    I just found this singer 301A at yard sale for $20 and a lady who sold this to me said it was her grandmother and it was sit in the basement for years. Not a lot of people interesting to buy and she doesn't sew. I fall in love with it right away and found out how old it was was made me more happy and especially it still work great! Your video makes me more clear about how to use it and very impressed. Thank you!

      WOW!! $20.00 for a 301 in good shape is such a great find! I have a 301A like the one here in the video, two Featherweights, a 201, 66, 99, 15, and a 127. My favorite is the 301 BY FAR! The 301 and the 201 are close in performance to me. I really like the 201 because it is powerful and it runs so smoothly. The 301 is super smooth like that too. Obviously it's a way lighter machine but it sure is a great machine. I have the buttonhole attachment, zigzag attachment and the blind stitch attachment. I even like the 301 more than my two featherweights. They're just fantastic machines.

    I just got a 301 and was struggling to get it to sew. Well here I was threading the needle left to right. I should’ve known better really. I’ve been a longarm quilter for 32 years; started out on a Nustyle 228 but have had a Nolting 18 IS2K for 20 years. I’m so excited about my 301!!! Your videos are so helpful and informative. My parents bought me an LBOW 301 like this about 20 years ago at an auction and brought it to me when they came to visit. I remember my mom telling me that my home ec teacher was there and was also interested in it and that they bought it for $35. She also leaned this machine was coveted by quilters because of its beautiful stitch and portability. I soon learned what a great machine it was and bought a few accessories for it on eBay and communicated via email with sellers who told me more about it and what a great machine it is. This was before CZcams and Facebook groups of course. Anyway, it was my first slant needle and now nearly 20 years later I’ve added a 401 and 403, all great machines. My 301 means even more to me after my Mom passed as it was a gift from her. Dad doesn’t remember anything about the sale or history of the machine. Now that I know what I do, I wish I could have asked Mom more questions about its origins. About 10 years ago I lent it to a friend who is a quilter and had to work really hard to get it back. She wasn’t going to let me have it and I think she was hoping I’d forget about it because I was in the thick of raising my busy littles! Thanks Andy for all you do to inspire us VSM users. I still haven’t gotten the time to watch one of your overhaul and cleaning videos to do on my machines but it is on my list of things to do in the future. I did take the tension assembly off my 401 and cleaned the disks following your video and that made a big difference as it was very dirty.

      Wow, a $2,000 machine (today's dollars) for $35! Yes, most of the folks who bought my restored 301A machines are quilters. I do have a number of videos for the model and maybe you'll enjoy them later. The first one I came across was quite neglected but cleaned up so nicely and I was very impressed with it. @@andytubesewing1953 Thank you!!! I actually sew a lot and I make costumes all the time. I have a computerized brother machine but I hate that it's all plastic and it's slow even at its highest speed. I am so excited to use it to sew long rolled hems super efficiently. The machine is actually in great shape besides the hand wheel. It somehow is cracked eventhough it is metal and it's bend in a way that it can not make the full rotation as it gets stuck on the body of the machine. I'll have to replace the part or take it off and try to repaired it. Otherwise it looks ready to use.

      @andytubesewing1953  Před 2 lety +2

      @@YamiHikariHime I saw your YT home page and figured you'd be sewing costumes. It's a great machine for that and very fast. It has been tested at 1500 stitches per minute! Bent/broken handwheels usually are a result of a dropped machine, so I hope it is just the handwheel that took the hit and not the motor shaft or main arm shaft that was damaged. You can just pull the handwheel off and then run the motor to see how it works and turn the arm shaft with your fingers to see if it is smooth. Beige-colored handwheels are available from eBay and here is an example of one from a seller I have used before: www.ebay.com/itm/154050848134 It's a good price too. There are other sellers I am sure. Good Luck, and happy sewing.

