The Ultimate Local’s Guide to Philly || Gatekeepers

- Welcome to the city of cheesesteaks (and brotherly love) where local radio host and Philly native Natalie Egenolf will be showing us the ropes. Check some ‘firsts’ off your list as we visit the country’s first Axe throwing bar, first pizza museum, the spot where your favorite dive bar order originated and a few other historic landmarks.
In every city there’s someone who’s connected, who knows where to go on a slow Monday night and can get a table anywhere they want on a Friday - in every city there’s a Gatekeeper. In this Thrillist travel show, we’re sending our host across the country to meet up with these Gatekeepers and experience first hand everything you should make sure to do/eat/drink, one city at a time.

#Thrillist #Gatekeepers #Philadelphia - Zábava
Make sure you check out the rest of the season of Gatekeepers over here: czcams.com/video/1mYidyPU8qQ/video.html
She definitely carried this episode and was a great host i mean co-host.
They definitely picked the right person to show him around Philadelphia. I actually know Natalie and she loves the city. Thrillist did right selecting her as Gatekeeper of Philadelphia
For real he sucked
@@cejannuzi with everything she does she really doesn't have the time. But if she did she would be good for that
His pretentious moustache is the problem. Plus his boring, aloof personality.
how to get a date with her? Lucky dude!
Natalie made the episode enjoyable despite the sleep-deprived host. Hope to see more of her on the channel.
This is her point of view. I think Philly has so much more culture that is missing here. Please do another Philly show.
Yeah, they missed a LOT. Jim's, The Philly Taco, some of the nook bars that a lot of us hang out at, the subtle differences between neighborhoods, the italian market. That's just off the top of my head. There's a shit ton more.
@@danielmckay1761 💯
@@danielmckay1761 Nah the Philly taco would ruin the experience. Just 2 things that don’t go together.
Facts
I can’t believe nobody has brought a YT person to Porky’s Point or Freddy & Tony’s. Not enough ppl talk about all of the delicious Puerto Rican & other phenomenal food spots there are. They always want to talk about boring cheese steaks.
Female host is awesome. Super positive and great energy.
She's definitely one of the most positive people I know. And yeah I actually know her, small world huh?
Tristan Homan and she’s super thiccc
I think they fired him, there’s a new guy doing Gatekeepers. Good riddance, Justin is too flat; very one dimensional 🤷♀️
She should be the host and let him hold the camera. She appears to be smart, witty, and passionate about her food. Most enjoyable!
"Hold on wait so you're telling me we're in Philly and I'm about to eat a pizza? Bro, who told you it was okay to cook pizza here bro? I mean it's okay pizza but I'm from New York bro."- The host
It’s probably bc im bias but NY pizza has never been as good as Philly/Jersey pizza.
I was under the impression with the introduction of this channel is this Justin guy explores & enjoys new places, cultures & food. And that is clearly not happening here. It's almost as if he is choosing not to give Philadelphia a chance or he just doesn't give a crap about what this girl has to show him
Nah he’s too cool. Seen it all before why would he be impressed by anything like this. Did you also know he has a mustache?
Wow i seen comments as i made mine and everyone will agree this guy has no personality he's not to on camera !!
Miser 4real thx for the notes lmk what you think of the others
Can of PBR and a shot of Beam for $3.00 may be the greatest bar special ever. 👍
a place i used to go to had a special containing a can of tecate and a shot of tequila
and they didn't mention it specifically, but the reason it's called the "city wide" is because pretty much every bar in Philly now does some version of it.
I am so glad she didnt take him to the tourist traps for cheese steak... Geno's and pats
How did this guy get this job? He's as exciting as watching paint dry😶🥱
I'm a Philly girl now living in Maryland. I'm glad she took you to Steve's! I love their steaks. I wish you could have gone to more neighborhoods, they all have something wonderfully unique.
Ayee I’m a current Marylander. I’m about to go to Philly for a day trip. Any recommendations?
I love Natalie, she carried this episode. What the hell were you guys thinking having this guy do this show? He blows boat people
Lol
Definitely could’ve shown more respect to her... why even post the episode if he’s bored the entire time and seems disappointed... you go on vacations for a living and eat for free.. I like this series but this one was off and really rubbed me wrong.
Loser liberals... This guy needs to be shipped to a Venezuela along with Bernie.
Appreciate you for watching, thx for the notes, lmk what you think of the others
You ever think that they set up the dialogue and demeanor of the episode that way? He’s the new comer and it’s her city. That’s why she’s more enthusiastic and “trying to win him over” aka the viewers... it’s content. Just enjoy the food and places they are show-casing. Stop nit picking and being so judgmental.
