I have the Zojirushi, and it was almost too effective when I was using it daily in college. Tea made the night before, it was still very hot into the next afternoon.
Why don’t you just add a little cold water to it

I have both the Contigo & Zojirushi and like the fact that I don't have to visually check alignment of the mouthpiece before opening either. The mouthpiece of the Zojirushi allows one to seal the opening and avoid any spillage on lips which is important with very hot coffee... the Contigo, not so much. Heat retention is most most for hiking and such. So for outdoor use, forget about it...Zojirushi all the way.
Id say Thermos and Stanley make similarly viable products like Stanley quadvac.
Bought my Contigo over 5 years ago, still going strong and swear by them.
The Zojirushi kept the water temperature 20 degrees hotter than yeti or contigo. You would think that the competition would be more competitive. Clear winner would be Zojirushi.
Hi! Thanks for your great video. Contigo used to be my favourite travel tumbler. Due to pandemic I decided to buy something more suitable for 'this time' and I ordered Zojirushi 20 oz. I think that Zojirushi mug is the most hygienic of them all.

Edit: -Heck yeah the heat retention on Zoji is amazing! I left a cup of tea in it last night by accident and it was still warm this morning. I also make coffee in it when I am in work and it lasts all day, I can sip, leave it and come back, all day long and it’s awesome! A straw cleaner is great for the mouthpiece too, but I find a quick wash with soapy water is plenty to keep it going. Probably my favourite thing I’ve bought in Japan :)
hey there ....you are really great, with friendly informed opinions and excellent real-world perspective :) thanks for the excellent review of these (made my life a bit easier), i already own a Zojirushi (love it, was a most fav gift from a friend) and will continue to use it (has the simpler screw on / off thermos top, easy to clean) ...but will be using it as a thermos/water bottle on my bike ...and now will probably purchase a Contigo to use around the house (as you said, for it's ease of use). subbed & liked !! be well & stay safe :)
I love the drinking ease of the contigo. After having one, it’s hard to use other products. The sheer leakiness of the yeti is a giant no for me - I’m not confident to just grab and go with it.
Hey! Just found your channel recently, and I enjoy the production value and the attempt to do things that other people aren't doing on CZcams. This video was interesting, but I couldn't help but wonder if you should have picked a Yeti bottle and cap that were more similar to the other two products (the Rambler w/ the HotShot cap, for example)... just a suggestion if you ever decide to revisit the issue. In any case, keep up the good work.

4 things on the Contigo: If I drop, or slip, while drinking, auto close, no spill; Cleaning the rubber stopper is a bit of a pain. Still have to do that when dishwashing. The top has the rubber which helps grip it. Lastly: IF you overfill, press the drinking button while putting on lid. This reduces the spillage.
The only thing about the Zojirushi is that if I am drinking and drop it, I have a mess. I do like that it keeps liquids hotter. I don't take hours to drink my coffee, but I do use cream, so maintaining temperature is a biggie.
Wondering: Does the Zojirushi fit under a tall Keurig? The Contigo does.

Testing Error:
You can not use an infrared thermometer to (accurately) test in this situation. These guns are affected by the humidity in the air from the hot water, and the water/stainless steel surfaces are the worst thing for them due to reflectivity and/or transparency. This is why you can't get a reading on stainless steel pans, but can on cast iron or Teflon.
Though the results seem reasonable compared to other reviews, a probe should be used.
I tested at home using my Contigo, infrared thermo, and instant read probe (Thermapen).
I put in boiling water and got:
-Probe: 95C
-Infrared thermo: 74C
A 20C difference!

This video is just so wholesome and pleasant. I'm buy a travel mug for a family member this holiday, and this review was just so helpful. I'm skipping Amazon though - direct to the source.
Contigo fits in my backpack's side pocket. Backpack is an Alienware one. I've also put it in my inner pocket of my jacket and inside bags as well and have never had an accidental spill. I have a stainless steel one as well as a purple one. The stainless steel has been dropped from many different heights and is beat up. I've had it I believe since 2017. The purple one is a bit newer, paint has flaked off the bottom and the side is a bit scratched up but it's still working as new. I've had coffee put in them before going to bed once and it was still warm when I woke up the next morning. Obviously this isn't a typical thing I do, just thought it was pretty neat at the time. I love them very much and have looked at the newer ones with a different type of lid then the ones I have (and is shown in this video) but my stainless steel one is 22-24 oz and that's a difficult size to find in anything. It also stays warm if not hot until the last drop most days when I'm drinking a lot from it, so less than 7 hours. I lost the purple one for a month and when I found it I needed to do a deep backing soda rinse in it to get the taste of what was left in it for a month out of it, but it was removed and is still useable. I think it's an 16oz one.
I looked at all of these and more. But the Autoseal fearure on the Contigo was the deal sealer for me. One handed operation whilst driving. And you don't have to close the lid like on the Japanese one. Plus, if you drop it or knock it over onto the floor of your vehicle as I have done, it does not leak or spill whatsoever.
I bought a 24 oz. one so I can have lots of coffee. I filled it up with hot coffee and 6 hours later (sitting indoors the entire time), the coffee wasn't real hot but definitely still warmer than tepid. This is a great mug. It's kind of long and narrow (which is a good thing for my cup holder) so get a good bottle brush and those fizzy denture tabs for cleaning (cheap dollar store ones work just as well for this).
Yeti is overhyped and overpriced.
Contigo was the first travel mug I got that I really liked and kept my coffee hot for most of my shift.
Zojirushi is my new favorite, my coffee has never gone cold during a shift.

