I hate to break a counterpoint here, but I really like Mystic Caves. It's more a conventional 2D platformer level sure, but it felt nice to feel challenged and I don't mind slowing down the pace after ten Acts of speed. Nothing close to as slow and draggy as Marbles or Spring Yard or Labyrinth can be IMO. And the visuals and music...really jive with me at least as much as any of Sonic 2's other options on the menu. Would have wanted to see this level appear in Sonic Mania, but instead we got Oil Ocean for late Sonic 2. Fine enough and probably made you happier :)
Sorry I grew up later and my sister still had the sega genesis and Sonic is just an icon for my childhood interms of hearing and seeing console music and gaming entirely other then crash bandicoot

SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 IS WAY BETTER BECAUSE I WAS BORN ON OCTOBER THE 23RD 1989, WHICH IS A YEAR AFTER SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 CAME OUT, WHICH WAS "OCTOBER 23,1988": INFINITE MOVIES.
Sonic 2 is def my 2nd fav of the classics but I'm surprised how much more u liked the OST for it over CD since well. CD was usin the SEGA CD for most of the OST to make the arrangements more varied & complex. Don't get me wrong 2 is still a banger but I jus think u get a lot more unique & powerful stuff from CD even in the US OST. It's funny that no matter how many times I go through 2 I've NEVER gotten to that bottomless pit section like seemingly EVERYONE ELSE & while ofc I'm experienced I'm by no means a pro & I don't actively try to avoid it but I've never hit the pit or got the extra scrapped level lol. Wing Fortress & death egg seem pretty tough at 1st but it's pretty easy to cheese/exploit if u have good timin & know wut u're doin lol. Metropolis Zone has its weak points but it's not anythin crazy. I can't believe this is the 2nd time I've been made to realize these R jus robo pokemon lol. There's somethin bout the stage that makes it a bit more annoyin but if u're use to it & learn most of the timins & positions for attack/item boxes it's not a big deal so ye "stop dwellin & keep it movin" is def a good summation for any classic game lol. I forgot to mention that out of all the special stages in the classics CD is undeniably my fav. If we're jus talkin 90s classics that'd be followed by 2 but it's not very close lol.
I preferred 3's blue sphere challenges with CDs bonuses in second from the classics. Also I think Sonic 2's soundtrack jives with me more partially because of nostalgia
