  • In this video, I study the amplitude of the driven damped harmonic oscillator as a function of the natural frequency of undamped motion, and apply it to a child on a swing, an LRC circuit, and vocal formants.

    Maximizing amplitude as a function of natural frequency w0 with driving frequency w held constant does indeed give w0=w. However, maximizing amplitude as a function of driving frequency w gives a value of w that is smaller than the natural frequency w0. This is difficult to see without actually doing the derivative, and setting it equal to zero.