    Can the 301 take upholstery thread ? I’ve only used the multipurpose and garment fabric. I would like to try stabilized cotton to make a wallet. Needs a stronger thread. I don’t want to ruin my treasure. Love my machine too much.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 2 lety

      Disclaimer: I do not sew. Your machine was made to sew with cotton and silk thread. Synthetic threads were not in use at the time. Model 301 uses 15x1 needles in sizes 9, 11, 14, 16, 18. A thread that will fit through the eye on those needles can be used. Maybe a top-stitch needle or leather needle if sewing leather wallets. A good fabric/thread store can advise you. Users have told me cotton threads crate more lint so be sure to brush the tension unit area off regularly. The model 301 instruction manual has a nice chart of fabric/needle/thread sizes on the last page. A free to download copy of the manual is available from Singer if needed at this link:
      www.singer.com/search/support?title=301 Buyers of my 301A restorations have used them for making camping/hunting/hiking items using very heavy fabric/thread for sewing duck cloth, canvas. garment leather, ballistic nylon. etc.
      When using a very heavy thread a couple buyers told me they had to reset the tension unit to handle the thick threads. They used some of my "Coco" videos to Zero Out the tension unit and set the stroke of the takeup spring and the tension of it. You can find the tension videos in the Coco Playlist here: czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLZyGebzS_oISgesXNyREyI.html

    I know this video was made several years ago. Appreciate your attention to detail, but could you please tell me what might be causing my fabric to have a slight pucker ? Using quality fabric and thread.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 3 lety

      It's usually due to too much tension on the thread. That causes the thread to stretch a little, then after the stitch is made the thread "relaxes" back, pulling the fabric and forming the pucker. Use less tension, even a lot less. You can always increase it if you turn it too low. You need a balanced tension between needle and bobbin tension. (upper & Lower)

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 4 lety

      Well here is my best answer. I do not sew, so I look at the machines from a mechanical and performance point of view. How they work and how they are maintained and how long they will live. I favor the 404. However, 😉 my wife, who has sewn for 50+ years told me you should just get the 301. Period. It is the machine you want as a new sewist. You can mount in a cabinet or grab the handle and go portable. It is plenty strong enough unless you're going to be sewing leather shoes or something. It is easy to maintain (I have several videos about that) and with normal cleaning and lubrication should last for your kids/grandkids, never mind the 20 or 30 years, 50 at least! Here is a great website that can tell you all about the 301 www.singer301.com/about/default.html For those that complain the 301 (or 404) has no ZigZag stitch my wife says 90% of sewing is straight stitch and she has a 40-year-old serger for the rest. So there you go, a model 301A it is. Good Luck.

      Depends on the part. If not plastic or painted I soak in Krud Kutter Cleaner & degreaser and use a 20% to 100% solution depending. The KK can affect paint. If something is rusty and made of steel, like the rubber feet screws, I soak in The Must for Rust. I will also use alcohol for soaking, like the tension unit. Thanks for this. Just pulled my mother's old 301A out this week, and this was exactly what I needed to refresh my memory. Quick question: you don't normally sew without holding the fabric in both front and back, do you? I figured you were probably trying to hold the camera, but wanted viewers to realize that to make a straight seam you need to guide the fabric.

    • @andytubesewing1953

      I'm glad you will be putting the machine back in service; it has a beautiful stitch. If the machine needs any adjusting or cleaning I have a couple of playlists of videos about working on it: "Coco goes to the Spa" czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLZyGebzS_oISgesXNyREyI.html and "Remove Replace Adjust Parts on a Singer Model 301A": czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKI_6fbu3itbd1v4z3uQvvkO.html
      I don't normally sew, period. I'm just a mechanic. I think the sewist should hold the fabric whichever way they are the most comfortable to get the stitch they want. If fabric consistently pulls to one side or the other that may indicate the feed dog is out of alignment.
      Here is a quote from page 17 of the original Singer Instruction Manual for Model 301.
      "Most materials require only guiding for best sewing results. However, the miracle fabrics such as nylons, dacrons, orlons, blends with various rayons, puffed weaves, sheers, jerseys, and ticots, which, by their nature, require light pressure, also require support in the form of holding the material taut at the back and front of the needle as the needle enters the fabric. This support assures a smooth, even seam. Never pull the material when sewing. Anyone wanting a copy of the Instruction Manual can download a free copy of it from Singer at this link:
      www.singer.com/search/support?title=301
      This manual was revised in 1976. Maybe that's why they called them miracle fabrics?
      On fabrics like mentioned my wife tends to guide the fabric by resting hands on the left and right side of the needle. Again, I think whatever makes a person comfortable while sewing.
      I normally control the foot pedal by hand and use a tripod for the camera, but in this video, my wife was the cinematographer. Best wishes for happy sewing with your mother's machine, and thank you for watching my channel.