I agree she made me feel more excited about philly than he did
@@SkepticalGuy Jesus christ do you people jack off to politics too? You people sound miserable bringing it up during EVERYTHING lmao
This host is such a dud. The episode is set up in a way that she is trying to convince him that Philly is good enough? But he is not a professional chef or even known in the foodie/travel community, so who is he to judge? Instead of having this tone of trying to win him over, it should have just been him enjoying local spots in Philly. He is definitely the wrong guy for this job. The local host, Natalie, was fantastic. So energetic and fun -- and the host of the show, Justin Lizama, just fell flat and seemed like a buzzkill. Please get someone else for this show and do a new episode on Philly! And no, Justin - you cannot be an adopted Philadelphian.
This was a swing and a miss.
He’s terrible. A loathsome human being. He uses the word “connect” and is friends with the guy whose dad founded benihana. If he’s the gatekeeper lets close the gate.
haveyouseenmysock There’s definitely better cities in America to do this show in.
@@eamon4279 Philly is one of the largest, oldest, densely populated, and diverse cities in the Americas, and has an amazing food scene and really only is held back by its crime and litter....and it could stay open until 4 a.m. like NY....but it's a great city not really sure what you're trying to say.
@@eamon4279 you must not know anything about Philly lol
Philly native-Murphs is a hidden gem and he looks like Tony Danza’s boring forgettable son like the Rob Kardashian of Thrillist
As a NJ native, Philly was always the place to be! There are endless, literally I mean endless, things to do especially on the weekends. My favorite is summertime when certain spots have the beautiful lights strung up on all of the trees & the hammocks set up. Ugh such great memories 🥰 & the food?!? I mean, the selection alone will leave you mind blown.
Murphy’s is really a best kept secret. The lobster ravioli is what they needed to try.
For the first time in 42 years I am in love !
As someone who lives here, I didn't expect to like anything about this, but SHE'S AWESOME! (and very respectable choices too)
I cant take that handlebar moustache seriously
Lmao she is awesome, the “host” needs to humble himself.
Poor guy just can't seem to win over the comment section.....
If he squints his eyes like he’s cool again I’m going to lose it. This guy is not a good host in the slightest... his cohosts are great though👌
Other American cities set their template based on NYC. But Philly, having been the first major American city, set its template on Paris and London of the 1800's. Those New Yorkers who visit often eventually realize Philly is a unique culture, not just a bad "Minnie-me" version of NYC. They would not be so close minded if they went to Paris, London, or Rome; but they don't immediately grasp that Philly is a world class city with its own identity.
sylvester01ful Right. Philly probably looks the most like NYC, not including Chicago's skyscrapers, but you're right. I feel US cities either want to be like NYC, or they hate it and don't want to be associated. Philly is neutral.
@@notsure6187 Philly is closer to looking like Trenton, NJ than NYC. NYC is a different animal
Fish town= gentrification
So?
Going to Philly this summer. This is very helpful.
The host is a walking Ambien pill.
HeathenDeluxe for the record i prefer Valium, thx for checking out the series
😂😂😂
James Franco’s sad mustached cousin.
You should have brought some of that rapier wit to the show. It would have done wonders.
Doesn't help that they ate such a ridiculous amount of heavy food...but yeah.
Anyone with a mustache like that should be walking around with a Colt Peacemaker
Martin Quin I’ll be your huckleberry
Lololo.
That’s not me. I’m Bob Dix. A bartender their. You interviewed Jack Prince the owner.
Hahahaha. It happens all the time
Emma Stone, I mean Natalie, has a lot of charisma. First Gatekeeper who’s energy I dig.
Love this series keep it up!
What’s with the host? 🤨
She makes me want to move there.
I actually know her lol
Tristan Homan well tell her Cole says hi
@@paynoc8446 Ok next time I see her I'll tell her you said hi
Same! I would love to have her show me around
Philly is a great food city. Murph's is legit.
Yes!! My favorite new show!! Excited for this episode 👌🏽👏🏽🙌🏽
I live in Philly and my favorite spots for cheesesteaks are. John's roast pork cheesesteaks. Dallasandros. Carmen's. Max's steak. Woodrows. Cleavers. Larry's steaks.
Such an enthusiastic host...
Dude that axe throwing shit is sick
This was a very one sided view of Philly, looks like they never left Fishtown, there is no diversity in Fishtown. Steve's sucks not enough meat.
Indeed this is a very much whitebread version of Philly hangouts. Aiight but narrow.
agreed! they should have went to dalessandro's or ishkabibbles for the cheesesteak!
