Thank you for speaking up. I left all unpaid design teams about 7 years ago. Until artists stop working for free nothing will change. Many of the largest art and craft companies are the worst offenders because there are an endless line of women willing to work for free. I wonder how many men would put up with that? I do see men working for "exposure" in the fine art world. It's never as beneficial as you think it will be and honestly if they want your work badly enough (or more likely, access to your audience) they will pay you but not until we stop working for free. Why buy the cow right?

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich, I follow your channel, and you’re so generous in everything you offer for free. The positive thing I can say about design teams is that it could be a good exchange for a new artist who needs both supplies and motivation to use them. But I would never recommend being on more than one team for a finite period of time,

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter Před 4 lety +80

@@barbclark69 that's true but they rarely give new artists a chance. They want artists who are already popular because it is advertising for them. I know when I am approached to be on design teams they care more about the people I can reach than the art I make. It's kinda sad. If they give new artists without a platform a chance I'd be all for it.

Women working for free - that’s a great point too. Much like I imagine all the various home parties for products I’m sure we’ve all attended... what a scam!

@@thefrugalcrafter You are right, Lindsay. I've been applying to be on many design teams, to be able to afford the costs of products, so I can keep making crafts, ... but I always get no for an answer. And I know that if I had lots of subscribers it would be different. So, it is not easy for me. I see many beautiful products that everybody are using, I wish I could afford them, but I can't. One person even told me me that she is very well known, and she is not short on promotional avenues. I know the answer would have been different if I had many subscribers. If I have talent, doesn't matter..., I'll keep asking, maybe someone will appreciate my work one day. Take care Linsay!

"Paid in glitter" - that says it all. I really appreciate that you made this video as people need to hear your message. I do know of one other person who stepped down from a DT before their tenure was up (for all the same reasons in your video), and the company made them return ALL the products - stamps & dies - they had sent to them over that time because "in their eyes", she was breaking the contract (not that they ever signed one - it was a verbal contract which I guess is still legal). It was awful for her because she lived in another country & it cost her a HUGE amount of money to post it to them because it was a large and heavy box. I was on a DT for about 2 years for a bricks & mortar store. The owner had seen my card making blog and asked me to join their Design Team. I was so over-the-moon (a dream come true my ego said) - and was very naive about it & didn't even think about it much before I said "yes" & didn't even ask for the fine print. I felt alot of pressure and was stressed as I needed to meet deadlines using products that I didn't love yet had a young family to care for - and was also saying to them over & over: "Just a minute, I will be right with you....". I felt like a fraud blogging cards using their products & saying how amazing they were when that wasn't what I really thought. I also had to purchase extra products from their store to use for those cards so it cost me so much money & often they were products that I wouldn't have ordinarily bought. And I couldn't use "old" products - they ALWAYS had to be NEW ones! I also had to post my finished cards to them at my own cost & because it went as a parcel to another State, it cost alot of money. In the end, I was sucked dry creatively & wasn't making cards for my own use - just cards for their store. I felt so guilty stepping down but it was the right thing to do as my heart just wasn't in it - and finally I had the freedom to do what I wanted using old products if I wanted & whenever I felt like it & soon my creative joy returned. And the freedom of not needing to promote the products, linking the products on my blog post, not uploading my cards to their online gallery etc. - it was endless. No regrets about stepping down & I will never be on a DT again even though I have been asked. One thing that I do now is to not watch You-Tube videos about the latest new products & gadgets - I watch ones such as yours because they are heartfelt & inspire me - and it sure stops me from buying because I use what I have. Thank you for this video & for speaking up :-)

CraftingMyWorld, I love your share. I was recently on a small design team and it was wonderful. I love the women too. But. I have some goals that take time and energy and they kept getting put off. As an artist, I’ve worked for free more than I’d like to admit. And I just won’t do it anymore. That’s the bottom line for me. And it goes further than design teams too. People don’t really get how hard we work as artists. Anyway, so glad for your story. 💗🎨

I had no idea this kind of stuff was really happening behind the scenes. I follow a lot of blogs and CZcams channels that make cards (and repeatedly name drop everything they are using) and other mixed media stuff and wondered how these ladies could afford to buy all the stuff they use. I guess those little links under their videos to the store for the product they are using provides them with enough income to live under that stress.....me, I like to go my own way!