    Question for you.. I have 2 of these and on one of them the reverse knob moves up when I sew. Even though I screwed it into set the stitch it moves while sewing.It is loose it seems. Any suggestions? I also cleaned both of them the way you did in one of your videos. They came out great!!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 7 lety +1

      When the reverse knob "creeps" up when sewing it can be caused by a couple of things. That knob is called the Feed Regulator Screw Stud Thumb Nut, (whew!) The Feed Regulator Screw Stud goes right through the middle of the Thumb Nut and is attached to the Feed Regulator inside the Upright of the machine. If the Feed Regulator Screw Stud is not tight all the way into the Feed Regulator it will vibrate loose eventually. Turn The Thumb Nut to the left to back it way from the machine somewhat then insert a small screwdriver into the nut and tighten the screw stud. (If the screw stud ever falls out it is not a problem, just screw it back in) Try sewing after it is tightened to see if that fixed it.
      If that did not work, then the Feed Regulator Hinge Screw is loose. To access the hinge screw you must remove the handwheel. Below the handwheel area is a recessed area about 1.5 inches deep and you will see the head of the hinge screw. It is a big screw. Tighten that screw. If you over tighten it the feed regulator won't go up to reverse or down to sew forward, so tighten the screw and test if the feed regulator will go up and down ok or not. Play with it until it feels right. Maybe compare it to your other machine that works ok.
      You can go to my slide show @1:38 to see the Hinge Screw. Below the handwheel opening, above the electric plug and to the right of the black bobbin winder tire. See it there? about a half inch wide screw head?
      czcams.com/video/U05wT9ga_Vg/video.html

    Hello Andy, I have a quick question about my machine, is there supposed to be pedal ‘pressure’? Like, should it move slower if I push it less, and faster if I push it harder?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 3 lety +1

      Absolutely yes. Less pressure should be slower speed and more pressure should be faster speed. Just like a car's gas pedal. If your pedal is doing a "0 to 60" jump it is a sign it needs servicing or even replacement. If you have a vintage Singer machine I have a couple of playlists for restoring the most common pedals. Button-style pedal: czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71.html Clamshell-style pedal: czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi.html If you are not a do-it-yourself type you can replace the whole pedal as many new pedals are for sale online. What's your recommendation for tension for quilting cotton

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 4 lety

      Sue, it is really the machine and how it is working that determines that based on the fabric/thread/needle combination. I have several videos about setting up the tension assembly and how to zero it out. Normally SInger recommended the BOBBIN tension be set to 40 to 50 grams for the cotton thread. That was 60 years ago. If you use modern thread a bobbin tension of about 25 is good then sew and turn the upper tension until you get your good stitch. When you like the stitch you then push in the tension indicator dial and turn it to number 4. Then most of your stitching will be done on 4 with room to go lower or higher depending on your needs at the time. I tend to leave the bobbin tension alone and zero out the upper tension then adjust it b/c the upper is so easy to work on. I have videos for removing, replacing and setting the upper tension if you need them:czcams.com/video/c6usEx1vUKY/video.html
      czcams.com/video/VPzpLIAvz8Y/video.html This company has a nice video about tension, including bobbin case tension. He demonstrates it on a featherweight which has the same bobbin case and hook set up as the 301A singer-featherweight.com/blogs/schoolhouse/how-to-adjust-tension IMO, SInger gave us lots of flexibility in tension, The original tension units had no number indicator but was set to whatever the sewist decided was a good stitch. For me, it does not matter if the dial reads 3 or 4 or 8 as long as the stitch is pretty and flat. When my wife starts a project she test sews on scraps at whatever the tension is set at, and turns the tension dial higher or lower while watching the stitch, not the number dial. When the stitch looks good then that's where she leaves the setting, not even knowing or caring what the number is.