Zojirushi is as easy to clean as yeti and holds temp much much MUCH better than both (the same goes for GSI microlite). Handcleaning the zojirushi lid is a bliss, no need for any dishwasher (same goes for real life imho - dishwashers are waste of money and electricity). Contigo lid is complicated. Cleaning it not to leave aftertaste of previous coffee is a real pain. Yeti and contigo loose a lot of heat through the lid.
And last thing: if someone is buying the thermos than heat renention IS the most important thing. Otherwise that person does not need a thermos. When I am removing snow from my car and I do not need a thermos I bring a mug of coffee and by the time the snow is gone the coffee (well - tea actually) is gone too...
I put my Zogi In the dishwasher. Never knew it was hand wash only. Doesn’t seem to have affected it
I have 2 Zojurushi travel mugs - one for cold water, and the other for coffee. The temperature retention is amazing. I can fill one with cold water, then leave it in a hot car all day long, and the water will still be cold and refreshing hours later.
The one used for coffee seems to retain a bit of the coffee smell or taste, and so I use it exclusively for coffee. I like my coffee really hot but drink it pretty slowly, so it’s really great to know every sip will be hot. I wash both the body and the disassembled lid in the dishwasher with very few problems. My husband’s coated stainless steel version is starting to peel a bit. My red and blue ones may have a chip here or there, but nothing unsightly. They’ve all been dropped many times, and even squished in a car door. Doesn’t effect the performance one bit.
Depending on whether yours has the slicksteel or the coated finish, I noticed the coated (matt gray nonstick) ones retain more of the smell, but if the smell is stuck on the silicone gasket/stopper, you can bake it (I think 350 is the temp in F but do look it up-other products specify to do that for parts with silicone gaskets that you make a multitude of things in) for around 20mins to get the smell out-important mostly if you forget and leave a drink in it that gets stinky (coming back from a few days away from home when I had to leave in a hurry, oof, no amount of airtightness can keep 3-4 day old coffee or tea from making a funk). :)

Ahh. finally a vid on comparison between these 3 brands. I always find that in a lot of products are simply marketing.
How does one drink from the Zojirushi? Because it looks like the sipping area is rather close to the threads. I'm used to the Contigo auto, and I can't tell how many times that auto sealing lid stopped a disaster in the car or in work. When driving down the turnpike, the contigo is great because I don't have to look at it. Contigo stops splashes. Zojirushi would not.

I like the look to the Zojirushi the best… I like that it appears slim enough to fit in the side pocket of a backpack. I wish it had one of those handles on top so you can carry it that way or by hooking it to your bag if the side pockets are already full. Only thing I would like is that it isn’t dishwasher safe but I guess that’s not a deal breaker.
I use the Zojurushi, I agree with you that you dont need that much heat retention for such short drink but I will give you one counter point is that, the Zojurushi is made for prepping. I usually brew my tea the night before my trip so I can just wake up and grab it immediately, the second would be the zojurushi is as slim as the average watter bottle which will fit in with almost every mold I have car drink holder,side of the backpack, easy on my hand etc.

You didn't show how zojirushi's cap can be completely dismantled for easy washing.
Contigo's cap difficult to wash with lots of hard to reach areas.
I find the YETI horrible cause it has such thick walls but the heat retention is just bad, it is so thick that it won't fit in most cup holders.
I have used all 3 products before and i won't recommend YETI. Contigo might be fine if you don't drink sugary drinks with it as the difficult to wash will cause mold growth that is quite a huge effort to remove.
But you can put more things that just liquids in your Yeti. The others are too narrow to put, let's say, an ice-cream

Yeah - like dice for example! ;-) Seriously - who eats ice cream while driving? Or when hiking...? When you want to take food you take food thermoses - like Thermos, Esbit or Stanley. When you want liquids - Zojirushi or GSI microlite.

