    The 8:00 mark literally just changed the game. Ive never ever in my life been able to play any more than 16th notes at 140bpm to 16th notes at 170 bpm in less than 10 minutes. Literally insane. You’re my hero. 30 mins ago I was stressed out for studio work in February. I’m going to laughing by that time, now that I’ve got this technique and exercise in my book. You’re awesome.

    Of all the youtube videos I have been watching, you helped me finally...Tried heel-toe and was stuck at 180-190bpm with unequal beats...Tried swivel till 220bpm easily, but hurt my knees...I was trying ankle for a long time, but I could play only above 190bpm and not slower...After watching your videos, things changed like miracle...God bless you and I declare that you are the greatest metal teacher...Believe me, I know.

    Good seeing this channel grow.
    In these crazy strange times, it's good to see drum masters like Marthyn shine more and more. Good job with the work you put in, the intelligence and the dedication.
    But I will tell you.
    My secret to improving speed is constantly being chased by my 2 year old son Orion.
    Whew the workout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Calves and hip flexors are guaranteed sore for at least 2 days.

    Hey Marthyn, I just wanted to take a second to say thank you for this. Even after working through the bass drum mastery course twice I still struggled to master the transition from more relaxed single strokes into contracting the quadriceps and stabilizing my legs while I accelerated into faster speeds. With a combination of your courses, working through stick control with my hands and feet, and long slow endurance runs with heels down I have been able to achieve speeds of 240-250. When I purchased your course at the beginning of the year I could not achieve anything above 200. Getting comfortable and consistent with transitioning to faster tempo‘s and learning how to control my body at those speeds is the final piece in my progression to extreme tempos. I tried this exercise today and I think it is the missing link. Thank you so much for all you do for the metal drumming community, and for your tireless work to help your students. Obviously it requires an absolutely profound amount of work on our end, but proper guidance shaves years off of that process. Looking forward to much more growth and content. Cheers from Texas!

    Partly because I used the old DW5000's which are heavy by today's standards.

    I love how you explained that anything above 220 you need to use triggers. I was wondering that. Almost every drummer I’ve seen playing that fast, you can tell the drums are triggered. Especially when their legs and feet are barely moving but they’re getting this huge clicky sound out of their drums!

    • @nickcrane8329
      @nickcrane8329 Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah unfortunately once you get above a certain speed it's impossible to get a usable kick sound without triggers. You have to use more conservative movements at those speeds so it's only natural that the velocity will be a bit weaker as a result.

    • @Nefville
      @Nefville Před 3 lety +6

      Slow it down and see what you're doing. If you're doing just the ankle technique start slow to isolate the calf muscle. Thats all you want to use. Go as slow as you have to so you only use the calf muscles then speed up until you notice you're using other muscles and slow down to get below that. If you work at those lower tempos you will gain muscle and better control and then be able to speed up from there.

    • @jp1041041
      @jp1041041 Před 3 lety +3

      I had this problem too. To fix it, I lowered my stool so my knees were at the same height as my hip joints and moved my stool back to ensure my knees were behind my ankles. This forces your calf muscles to work for the strokes and prevents your upper leg and shins from trying to do the stroke. Don't recommend a low stool height forever as you might get a sore lower back.

    • @matenorth
      @matenorth Před 3 lety +7

      There is a thing in gym workout called mind to muscle connection. It happens with time and imagination to trick your body to activate/deactivate targeted muscles. Try to imagine that the pedal is behind your foot instead of right under it and use your heels to generate the stroke.

      maybe up your spring tension or adjusting your batter head for better rebound (sometimes that means looser, sometimes tighter). You shouldn't be having to manually lift your feet back up, let the pedals and rebound should do the work