      I do not see a problem with using that needle. The Singer Instruction Manual for Model 301 (free at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=301) shows sizes 9 through 18 needles in the chart. A 15x1 size 10 (70/10) is in that range. I do not believe it matters whether it's a "microtex sharp" or a regular or a titanium coated or a gold-coated or an NIT (Nickel-Phosphor-PTFE) coated. It is the size that matters. When I'm trying an unfamiliar needle I install it without threading, remove the bobbin and turn the handwheel while looking, listening, and listening for a needle strike on the hook, just to be sure the is no contact before sewing a project. I appreciate your input. I did auto upholstery for a dozen years...but my industrial machine does not do zigzags nor does it do (or I don't have the experience) with the very delicate materials like my wife's clothes that occasionally need some alterations.
    Was thinking a better tool for that may be having a better outcome.
    Thoughts? 😇😎

      Well, the 301A is a straight stitch only, no ZZ. If you want/need ZZ then the 237 is your machine. If you don't need the ZZ, or rarely need the zigzag, I'd go for the 301A by far. If it is in a cabinet that means it is sitting in a cradle and can be lifted right out of the cabinet in 3 seconds and carried by a flip-up handle and becomes portable. You can get attachments for it to sew Zigzag czcams.com/video/zYtDIxH1tJ8/video.html you can get attachments to make buttonholes
      czcams.com/video/bVlDzfuiO6A/video.html here is a good website about the 301A www.singer301.com/index.html My wife uses the 301A and makes a clothing item at least once per week. She has a 50-year-old serger if needed.
      If you're going to use zigzag a lot then, again, the 237 has built-in zigzag and is a strong, versatile model. BTW, you can go to this link, enter a model number, and download a free copy of the original instruction manual of any model you are interested in. www.singer.com/support
      If you like videos, here are 20 videos about the 237 czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKzvgm_CYPFnDeM8ZqTTo1h.html and 19 about a 301A czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLZyGebzS_oISgesXNyREyI.html
      and 17 more videos for working on, adjusting and repair the 301A czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKI_6fbu3itbd1v4z3uQvvkO.html if whatever machine you buy has motor or foot pedal problems I have videos for that too czcams.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists?view_as=public

      @@andytubesewing1953 Thank you so much for such a quick information filled response! I do not have a serger....(yet?) Haha!
      I do not do enough sidework to justify the expense and my lovely wife is wondering why I'm looking for another sewing machine (when I have one already).
      I also purchased an older unit that is in a cabinet that has become a storage place in the basement cuz it needed a part to sew smoothly and I have not purchased the part quick enough cuz priority and money issues. 😞 So....(sew?😀) instead of disruption of basement organization stuff it was a thought of mine to purchase an already running unit.
      I liked the idea of the machine that flips into the table and can become furniture and it keeps the dust from being AS much as an issue on the machine itself...but experience also has shown that flat surfaces become shelves pretty quickly.
      Maybe I thought that the zig zag stitch could be used in place of a serger?
      My industrial machine does most what I have needed it to do. It would be nice to have a long arm machine..but those are pricey.
      The most challenging job I've done is replaced a suspended bow headliner with a fiberboard (think door panel material or the stuff that pegboard is made of (with no holes)) I had to stitch some of these pieces together to make a shape that contours the roof line which curves in both directions for headroom. This was in a mid 50's Chevy with ghost flames. Anyways....rabbit trail.... With a longer arm machine....there would be SOME ease to those types of tasks.
      We'll see if I am able to get either of these machines cuz as things go. Sometimes folks are quicker to the purchase than myself as I travel to my full time job as an x ray tech and the old job (auto upholstery) is a side gig...and it seems less sought after in these times where I live.
      Sorry for the long post. I appreciate your response again! 😇😎
      Have a happy Monday (and week!)
      😇😎

      @@mrupholsteryman Yes, many use the ZZ in lieu of a serger. Many also say if your sewing cabinet becomes a shelf you are not sewing enough! Good luck either way.

      @@andytubesewing1953 as it goes...the 301 escaped me. It sold while I was working my full time job. Haha!
      I do appreciate your expert advice! Any others you could steer me toward that are reliable? I also liked the idea of being truly portable and able to be lifted out. 😇😎
      Maybe do some mobile upholstery repairs as opposed to forcing folks to bring stuff to my home....?

