only by playing this mode (back when the level was capped at 30) and I always had fun.
When I learned they were gonna remove the gamemode, I played a sh*t ton of it just to stack up memories of a now forgotten jewel.
I really really hope that Riot will put the game back with more balancing and more care put into it. The downfall of 3v3 was their own fault.

I wasnt here for the old twisted treeline because I start the game when Zac was realeased and it was the new version of TTL, I did practice alot in this game mode mostly with riven at the time because it was more forgiving comparate to SR. I liked so much this mode with less peoples in a game but the thing was there was so many BOTS that It would ruin the experience, there so many games that I did in this game mode completely alone LMAO, my team was BOTS(AI I mean) and enemy as well, but you did explain that the game mode wasnt popular anymore so I understand more now. But damn I liked so much the atmosphere of this game mode, darker and more horror side was so obviously different than SR at the time, but after the LAST REVAMP OF SR, the game mode completely died and I was quite shocked of the news but I was expecting it of course. With playing so many game alone in this mode. So I understand their descision to retire the map from the game it was useless to have it, but damn I liked it way more than this 2v2v2v2 RNG mode that not really need good skill but good RNG LMAO what a joke, its not that I dislike this mode but it dosent feel league at all, you dont need insane skill just pick a broken champ and hope for good RNG that all, quite trash for skill show tbh. Honestly the problem with league is that It dosent need anymore more champs, there already a freaking bunch of them already waiting for you to play, IT NEED NEWS GAMES MODES THAT RESSEMBLE LEAGUE BUT ITS NOT SR !!! And they have plenty of ressourses to do it, I guess that they dont do it is because it dosent make more money than a new champ release, but we need to admit all the champ nowaday look exactly like older champ but in a different skin that all, but it dosent help for the community and behavior of the game, look at viego, broken ass champ with too many untargeatable and invicible Iframe that it make the game so much more frustrating, and there plenty of other like this new naafiri is completely a joke, she literally can one shot you with her dogs without any counter play from you, what interesting in this thing, its only frustrating that all !!!
Anyway nice video brother you deserve my sub just for that, I just wanted to say my opinion about all that, because being realistic league is a business and if it dosent worth the time, its going to trash remember, so dont be a zombie and do what you want to do even if you dont want to play this game, that my advice, just enjoy what fun for you.

Old Twisted Treeline was really great, the spooky soundtrack, the atmosphere, different meta. After the change and introduction of the altairs mechanics etc it was kinda weird and i didn't like it that much. However, I think they coulde've preserved this game mode tho. I knew players who were playing ONLY 3v3
so sad most of the 3v3 Challengers and people who mained the mode stopped playing entirely
reaaaaally missing this mode these days, hoping the 2v2v2v2 mode scratches a similar itch, even if it's unfortunately very temporary.
best game mode, played the original 3v3 map for years when i started in middle school
the only game mode i cared about, some of my friends still play but we all miss this game mode, we choose smite for this reason

I definitely had the most fun playing twisted treeline more than any other game mode. Even with support meta existing, jungle meta was still very much viable. I wish there was a way it could still be a custom game mode. Oh well, good times.

The truth is that Riot did not want another gamemode visible in the client because it would otherwise implode.
The shrines ruined the meta for our group
At this year's MSI, Yuumi was banned from the tournament. I've never heard of anything like this in another sport, where the rules were altered not to protect players or the competitive integrity of the game, but explicitly to make it more entertaining for viewers. Designing games that are fun to watch could be just as, if not more, important than designing them to be fun to play in the modern era, but I don't hear anyone talking about this.
I think there is a lot that could be said on the topics of competition versus entertainment in pro play, for League or other eSports. But a video about people hating Yuumi might get more clicks. 😂

I'm still bitter about the fact that they pretty much wrote "we tried everything we could to save 3v3" while doing absolutely nothing for years and letting degenerate strategies be top tier for month and month
Meta wise it was such an easy fix, all the gamemode needed was a bit of time
They clearly wanted to remove the gamemode for whatever reason (probably money, let's be honest) and starved it of content to use the "nobody plays it anyway" argument
