    wow those people were obnoxious, but this was by far the best eclipse video i've seen. shows the ground and sky at the same time, exactly what I wanted to see .

      Glad you liked the video. Here's another one with both ground and eclipse views:

      Keep the sound off if you don't care to hear the crowd. At the 2017 eclipse, if you tend to be annoyed by your neighbors' cheering, be sure to go off to an isolated area! Some info on selecting a viewing site:

      Yes, I fall into that category, but I've only been to 6 eclipses, which is a small number compared to the truly fanatic ones. I'm going to start out in Jackson, WY, prepared to move either east or west depending on weather, smoke, traffic, etc.

      ShadowBloomingVeronika Unfortunately I won't be able to make it out to Great Britain this time around. The next total eclipse I'll definitely shoot will be in August 2017 when one passes through the width of the continental U.S.
      As for the March eclipse, even if the sun is behind clouds, stop and look around. Even if you can't see the sun, when the eclipse is close to maximum (I hope you'll be at the northern end of Scotland, at least) the light will be eerie.

    so let me get this straight...day time becomes dark when entering the penumbra and umbra?!

    • @DaveKodama
      @DaveKodama  Před 9 lety +5

      Yes, it does as long as you're in the eclipse path. It looks like a sunset all around you.

    • @ShadowriverUB
      @ShadowriverUB Před 6 lety

      Totality, the darkness is when it enters umbra. In optics, penumbra is part of the shadow that object partly covers light source in and it a blured part of shadow which for observer in the eclipse is seen as partial eclipse, umbra is part of shadow where object covers entire light source and prevents all the light coming to surface directly (because you still got light reflected from other places, like lit up atmosphere haze in distance aka 360 sunset) creating total darkness,in case of eclipse that is totality. In 3D space umbra is in shape of cone shrinking where penumbra is in shape of trapez spreading out, because moon is too far away, umbra is very small while penumbra covers entire hemisphere of earth and yes that means if you see partial eclipse technically you already in shadow of moon because at location you are you not getting 100% of sun light anymore, ofcorse because sun is super bright it makes not much difference until you it covered something over 60% you start to feel difference in light and it visibly dim over 95%. In case of lunar eclipse earth is a lot bigger then moon and earth umbra can cover entire moon, so observers on moon can usally see solar eclipse totality 2 times per year when ever they are on bright side of full moon.

    You'll see a partial eclipse in 2017 if you stay in Las Vegas. In general you need to move yourself somewhere to see a total eclipse. On average a given place on earth will see a total eclipse every few hundred years so it's very likely you'll never see one in your life if you don't actually make an effort to go and see one.

      Yes, it felt noticeably cooler. Sometimes a breeze comes up during eclipses that enhances the coming.

      I have a backup site there, in case the weather is looking bad in Wyoming at my primary site. I have several articles on planning for this eclipse here: www.astrocamera.net/2017/0821/index.htm

  • @filiplinhart9034

    why is the darkness coming only at the last moment? I heared that some people didn't realize that an annular or very deep partial eclipse was occuring even with luminosity decreased by 95 percent

    • @DaveKodama
      @DaveKodama  Před 5 lety

      In partial phases, the sun disappears so gradually that your eyes adapt to the darkness without your awareness. As you get closer to totality, the light looks "odd" with strange shadows, for example,, but if you're not aware an eclipse is occurring, you might not notice it. Only in the last few minutes will you be aware that the sky is darkening, but if you don't have a filter, you still won't be able to look directly at the sun. Only when he sun is totally covered can you look directly at the sun to see what is happening. No photos or video can accurately show what is happening, unfortunately. You have to be there!

    • @filiplinhart9034
      @filiplinhart9034 Před 5 lety

      And annular eclipses are much less interesting? I imagine its not making people so "euphoric"... Is it true that shadows become "multiple"? and have you ever seen a "beaded eclipse"? I never found a video, I would be really curious

    • @DaveKodama
      @DaveKodama  Před 5 lety

      That's right. Annular eclipses are interesting, but not as dramatic as a total eclipse. The shadows are still interesting and fun to play with: astrocamera.net/2012/0520/pinhole.htm A beaded eclipse is probably referring to a total eclipse in which and moon and sun are very close to the same apparent size so that Baily's beads appear all around the eclipsed sun. Such an eclipse would last a very short time and you would have to be exactly on the centerline.

      in april 1912 my native town was exactly on the centerline of such an eclipse, but I wasn't born :-D