      @@mrupholsteryman Most vintage Singer machines can sit in the opening of a Singer vintage cabinet if you want a large flat, even surface for your fabric while sewing. To close the cabinet up you can hang the machine from hinges and it stores inside the closed cabinet, or you can lift the machine off and put it under the cabinet or away in a closet or in the trunk of your car for that matter. The 301 was the ONLY model Singer ever made that mounted in a cradle to be folded down into the cabinet or lifted from the cradle to become portable without taking it off the hinges (the cradle used the hinges).
      It weighs about 17lbs.
      Other good straight stitch models that are all/mostly metal mechanics and body are the 404 with its heavy-duty build and a direct drive motor and all steel gears straight stitch only. Model 99K is an affordable 3/4 size black machine that is considered powerful with a metal driven hook but a belt-driven handwheel. Straight stitch only. The old Iron horse machines like the 15-91 and 201 have potted motor versions that are direct drive motors and considered some of the strongest running domestic Singers ever made. They are heavier but can sit/hang on/in cabinets, or remove 2 screws from the hinges and carry it away.
      The 237 you mentioned before is a unique machine made in Italy that has an interesting traveling hook and is thought to be the last all-metal machine Singer made. It's a favorite model too. Zigzag, or the just as strong straight stitch model 329.
      My personal favorite ZZ model is the 403A that has the same mechanics as the Slant-O-Matic 401A but fewer pattern stitches. A very strong machine direct-drive motor and all steel gears, again, set/hang on/in a cabinet or take portable.
      I knew a man that reupholstered furniture as a 2nd job for 30 years and used a 337 ZZ machine, cabinet, or portable with a motor belt. He said he never had a problem and put a new motor & timing belt on it about every 10 years and one new set of motor brushes in 30 years. Except for the 15-91 and 201, I have playlists of all these models, and more (500 videos) on my playlist page, mostly listed by model number, that you can browse through to get an idea of how they perform and how to maintain them. czcams.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists?view_as=public
      What to avoid is anything after about 1974 and anything plastic or with plastic gears. I have bought some of the mentioned models for as little as $25 off craigslist. Prices are up right now of course. I've never paid more than $100 for any machine. Some have just needed cleaning and adjusting, some a few parts or belt replaced. Good luck.

    What’s the difference between a 301 and 301A ?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 4 lety

      Production for the public sale of Model 301 started in 1952 in Andersen, South Carolina. (New Factory) Production runs in 1953 started to identify the Model as 301A to signify they were made in Andersen. and not Singer's Main Factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey. There was also a change to the badge. Later the motor plaque on the 301A was changed and the silver lube tubes on the motor were dropped. You can read all about the Singer Model 301/301A on this website www.singer301.com/index.html
      I came across it while doing research for my "Coco goes to the Spa" series.

    It’s a great little machine, I’m sewing leather purses with mine. Someone tightened the clutch screw so tight it’s frozen and I hate to force it loose so I remove the bobbin case when I wind.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Před 4 lety

      It does make a pretty topstitch. Singer actually gave the stitch a name, calling it "Stitch No. 301". I was told they did that because it is a rare form of stitch that looks that same on the top & the bottom; thus I imagine it is great for sewing purse seams and handles. There may be an easy way to loosen your stop motion nut (clutch screw). I'm restoring a model 403A and when I bought it the stop motion nut would not turn at all. It appears someone put the clutch washer on backward. Anyway, I show removing it at the beginning of this video, then reinstalling it at 0:54:26 later in the video: czcams.com/video/ghnNYyMC1xU/video.html I have found this a few times, and maybe this is what is going on with your machine. Either way, you are very smart to pull off the bobbin case while winding! BTW, I have 2 playlists with 30+ videos for repairing, cleaning, adjusting and oiling a 301A if you ever need more info about your 301A. czcams.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLZyGebzS_oISgesXNyREyI.html

      Thank for watching my channel. 6 years ago my 5 Y.O. granddaughter was visiting and wanted to use the new $59 camera she got for Christmas, so I let her record this video. I thought she did a good job considering her age and the camera. She was over for lunch today and I showed her your comment. She gets the points you made but is still rather proud of her first video. We decided to visit your CZcams Channel to see some examples of better video recordings, but wait... you have no videos! Not a single one? When I asked her what she thought about that she replied that there are people who DO things and share with others, and there are people who CAN"T, DON"T, or WON"T but will take time to be critical of others. You lost all credibility with her. She said your comment wasn't an honest critique, but just a snarky comment on a 6-year-old video. She said if you ever do make a video and post it on your channel let me know so we can see how you do. She's 11 now and I like her thinking.