Well said! when one of the crafter/artist I follow on You Tube announces with joy that they are joining a DT, I cringe. I know that they are going to be using $50 dies, $30 stamp sets, $10 ink pads and try to convince me that I need another tube of blue paint. On top of that, their creativity is not going to expand beyond their product. Maremi, you are your best brand, girl. I love it when you use ripped up cardboard and broken pieces of trinkets and torn paper scraps. These are things we all have and can do. Love your channel and you are so creative.

It depresses your creativity and is too much. I continue on one design team and am an ambassador for one company. That is manageable and I’m still enjoying it. When I don’t enjoy it any more, I’ll be finished. When I say no, it gives someone else the chance to say yes. Time to paint with your sweet babies is precious. Enjoy it, dear one! Great video and topic. 10 years ago, I was on multiple design teams for digital scrapbooking designers. I was working a full time job creating for the teams. Whilst I enjoyed it at first, it eventually started to consume my life and other things suffered as a result. I put it all on hold whilst I moved house, but have never gone back to it. I'm in a totally different craft now, but awhile ago, I realised it to was starting to consume my life, so took steps so that I could keep going with it, whilst keeping balance with the rest of my life. We can all easily get swept up in the excitement etc., and before you know it, it takes over your mind and life. We all need balance in our life, but when that is gone, so much suffers as a result. Thank you for this video! I’ve been applying to be part of a DT for many years but never chosen. I thought it was the path that I needed to take to jumps start my career. Discouraged.....I started watching more CZcams videos and stumbled upon your video making trash to treasure ( redesigning paper bags ). I remember tagging you on one of my creation.....you responded (I was so ecstatic 😁). I am passionate on the idea of using what you have and you gave me inspiration to go for it. It is a lot of work being on my own but it is so fulfilling. Like you said “Spreading your wings is a blessing” Thank you for another inspirational video. I am on the right path! Thank you! Blessings to you and your family!

Good for you! I started following you a few years ago because of the “how to break a blank page.” I loved it. I have stopped watching a lot of the “popular” crafters on CZcams because I’m tired of always watching things they are selling. It use to be more about the craft. Now it’s all about the products and I’m so tired of that. I’m looking forward to seeing where you will take this freedom of yours :).

I know; right? You said that very well, because I watched a video last week, and I can't recall who it was or the product they were using, but every other breath was talking about XYZ product, and rinse and repeat -- it felt so cold and impersonable, like she was reading from a script to ensure she said the company's name X number of times

I understand what you are saying. I belonged to a blog design team about 8 years ago. I had to upload a tutorial every month. I found it taking time away from my art and from my personal and work life. After the tutorial was posted, I had to field ALL the questions asked. People would see the posts in the past and ask questions, so I was answering questions often. I was not paid in any way. I finally said, sorry...I am not longer doing this. You must do what is best for you and your family.

Thanks for your video Marta, I was crying all the way through it. I wasn't on a design team, but was on a committee for a rescue group and was the caretaker looking after a property with 25 rescue horses while working full time. I was fundraising, holding open days, making cards for the charity, etc, etc, it was endless. It took so much time and I was so tied to it, Christmas after Christmas where I had no break and was dragging my husband into it all with me as he was my support. The committee (who did none of the physical work) got nasty and complaining that I wasn't giving enough when I couldn't give any more ... I was paying for most things out of my own pocket and was being sucked down a giant black hole. It is two years since I left the organisation and I am still emotionally scared by the whole mess. Your video hit where I was emotionally and now I am focusing on my craft and I have my own time .... your words are important and resounding .... don't let ANYONE take too much from you because this world is greedy and many people will take and take and take from you. Your craft space and craft cafe are such a safe and comfortable place to be. Thank you for your insight and love, as always xxx

I have always loved your work Marta and been a fan for so many years. Your words rang true for me because the very reason I left my monthly slot on a magazine (and resigned from a short stint as a DT member for an on-line website) was precisely the pressures and the stress and using products they insisted on. For the DT slot, I had to buy my own products from them at 10% discount so not free at all. For the magazine, it was great in the beginning, then my 'handler' changed and our half page slot was squeezed down to a quarter of a page, then an eights and our free products dried up altogether. Not that I was in it for the free products in the first place - it was just nice to see my face and crafty piece in the magazine every month. Leaving was as you described ... a huge weight lifted. I love what I do now, because I craft for myself! Whatever you do, dear Marta, you will succeed to wow us, every step of the way. I have watched you grow and thank you SO MUCH for sharing your talent with us all. Love Carol x

