- Howdy all!
You may (or may not) have noticed I've been absent from the channel lately.
The reason for this is not that I haven't been drumming but that I have had to really focus on learning this technique as creating covers really was taking up the majority of my practice time.
I always said this channel would include learning new techniques and becoming a better drummer and this is a big step towards that.
I hope this video gives you an insight into what happens behind the scenes.
Enjoy.
This is great a lot of beginners quit at this point. You can do it and almost everyone hits this exact stumbling block trying to learn ankle technique.
I’ve been playing double bass pretty much my whole life. Trying this technique made me feel like a failure.. I don’t want to hear about someone’s struggles, but I think it’s important that a video like this was put out. You are the first person to say hey, you know what? This takes time, and we can relate to what it’s like to struggle w/ this technique. I’ll buckle down and be patient, thank you so much for making this vid bro. You’ve helped a lot of people❤️
This is very encouraging. It’s very helpful to hear about the struggles and failures of learning new techniques because I am having many myself and there’s a strong temptation to give up and live at my current plateau.
I was so astonished as I watched your video and saw my own experience reflected in the exact same manner.
The hardest part about learning the ankle technique for me has been letting myself relax to the needed degree. It's counterintuitive. But it flows well when I relax my knees and hips, and think from my heel instead of front ankle/shin muscle. Most certainly an acquired and easy to underestimate technique- when done well it Looks like so little is being done.
This is the most Accurate amd Honest description of what it takes to learn the skill....
Is great how you shows us in such honest way your journey. I went for a similar path and If you allow me, to run fast most important thing is to know how run slow, slow with groove and power, that way your muscles will learn the motion with accuracy and will get strong to hit hard. Why would you want to go faster without groove and power??
This is great! I've had a double bass pedal for months and I'm just now realizing that my technique was wrong and inefficient. Learning the proper technique, I realized that I have a ton of work and muscle conditioning. Keep up the great work!
I stopped struggling so much to go past 220 when i moved my seat quite close, switch my feet up to the end of the pedal when going fast and switching back, adjusted seat height correctly, adjusting how i sit like kind of in the middle between the actual middle of the seat and the edge when going fast, adjust spring tension to max but keep beaters not too high, made the beater angle quite far back just before the point where it can hit you if you let it go to much, made sure there was enough leg room so i could swivel if i needed to, use quite light beaters.
here to compare results and can say I've been experiencing most of the same things so it's reassuring to know I'm on the right path. thank you
I am are basically at the same stage - able to make both feet quite ok, with nice single stokes - but next step (starting properly in a accurate beat) seems to be a entire journey that I sometimes feel discouraged for…
No boring at all I thought I was alone on this and you video helped me to reconsider my technique and work on it thanks so much 😊
The main issue is starting with your heel too high. it doesn't matter if the quads are isolated tension or moving with the ankle what matters is that with the heel up, your calf is in a half contracted state so you only have half the control of the section of the limb and half the ability to create the same springing force you would use from jumping when standing with the knees locked. Start from a fully stretched position with the heel closer to the ground. In this video you can see your progress is marked by how high your heel was when starting the beater swing. No, I'm not as good a drummer as the pros, but I am an expert in anatomy so hope this helps in the future.
I’m at those tough beginning stages right now after trying to learn for like 2 years on and off with no progress. Seeing your video makes me wanna dedicate the proper time to learning. Thanks man.
No, that wasn't boring at all, that was very helpfull! I'm at the point where i'm able achieve about 190 to 200 bpm with my left foot but my right pedal is so bouncy that it's very difficult to control. Guess i need more practice-time. And your video is pure motivation. Thanks a lot!
As a drummer and guitarist I must say that relying too much on double kick technique is not the only thing to focus
I think I understand the idea of ankle technique finally, thank you.
Nice one dude! Well done. Hard work pays off 💪🏽stick at it....
This video is amazing that is exactly my problem is what you did to example what you were doing wrong
Oh man, it's like I'm watching myself! The frustration with the unison hits, those momentary flashes of happiness when the hits randomly alternate and it sounds right, only to degenerate in unison again as the phase shifts! It's terrible!
