LYRICS:
I put a spell on you
And now you're mine
You can't stop the things I doI ain't lyin'
It's been three hundred years
Right down to the day
Now the witch is backAnd there's hell to pay
I put a spell on you
And now you're mine!
Hello, Salem!
My name's Winifred!
What's yours?
I put a spell on you
And now you're gone
(Gone, gone, gone, so long!)
My whammy fell on you
And it was strong
(So strong, so strong, so strong!)
Your wretched little lives
Have all been cursed
'Cause of all the witches working
I'm the worst
I put a spell on you
And now you're mine
(Watch out! Watch out! Watch out! Watch out!)
If you don't believe,You better get superstitious
Ask my sisters
Sarah: "Ooh, she's vicious!"
I put a spell on you...I put a spell on you...Sisters!
Winnie: "Ah say into pi, alpha maybe upendi!"
Party guests: (repeating) Ah say into pi, alpha maybe upendi!
Winnie: "In comma-coriyama"
Party guests: In comma-coriyama
Winnie: "Hey hi, say bye-bye-i-i-i-i-i-i-i"
"Bye, bye"

This cover SLAPS. I've had this song stuck in my head since I was a kid.
What does it slap?
The spell worked I guess
Yass bitch me too I just wish it was longer.
I guess that is the spell. The fact we still know, remember and sing it after all these years.
what does winnie said "in comma-coriyama" mean? please explain to me who knows
I have always loved when she screams “Hello, Salem!” Like she’s headlining the concert😂
I never noticed this moment before, I love it. Pretty sure it’s a Gypsy reference, which Bette led in a movie adaptation. So clean and clever.
You could easily imagine that Winifred is actually thoroughly enjoying not being despised as well as the fact it's so easy for her to curse all the parents at once.
I believe that is a reference to Gypsy, which she starred in on tv. In one of the numbers she calls out "Hello everybody my name is Rose! What's yours?"
Jajaja
She WAS headlining a concert! 😂😂😂
Betty Midler ended this song so dope ! The “BYE BYE” WAS EVERYTHING! That run is classic from my childhood
Nobody talks about how she vocally killed this song
@@rjbmore RIGHT !!! Like she did her thing vocally ! Now I’m Finna watch the video 😩
@@rjbmore Watch/Listen to beaches the sound track is good and she sings most of it
😂👊🏾
I thought so too!
This performance just proves that of all three Sanderson Sisters, Winnifred is the most the most dangerous. She's clearly the most adaptable and intelligent of the three. She took no time at all adjusting to the modern setting, and even capitalized on the children's attempt to warn everyone. Not only did she successfully cast a spell on all of them: she manipulated them into cursing themselves with open arms.
Gotta at least give a little credit to her backup singers, they both caught on extremely quickly and had the awareness to play along, have remarkable memory like Winifred to know the lyrics after one listening, and cast the spell with her during the chant
A música I put a spell on you já estava sendo cantada pelo esqueleto, Winnifred cantou a mesma canção logo após com o feitiço.
To be fair, though, saying she is the smartest of the sisters isn't setting the bar very high... 😅
@@Baffled_King it's pretty darn high for a Disney Channel Movie villain, though.
@Wynn Wynn and the eldest sister who take care of the two even before being a witch.
As a kid, I always figured this scene was here because people sang in kids' movies. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized the song is actually Winifred getting the town's parents out of the way. She's literally "putting a spell" on them, complete with chanting. Insanely clever writing.
I thought the same until I re-watched the movie a few days ago. It was like a moment that just clicked and I was like "Ooh! She really is putting a spell on them!"
Hey me too! I was well into adulthood when I realized that the Sanderson Sisters were enchanting all the parents. I always figured it was just Bette being Bette.
This what distinguishes this scene in the movie. Hocus Pocus is NOT a musical, it’s a simple movie with a major musical number in it.
That truly is brilliant writing
@@JohnBaptist702 although imagine if they turned it into a Broadway musical. Also technically there’s 2 songs. Remember “come little children, I’ll take the away. Into a land of enchantment. Come little children, the time’s come to play. Here in my garden of magic.”
What is the witches' strongest ability? To be able to completely improve a song and dance number on the spot
They have the power of Disney!
*cough* improvise *cough cough*
I wish I had that power.
@@abbycollins i also wish i was a 4th wall breaking mouse
it was a clever move tho to turn their exposure as witches as a chance to play it off as an introduction to a song that will keep the adults of the town enchanted the rest of the night

ICONIC! 🔥
@@ChrisManley1994 I wonder if the most animated wicked witches could perform this hey, there’s a great idea evil which characters can sing I put a spell on you