For me, the ability to keep temperature longer is important, but so is the ability to tumble around in a backpack without spilling or dripping.
So from that trio, I would land on the Zojirushi.
However, having one of that model in my cupboard, I would now buy a different Zojirushi that does NOT have the flip-top cover.
Why?
Well, it works wonderfully until it breaks.
I have that Zojirushi and two from Davids Tea, that have the exact same flip cover. All three of them are now held closed by a bent-wire arrangement that my wife dreamed up, and that I've "perfected". It keeps the lids closed to preserve the thermal envelope, and is easy to open, but not tight enough to prevent leaks if the bottles aren't kept mostly upright.
The problem is behind that metallic release button for the cap. There's a pin, horizontally behind that button that goes through a couple of tabs on the back of the button, and also embeds its ends in the plastic of the cover. The button just pivots on that horizontal pin. The pin remains static, and the button rocks against it, held in place by pin-diameter holes in the tabs on the button-back. You press in on the bottom half of that metallic button, and the top pivots outward, releasing the hook that keeps the cover closed against spring tension.
The root cause of failure is that the tabs are VERY thin plastic, and very fragile, and when that button operates dozens of times per day, those tabs last less than a year. They just rip. There's no way to repair them, and replacement caps were not available when I was inquiring (around 2018 or so).
The Davids Tea 'mugs' additionally have a tea-leaf basket for steeping loose-leaf tea, and a strainer that can be used separately, so you can do a timed steeping, then remove the basket and the partly-used leaves, so they don't keep steeping and getting all bitter and harsh. You drink your tea through the strainer for a couple of hours (or whatever). When you've drunk the last of the first steeping, you just re-install the basket, full of once-steeped leaves, for another steeping of the leaves, remove-and-dump the now-used-up leaves, and drink the second batch - that doesn't work with cheap Sencha, but it's usually just fine for Gyokuro... but I digress. The main point is that the David's Tea flip-top bottle is an inspired design, and every part is well engineered... except for those damned pivot tabs. They are the first point of failure, every time, and over a few years and lots of complaints, the company never implemented a more robust material (there was plenty of room to make the plastic thicker or to use bent/stamped thin stainless steel for the purpose. I surmise that doing so would cut into repeat sales, so marketing refused a simple quality upgrade.
So, I looked around. Given the superior quality of Zojirushi, I anticipated a better experience. I would forego the tea-making / tea-straining parts, and just transfer my steeped tea into a robust Zojirushi, container. Imagine my disappointment when it turned out that Zojirushi had also cheaped-out on that crucial part, and the button broke off after barely 8 months. I might buy from them again, because those slim, stylish containers are wildly effective at keeping temperature, but any mugs or bottles I buy in future will (sadly) not have a convenient, single-hand-operated flip-top.

I have a thermos brand mug and I love it. The only issue I have, is it's too tall for my Keurig supreme Plus. That's the only reason I'm looking for a new mug.
The only flaw I've had with the thermos brand besides its height not fitting my keurig, is even though you're supposed to be able to drink around any edge of it, if you don't line up with the actual sip hole it will slosh down and kind of Hit the side of your mouth in the corner of your lips. That was an easy fix though because all I did was take a sharpie and put two dots where each of the sipholes are and make sure I drink from that. It's the best coffee mug I've ever had as far as keeping my coffee warm all day.
Would love to see a video about food thermoses aswell both the tall ones and the short chubby ones with big openings =)
I have the contigo and the yeti. Both are durable products and survive me taking them to work. I work as a tow truck operator so they get beat up pretty good