I thought of joining a design team as well several times, but to earn a commission, you need to invest plenty of time and money. The DT I thought of joining would have given me at least a 20 % discount and early access on brand new material, but that's it.
So you buy stuff for some 100 €, technical equipment for perhaps some 1000 € and that's something you need to re-earn.
And they usual tell you what kind of items you have (not) to use, like concurrent brands are "forbidden" to be used on your promo videos. I felt a little threatened when I read the contract and backed off immediately. Plus, you are forced into Social Media and I am not crafting for that. I wanna craft when I feel like it and not being forced to make videos on demand. That would kill my creativity and I wouldn't create with my heart any longer, but switch to quick & dirty mass production.

I never understood why people want to work for free on a design team that may not even be your style or preference. You are your own brand. I think that the brands have quite a racket going that benefits them. I’m glad you are clarifying the downsides. Build your own brand. You have a great, unique style and can create your own brand, line and monetize it I’m sure if you want to. I sell my crafts locally, it more than pays for my supplies and gives me pocket money.

I love my crafting and always use it as my happy place and time for me to escape real life, even if just for a little while. I'm not shy of hard work but would never enjoy the deadlines and pressure of being on a DT. I'm fortunate enough to sell my crafts, but even now I get orders for cards that are totally unrealistic. Videos, blogs, photography, cardmaking, monthly mail ins, networking...the list is endless and to what kind of compensation? Absolutely nothing! There isn’t any type of representation, so the owners feel they have the right to do whatever they please. Change deadlines, demand purchases, increase workload. This was a good video on the subject. Thanks for the info, I never considered even trying to be on a design team, as I actually thought they were designers of the products. I now see they are demonstrating and promoting the products, not designing them at all. So these companies make a ton of money and don't pay these DT's for all their work. That seems really wrong. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am so glad you found the courage to make the jump and find the needed balance and direction for your creative life that would best serve life with your family too. A friend who was on a local craft store's design team had shared how things were for her, and it was much like you just shared. The heart you have for your viewers is wonderful and was such a blessing to see today. On this platform it is hard to tell who is genuine sometimes. I have found that people who are genuine, even vulnerable at times, are the kind of people I want to spend my time watching and having as a part of my community of those I learn from, so thank you.
So I cannot imagine being on design teams and managing CZcams as well. How did you find time to sleep? A little over a year ago I jumped into the CZcams world and became content creator, so I know a little bit about how easily even a simple channel can use up the time in a day. What started out with a focus on sharing what I know and encouraging others. I realized early on that if I didn't want this to become the lowest paying job I ever gave my life to I was going to have to not go for monotization for a while and just do what I loved. If I did it for any other reason it would own me, and I would grow to resent the work, and probably the people I wanted to reach too. I had to learn that lesson the hard way in a career I had a few years ago.
So I am very happy for you and really glad I took the time to watch your video today. May God bless you as you continue to create and encourage all of us to go for it too. Much love and respect ~Patty~

I love watching you and the interactions with your family. I have watch my art improve and I have sold some of my artwork to friends and family. I now have some people telling me to create a page on Facebook or Esty and I'm very hesitant to do that because I feel pressure to perform on demand. My crafting is first of all is fior me. My therapy and I refuse to compromise my feelings or my art. Thank yoh so much for doing this video. I chose to become a member because of your beautiful work and the truth in your videos. Always be true to yourself and know that you will always shine. Love you dearly from your friend in New Orleans, LA, USA! ❤⚜

Such a wonderfully honest video! I agree with you 100%. All the effort, time and energy and emotion sapped from you, for nothing! I have to work full time to maintain myself financially. I could never survive by just crafting. Artist are free spirits, you should be able to express yourself when the urge hits you and most importantly you should ENJOY it!!
I think you have coped extremely well, but as you say, everything comes at a price. In your case it’s at the cost of family time!
You should always do what works for you and makes you HAPPY inside! Thank you so much for sharing this. Definitely something to think about for all of us! Hugs and smiles 🌸🤗💗🌷🦋

I buy a few when I can but like to be able to craft with my imagination. Thank you for sharing your life and family with us. Your little daughter is so precious......💜

    Well done, girl!!!
Many years ago I had to make a similar decision and I know what you went through. I hope many crafters will see this and understand the meaning of your message. I often asked myself how the crafters managed the stress you are talking about in this podcast. There`s a reason why famous brands are as rich as they are. They use people and make them believe how lucky they must be to work for them for free. Hypocrisy on a very high level. You can`t put artists in a cage because you kill their mojo and damage their soul.
Sending love & light your way. Love you, girl!