Man I have ALWAYS LOVED that last note Winifred did when walking back to the stage. From age 9 to 32 that’s legit still one of my favorite parts of the movie
Bette Midler did a great performance of the great song by. Screamin' Jay Hawkins with special lyrics for the film..
Bette is so underused in Hollywood. She should be in everything
We love it!!!!!
Ya I love it
EXACTLY!!! 31 now & still gives me goosebumps
As an adult I now 100% appreciate the talent of Bette midler, that woman is talented.
As a kid I 100% still did appreciate how talented she was and still is.
Me too ❤ as a kid I knew who bette Midler was but seeing her name on screen I didn’t even realise it was her as Winfred 😂 for years and I felt so dumb. Wondering as a kid why she can sing so good. I love Bette Midler. ❤
I had the privilege of seeing her in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway. She’s even better in person!
the vocal run at the end as she’s walking back to the stage combined with her conspiratorial eye contact with her sisters while her back is turned to the audience are SO ICONIC
Just a little tidbit of info. Bette Midler really did sing that-- early in her career she was a blend of stand-up comedienne and singer. She usually sang comedic songs but she had / has a really good voice. She could have just as easily worked on Broadway for entire career if she chose. I love the fact that they managed to work her singing talent into the script.
Most of us had no doubt that Bette really sang this song. People generally know her as a singer. I did not know that she did comedy, but she definitely shows her range of talents in this movie. Such a fabulous diva. :).
I knew I was watching a rising singing star when she appeared on Johnny Carson's show and sang Boogie Woogie Boy From Company B. I believe it was her first TV appearance.
I knew it was her because before I saw her in this I saw her in the First Wives Club and I would always ask my parents if it was really them singing at the end and they would always tell me yes they really did sing "You Don't Own Me" in that movie also she sang in Beaches which I saw before both of these so because of my viewing experience I always knew she was a singer. I knew she did comedy too someone mentioned that to me in passing during my youth a long time ago. But either way singer or actress or whatever she is fabulous.
You should search in youtube, bette midler playing Dolly Levy in Hello Dolly

As a grown women, I still love this movie & song. All the ladies are awesome but Bette is the GOAT!!
Irony, she'd b probably hate being called a goat no matter the context lol
It’s definitely a classic movie. I must disagree when it comes to Bette being a GOAT. That title is reserved for Meryl Streep. Sorry.

The fact this movie came out in like spring
Best movie ever, Bette was so amazing creating this character. I even named my new Puppy Winnie after this character.
Should have named it Winfred then.
Her make up was pure genius in that movie.
1:57 Winnie's last tone, omg I love it!!! What an amazing singing voice she has.
Also, Sarah the blonde witch🥰💞
I LOVE the acting in this. Early on in the song Bette is hamming up the performance to convince everyone she’s legit but as the song comes to the actual spell you can see the desperation and rage in her chanting like “this better work” and once it does the iconic riff and eye contact is 10/10
2:00 the way Winifred look to Mary and Sarah like "it worked perfectly" is so damn cool 🤩

Winifred is delightfully evil. She owns everything she does and is proud of her abilities. When she says "of all the witches working, I'm the worst" there is a stone fast belief in it. What a performer what a character what a memorable baddie.
Yeah but the product of witchcraft in your real time lived experience in actual social life is absolutely vomit inducing. The things you’re exposed to. The thoughtlessness. The oppression. The loss of civil liberties. The disgrace of Oedipus Rex. The viciousness and violence. It’s one thing to perform a musical number in pre recorded time. It’s quite another when those witches are raping and violating your children. Which they are with that evil eye in their heads which the New Testament says is unclean and that there will be no sea 🌊 🇻🇦 🪬 on the new earth. And it’s scatalogical, it’s vomit, it’s bodily waste, it’s the reason you get bunions and athletes foot, it’s the reason you get psoriasis or eczema, it’s the cause of men acquiring AIDS and fecal incontinence and having to wear depends for the rest of their lives, it’s the reason you get uncontrollable itches (witches, bitches), it’s the reason men are inhabiting the experiential states of the beasts of the field, it’s cancer, it’s pestilence, it’s plagues, it’s genital warts. It encourages mindlessness so you will reap all these things in your lives rather than submitting to the Truth of Jesus and all that He taught us. I like a fun musical number as much as the next girl believe me, however what the New Testament teaches is the Truth. You can’t walk down the street now without being defiled by some witch or wizard or falsely accused or having your entire existence crowbarred open, or targeted by those trying to steal your energy and essence and turn you into scrap metal…
I love Hocus Pocus and I love this song.
A must-see movie for Halloween🤩🧙♀️🔮🎃

I’ve always loved Bette Midleds voice. Since hearing her in 1st wives club, her voice was so unique and stood out the best.
She was in first wife's club!!! Who??