Thanks for the tips! Where do you suggest we'll find the most racially/ethnically diverse parts of Philly?
👍
@@reimourrpower9357 100 percent agree
This guy is on his brussel sprout game. Keep it up Thrillist.
I've watched all of these so far because the concept and the locals are great, but the host is terrible. He just latches onto a phrase and says it 10 times per episode "Philly is aggressive" jeez it _will_ be if you say that one more time
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
love this channel! always gives me great ideas like the video i just posted about philly restaurants too!!
wow he's no Bourdain... most bored/boring and unenthusiastic tour guide ever.
I'm going to Philadelphia for a few days this Thursday. I took notes on what she said and what she ate lol.
Came back. Murph's is overhyped. It was hipster heaven and some of the items they had were no longer on the menu and they weren't willing to make them (understandably). The fried mozzarella also tasted like frozen mozzarella sticks but in ball form.
to all listening Max's is the best cheesesteak stop in philly hands down!!!!
lol now reading all the comments about him...ouch. lol poor guy. but i just noticed all the thumbnails with his face in them with a SMUG ass look. rofl my god he does it to himself. like sure ya bro you have an awesome job great but jesus christ. bites a sammich "ya this is pretty good" LOL THATS IT?! LOOOOOLLL as the episode plays im just laughing now because its more and more obvious.
The next time that you do a show in Philly, find someone who can take you to different parts to experience different flavors of the city....we just don't do cheesesteaks - there's a chicken breast sandwich in South Philly that will knock your taste buds silly!
what is the sandwich spot called?
@@posheditor well do tell! We are going next weekend :)
Porkys Point, El Punto, and Freddy & Tony’s. Just to name 3 more
Natalie Egenolf is a dish and a catch. The personality gives her a +2 so I'm saying a Philly dime imho. I've always wanted to visit Philly but she sold me.
try it with sharp provolone, *chef's kiss*
Everyone loves nat. Nat and ty make the mikey miss show. Steves is goated btw
Natalie crazy bod!!!
Natalie did great!
Dunno what just happened. I think I looked at boobs for 10 mins and realized I need a girlfriend.
Or a job
New York Guy With a Silly Mustache is this dudes personality
You can tell he enjoyed the New Orleans episode and the host way more than he did Philly and Natalie - and I understand why. The concepts/ideas of spots were really that new or reflective of different aspects of the city. Pretty narrow actually
Agreed! She took him to get a cheesesteak as if he's never had one before; pizza and some beer (cheap beer at that). The best (and you could tell that he was really looking for more) was the Irish Pub serving Italian food! The axe throwing was just "wtf"?
Really digging this show. Another great episode!
I'm digging the show too. I actually know the girl that's showing him around Philadelphia
I thought the hipster trend died down the last view years... I guess I was extremely wrong
fuccboi's and hipsters apparently will never die... Livin' the Bape life in 2018 is a trend I though died in 2015... I guess I was extremely wrong.
I think I have the same name on YT since I reg on YT, so way over 10 years ago. To be sincere I still like A Bathing Ape, even after all the changes they made and bought the brand from Nigo. And if u want to be a trend Nazi, the trend died way before 2015... so I kinda don't get your point? I thing the guy could be nicer to her and less "mainstream is always shitty" and "im too cool to smile".@@erecechteik
Let's hope not
8:24 That is, what I was going to say Boston has one Lol
why did you reupload it?
Philly Native here and while I understand people have different opinions Steves Prince of Steaks is not even close to other places by a LARGE majority of Philadelphians. She said she likes it not chopped up, that's fine, but if you want a real Philly cheesesteak its Delessandros, Johns Roast Pork, or Jim's. And a real Philly cheesesteak MUST have cheese wiz.
Mike Bonitatibus for sure going to hit up your recommendations
Says you...most people I know don't do whiz.
or provolone
love that mustache, man
Revolution Taco a block from Rittenhouse should be on there.
Be Blessed Brother Shine On
Good job kid. Keep it up. If you haven't done a piece on Texas yet keep it in mind. Best BBQ (But hell all southern states say that) but my beloved Texas definitely has the Tex Mex down. I would say if you are in Northern Virginia sometime to do a piece but I've been here for 6 years and it took me four to find a decent street taco.
This was the best Rom Com I have seen in a long time!
"Born and raised in Philadelphia"
"This is where I was born, this is where I was raised"
real philly folks get steaks from maxes or delasandros..... those are the large spots but we also have local neighborhood spots they are just as good.
dalassandro's yass!!
Chubby's is better
love me some murph's but B&B will always hold a special place in my heart and our Man in Black "Rick D" RIP u are missed.