I have been on several DT's. The last one, a major one, I was on for just shy of 5 years. I won't ever do it again. This person I was designing for, was, I thought, a very close friend. Turned out not so much. I am happy and thankful for the few genuine friendships that I have made through my time on DT's, but the cost, emotional, time, and also $$$, is just not worth it. Now, I make art for me, with whatever I want. I am free and it is amazing how the creativity and inspiration just flows when you are under no time constraints, no product boundaries. Thanks for being so honest and for also always being an inspiration

This is EXACTLY what happened to me as well. As much as I loved my teams and to create, one of my teams started requiring videos. I had to invest also in a new laptop and it was a wake up moment. After that, I was requested to send in samples for a shopping channel and I never got my projects back. One of those was an art journal I had made over 4 years. I was D.O.N.E.
Hugs to you - I feel your pain and it brings everything I felt back then too. Don’t lose your family time for glitter or paper.

I agree... And i felt that someone is speaking my heart..... I am not a professional crafter.. I am an engineer and been having an engineering job... Things are same even in engineering industry... We don't like but no other option for survival for living and hence need to go to job.... But my hobby, crafting is a meditation n peace in my life... It does not pay me... But it relaxes me n i enjoy doing it.... I wish that i can be a full time crafter.... And thanks Marta as you are great inspiration and i started art journalling n mix media just because of you... And thanks that you added me in maremi 's creative cafe.... I love posting my hobby projects and can view all projects from crafty friends... I feel like i am part of it and living a bit of my dream.... Thanks a lot....

It is so evident that your family means more to you than anything. I love the way you are able to express your feelings and I want you to know that watching you throughout this whole pandemic mess has greatly touched my heart. You deserve the happiness you have found. The outro showing Hannah enjoying her art is so precious. I look forward to seeing your future videos with Emily and Hannah. Marta I am very happy that you have chosen to move ahead and will be able to be less stressed. My favorite videos are those where you use just scraps and very basic stuff. I watch those to get my inspiration. I spent years watching videos and then buying expensive products but not truly enjoying them. Marta from you I have learned to create with what I have and with the creative thoughts that come to me. Life is to short to be stressed. Thank you for teaching me to trust my creativity. I can hardly wait for new videos, so I can watch you soar. I am just learning to fly...someday I hope to soar....thank you thank you for sharing yourself and your beautiful family. Terrie

Marta! Your willingness to show us substitutes for expensive products is one the BIGGEST reasons I began watching you. I have fallen in love with your artistic style and come to believe you are as beautiful INSIDE as you are OUTSIDE. Your heart is giving and trusting and your creativity is just amazing. Please know that many of us support your decision to leave design teams and we are GRATEFUL you did! :) You are the single most important person in my 'art journey' because you are REAL and HONEST and HUMBLE. You teach me things even when you are not teaching! LOVE TO YOU and your beautiful family. You are right to cherish them and make them your focus.

Thank you for your honest video. You are where you are today because of your talent, your warm and honest personality and your incredible hard work. Being part of design teams was one of the bits of hard work (and probably, hopefully a little joy) you put in. Somehow a kind of investment into your development as an artist but certainly as a presence in this community. This is how building a living out of a hobby works. At a certain point however, you have to move on, and that`s what you did. And maybe you just took on too many DTs and that is what burned you out a bit? I also think about what you said about that comment you got from your viewer Caroline about being able to afford all these products. I personally feel that too much choice and stuff kills my creativity because I am overwhelmed. Much love to you and your precious daughter(s)!

I really love your channel. I just found you recently so I am slowly going back in time to watch past videos. I am learning so much! I am someone you have thought of -- I don't have a lot of supplies, but it is such a joy to look at something I have on hand in a new way. Making backgrounds out of packaging and stuff on hand. Trying different techniques with plain gesso. It is wonderful! I have gone from just watching craft videos for a year or so to actually trying techniques. You make art very approachable and not so scary. Thank you for being wonderful!