I still get chills at those vocals at the height of the song. The actress who plays Winfred can SING! I love listening to this song even on repeat.
I love how the spell is "dance, dance until you die!"
And then the movie calls back to it later when Max and Dani return home and Max comments that they(the parents) must be having a really good time. 🤣
Funniest part!
Lol actually the spell is all the gibberish they were saying.
"Ah-say-into-pie
Oppa-maybe-uppen-die
In-kama-koray-ah-ma
Or whatever all that stuff they said. That's why the crowd repeates it.
1:46
And then she sings byeeeeee 👋
Alot whitches have these dumb little spells those are the fake ones that like the pagans culture and use like potions and all that
but real witches (aks black magic)use candles and maybe herbs and potions idk but they......use latin to cast thier curses and spells. And the movie is based in Salem massachusets where the witchraft trials took place in the 1600s thier was a lot of black magic going on in those days.
1:45 love ittttt
0:15 if you look at the left you will see Mary trying to punched a guy😂😂🤣🤪
0:33 the way she emphasizes what she’s actually doing send chills; Bette was cold blooded in this role =0
This movie was always good. But this one part here makes the whole movie. Without it, I think it would have faded into obscurity. Love this song so much
To think the song almost didn’t make the movie. 😳
1:45 I love this part is perfecttt
Bette Midler was quoted to say that Hocus Pocus "was the most fun I'd had in my career up to that point". No doubt in my mind that the smile Winnie showed as she walked up the stage singing bye-bye was actually Bette breaking character coz she was enjoying herself so much.
You can tell Bette Midler was having the time of her life playing Winifred!
She's never really stopped playing her and I love it! 😂
She's such a classic entertainer (hate to go so far as calling her a "showboat" but yeah...the gal loves to entertain!) So getting to go over the top, be center of attention, sing her heart out and ooze attitude is the ultimate Bette Midler role!
Bette Midler absolutely KILLS it here - I'll always remember watching this with my mum as a kid and her cracking up during this scene. So special, and still a gem. Sarah Jessica Parker was also incredibly gorgeous
Such a great and iconic scene! I remember as a kid feeling the dread of the kids knowing that their parents didn't understand. I think that was the allure of alot of these 90s kids classics where the kids were so empowered with knowledge and wisdom in a world that dismisses them. Anywho, LOVE this film even as an adult! I hated musicals but this is such a great cover and makes total sense in context. The "Dance, dance, dance until you die!!!" always sent chills up my spine as a kid lol.
1:52 Winnifred’s face at this point gives me the goosebumps….
Even all these years later I get chills watching this. She's bewitching me!
I am obsessed with the shimmy and facial expression Bette makes when they sing, “watch out watch out watch out,”! 😂
I can tell Bette Midler enjoyed herself playing this villainous role and you can see the thrill she gets playing it so good. What a song for a super villain 🦹♀️ supernatural witch to sing.
One of my favorite parts is right before this because she's straight up taunting and no one realizes it... her facials kill and the sarcasm oozes in her voice....
"Thank you, Max.... for that MAHHHVELOUS introduction."
This movie stood the test of time.
its actually amazing that i can say that a music scene in a disney movie is really well written. so much attention to detail like how Winifred subtlety communicated to her sisters what she was about to do. And what's so great, is that it wasn't just a random song for the sake of it. it actually effects the plot. she literally casted a spell on everyone 💀 perfection
i love how she just brainwashes the crowd. its so magical and scary at the same time! i adore this film and this song is just so catchy 😭
This song is so addictive I think she actually put a spell on me
She did
That's why we love the movie and still watch it years later lol
my fav parts
1:44 - the spell 😩
1:58 - the bye bye!!!! 🤭
1:21 - sarah is so pretty here whatt??
1:05 & 1:00 - mary and sarah 😍
0:44 That note! I love it!!!!
The way Mary and Sarah supported Winifred by just repeating the last words got me cracked up
If you are referring to her sisters, the one is Kathy Najimity, not a Mary.
@@paulabartholomew8497yes but her character is Mary.
Such a cool scene. and the adults sealed their fate when they kept repeating the words Winnie was singing, cursing them to dance until dawn and they drop dead. Lol but the kids pulled through.
I feel dumb I'm 42. And never realized that lmao
1:58
I watched the movie for the first time like 5 days ago, AND I AM OBSESSED !!!😍
That last riff- “SAY BYE, BYEEEEEE” IS INSANELY GOOD
SHE REALLY PUT A SPELL ON ME
The last bye bye was a earworm spell she casted on us because after that we couldn’t help but love it and replay it
Disney, you really should have had them do a radio edit of this! It would be right up there with thriller as a definitive Halloween song if it didn't have all the movie background noise in it.
Bette Midler did put a spell on me with this song, her charming yet clever wit and voice overwhelmed me.
No one will ever be able to play this better than Bette milder. She is absolute 🔥.
I loved the part where she hit the high note and said bye! Bye!
Yeaaah!! We ALL love that!!!