The dude making pizza is repping a Bends shirt!
Damm to all Philly chick's look like that? I'm going next month and I'm excited.
I'm moving here in 3 months
NICE
What are your favorite Philly spots?!?
The sports stadiums, Xfinity Live. And there's this bar called Evil Genuis and I loved it there I'd totally recomend going there for a drink and a good time
Go to Fratelli's by torresdale and rhawn st to get a jumbo/giant slice of pizza for $2
Union Transfer for shows
Chubby's - Favorite steak
John's Roast Pork, Nan Zhou Hand drawn noodle house, Dim Sum Garden, Pho 75, Han Dynasty, Vedge, Zahav, another 25 restaurants and about 50 different Bars.
Gotta go to the papi store for a cheesesteak smh
Philly isn’t the first place to do this. Lumberjacks been doing this for decides
My god host is so bad. God bless the girl tho.
This episode did not make me want to go to Philly and I've been already and went to way better places than she highlighted. The only one that seemed worth trying is Steve's
She did a good job on the last two. Max’s is the best cheesesteak spot and the ace place is whack . ..
Natalie coulda did such a better job of showing him different places but she’s looking fineeeeee as hell good lord!!!!
Reminds me of that episode of Bruno where the skinhead told him he had a Bender’s Mustache.
Awesome episode. I would love for Natalie Egenolf to show me around..... Oh the 1950's called and they want their mustache back Justin
lose the stash bro!
John's Roast Pork serves the best cheesesteak in Phily.
Henry I And their Roast Pork (Philly's unknown, under-appreciated sandwich) is fricking great, too.
Steves in northeast philly da best
@@euroclyde John's Roast Pork sandwich with Spinach and Sharp Provolone = Best sandwich in the country.
@@CH-sl5eq Bold! I won't argue with that, but will say I find there are certain sandwiches for certain times. For me, that makes the proclamation of "best" very difficult.
That Roast Pork IS incredible.
@@minjakidd6468 Agreed
im in love with this chick
I'm enjoying the series, but this is one of the weaker episodes. Justin, were you jet lagged or feeling under the weather?
Yoooooo. I love her.
I fcking hate that when I tell people I grew up in fishtown, this is what they think of now. It makes me pissed and depressed as fck because I grew up there pre-gentrification but I since moved away when my parents moved to the southwest. When I first heard what happened to my neighborhood I was shocked. I went home to visit and everyone but one neighbor I knew was gone, she told me they’d all been bought out of their homes & a bunch of fcking yuppies with fancy cars lived there now. Trump specifically apparently bought up the property on my old block. I’ve heard these assholes have tried to rebrand it as “new fish”. It feels like my childhood was bought & sold, I can never revisit it. I wanted to bring my daughter there one day, but it’s long gone.
She s awesome, he s a douch
I'm sorry but shorty lost me when she said she goes to Steves and get's cheese wiz ... heck no that's not the jawn
then she referred to pat's knowing damn well pat's and Gino’s is straight cheeks... I gotta go
dalessandro's is the spot !
Steve is okay, I’m not a fan of the thick slices IMO. Pats is gross again imo. Whiz is amazing! The rest of the video is awesome!
The Flyers haven't won the cup since 1975.
in the last episode the hose seems pretty chill. but he seems not interested in this episode. but I see people ripping him in the comments, maybe he's just tired from flying all over the US, maybe a going to a personal issue, who knows? take it easy on the guy
Steves blows Pats blows Genos Blows. Please go to to jims on south, dalessandros on wendover or tony lukes on ontario. the first three are burger king mcdonalds and wendys
This guy looks like a cowboys fan. Or at least hes acting like it.
@justin lizama how come you're never impressed by anything bruh? You need to talk to someone?
Damn girl
Philly native here. Steve’s is trash. No real Philly person gets cheese wiz. That place cheesesteaks taste like horrible. School lunch feel. Corner stores have better cheesesteaks. Don’t go to Geno’s either. 🤢🤮
beautyfool ishkabbibles?
I eat whiz. What do you eat? American? Tastes like wax.
Know plenty of people that get wiz, I'd say the majority does and Jim's > your corner store.
You must be smoking herion down fishtown smh "no real philly person gets wiz" u speak blasphemy
whats my name jigga thats what I'm saying, my man probably likes the corner store cause he doesn't know how to order properly and got fucking roasted.
Was this philly or fish town she didn't do a good job. It's the whole philly
It was Fishtown man...did you see any Black, Latino, Asian or Eastern European people?
This guy is way more muted than you'd think someone that annoying would look but I guess you gotta be that way for that kinda job