They couldn't find a better singer and actress to play Winifred than Bette Midler she was awesome great movie 🎥🎥🎥🎥
Bette mildler is so underrated as a singer and an actress
Underrated? You're clearly too young to know her if you're saying that.
That Bette Midler laugh is killer. Hahaha😂😂😂
I had to revisit this song after having just watched the sequel and the song they made for that film, “The Witches Are Back”. It doesn’t hold a black flame 🕯️ to this classic song.
You have nostalgia googles, I watched this song when I was a kid, and I still liked the new song, it have the same spark as the original.

There’s no way they could’ve topped this iconic song
I really like this scene, it's wonderful!!! According to me it's the best part of the movie and even if I'm not an English native speaker I enjoy the song and the way the actresses interprated it. I'm waiting for the second part of Hocus Pocus!!!
bette midler is such an amazing singer

1:58 if you didn’t get goosebumps while this part!! You didn’t see this as a child
The band doesn’t get enough credit…..jumped right in there and made it a bop. Classic!
This scene is the highlight of the movie
Also the scene where Winifred tells Sarah to do her singing to lure the children to them.
This movie is 100% why I love witches and witch imagery
Same ❤❤❤❤
No one could have played this part better than Bette Midler!!
this is probably the first movie seen that i ever had the pleasure of viewing that was so good it was both visually abd audiobly overwhelming. you cant just watch it once. this movie was great but this scene is incredible.
only bet midler could pull this off such a legend
i love the mama rose reference in this song!! “hello salem! my names winnifred! what’s yours?”
This song has Bette all over it. She nailed the song, but don't forgot Sarah sang the song that brainwashed the children to come to them. She is the one that attracts the children to them.
The way she says, now your.....miiiiiinnne!
I love Bette Midler! If you haven't seen her in 'Ruthless People" or 'Big Business' you definitely need to!!!
Ruthless People was hilariously vulgar and fast paced and just plain laugh out loud funny!
Big Business too, Bette & Lily Tomlin had great chemistry.
This didn't need a sequel. Disney decimated its own achievement.
If they wanted to make a sequel they should've went for the novelization, that story was way better than the woke nightmare we actually got.
I had this song stuck in my head for a week, I guess she did put a spell on me
Sarah, Mary, and Winnie look like they're having a blast. Especially Sarah
Sarah was vibing and I'm here for it lol 😆
Sarah is literally always having a blast lol 😆
2:00 At this precise moment, Winnie Sanderson left and The Divine Miss M entered. You can see it on her facial expression that Bette Midler is in the house and has more than understood that she has stolen the show.
If you think about it, the witches are not only casting a spell on everyone during this song. They’re having the time of their lives. They lived in a time being afraid they would be killed if they were discovered to be witches. Here, they’re in a time where no one believes in witches and everyone loves them. So the sisters feel more like they’re at a true home know they have been accepted by society.
Imagine if the movie went with a different approach. What if as the movie goes on, the witches learn about how great Salem is now and they do not have to continue being evil. At the end of the movie, they would’ve gave up their powers and have their souls back. They would live the rest of their lives happy and they would eventually go to Heaven.
The witches never showed anything other than a willingness to exploit and manipulate the people around them to get what they want. There is no alternate take that they would have willingly given up their powers just because the town doesn't hate them. I mean, they didn't start out as hated witches, they were normal and chose to become hated witches. Being not hated doesn't mean they don't want to be witches.
@@cautemoc4624 It was just a random idea that I had going on in my mind. ‘Cause all the fans of this movie love the witches and when you love certain characters so much, you don’t want them to lose. When I saw them at that show in Magic Kingdom waving goodbye to everyone, I was just thinking what if they became magical protectors of Salem.
1:46
Bette Midler's hand gestures, facial expression, dance moves and showmanship, not to mention that incredible one-of-a-kind voice belting out this song is iconic and she now owns this song when i hear it, not to mention the movie. You can't take your eyes off her!