The YETI Rambler flask with the chug cap is probably more comparable to the Zoji and the Conti. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison in larger volumes, around 26oz. with cold beverages/water.
They didn't (sadly) go up against the Zojirushi, but another tester did test the rambler against many other bottles and it actually did quite poorly-ice cold (32-33 degree) water was already taking heat in through the top half an hour in when in a warm room; at 24hrs sealed it was one of the worst of 12 tested, same when they threw 207 degree water in then tossed the bottles into a freezer to see how much heat was lost... watch?v=a6j1NJkNzwI Their lids are acrylic, I believe, and it doesn't insulate heat or cold well AT ALL.
@@DFTBA. I have the Yeti coffee cup and the Zoji flask. The Yeti keeps you coffee "too hot" for about half an hour then drinkable for a couple hours (assume black coffee). The Zoji keeps your coffee "too hot" for hours. Even with the lid open it takes a while for it to cool off enough to drink. After about 24 hours coffee is still warm, not warm enough you wouldn't send it back at a restaurant, but warm enough it isn't cold coffee. The Zoji is ideal if you want a hot cup of coffee at lunch or near the end of the day. The Yeti is ideal if you want to make a cup of coffee at home, then drink it at work. fwiw.
I was rooting for my beloved Contigo. Yesterday, my third one arrived. The first two were 16-oz. and 20- oz. respectively. This latest one is 10-oz., which is perfect for me to carry with me to meetings, etc., so that I don't have to use the foam cups provided at the refreshment table. I love the spill/leak proof factor. That's a deal-maker for me, since I carry mine in my purse or bag. I do have to disagree with the reviewer on one point. To me, the Contigo is THE COOLEST DESIGN! I have small hands, so I love the fact that it gracefully narrows at the top for gripping and easy access to the buttons. Then I love the outward flair of the lid, so that the cup can be carried by the lid. Ease of cleaning is another important feature, and Contigo has that covered. Finally, I filled the new one with hot coffee at 9 a.m. this morning, and now, at 2:30 p.m., it is still warm, bordering on being too cool, but still drinkable. That's 5-1/2 hours. I'm not complaining. I have found that, with age, the heat retention lessens somewhat--which is another reason why I wanted to get a smaller one this time. When I went to buy this last one, I didn't even consider other brands.
You sold me on the Yeti when you talked about how easy it is to clean.
I love my Zoji bottle. Cleaning is easy because the top disassembles, its leak proof, and the water dribbles out so you wont drink so much in one gulp but still fill satisfied.

I agree about the Contigo not keeping coffee hot enough. I ordered a yeti with the hot shot lid. I hope it keeps the coffee hot considerably longer. I'm also considering a zojirushi because of the reviews I've seen on it.
I use a zojirushi mug like the one in this video. And I use it because I work nights usually 10-12 hours. And I need a pick me up around mid shift. So the zojirushi is perfect to keep things warm/hot for several hours later. U do not need to buy this if you are just taking your coffee to go and plan on drinking it soon. U will burn the shit out of yourself.
I have had the stainless Contigo for years as well and I use it daily, I am very happy with it. I initially made the mistake of pre-heating it... I couldn't drink the coffee for an hour. You can definitely have it retain the temperature for longer if you want.
I have a fake yeti, stainless and it's really showing it's age. The Contigo? Not at all.

I just sent that one back. It did not keep my coffee hot at all. With most vacuum insulated mugs like this, you don't feel any of the heat in the metal body. My Contigo for Keurig became warm to the touch after feeling it with coffee. I even preheated the inside with hot water for a few minutes before filling it with coffee. I had it one day, and I sent it back the next. I was very disappointed.
I agree with everything said here, but I'd like to see another round with Stanley, Thermos & other cheaper options that are still comparable. I see a lot of 'military grade' thermoses from noname companies, it'd be nice to know what those off-brand ones can bring to the table. Thanks for the vid!

I have the Contigo Autoseal, only used for water or coffee, the top has developed an odor described as a sweet rubber smell by some which pervades the liquid. This is not an uncommon problem, there are utube videos regarding it. I have used vinegar, baking soda, running it thru the top basket of my dishwasher (permitted by the manufacturer) and I can't get rid of that smell. Really makes me wonder what chemicals I have been drinking from this cup. Obviously there are reasons why it is inexpensive.
I own many contigo because they sold them at costco, they suck. After some use, they grow mold. Plus if you use anything but water, trying to clean them is just impossible since there are mechanical parts that you can't get to to clean. Usually a ring forms around the spout area on the tab that goes down when you press the button to drink and you can't clean it. Contigo is the worst one of all three and just useless unless you stick to just water.
You sound like a nancy, so you probably don't have access to a shop air line, but if you did, a quick shot of compressed air will blow all of the coffee snot and anything else right out of that lid.
@@1966johnnywayne Yep - airline to clean and perhaps sonic cleaner for hard to get spots. And then dishwasher 2x. Sound like easy to clean product... My wife has one Contigo cup. Never gets dirty cause she always uses my GSI microlite 500ml...
I had a Contigo with flaking paint and contacted them. They had me take a picture of it and sent me a stainless steel replacement at my specification (free). So try it. This was years ago, so I don't know if they will still send replacements.
I have a contigo but i find that the lid is hard to use, with slight arthritis in my fingers its hard to keep depressing the button while drinking and holding the flask.
Asking for selfish reasons obviously - would love to see a comparison between vitamix and ninja blenders. Is the vitamix worth it?!
The contigo I got is really pretty, it's the Contigo Luxe - so far pretty happy with it, the zojirushi seems a bit fiddly and ugly when open. Yeti leaks so that's a deal breaker.
How’s the heat retention with the luxe?
I used to dislike the contigo but now that it has a lock I might get one. I have a small zojirushi and love it for compactness. But one thing is I can't make coffee straight into it.

I've been using Contigo for years and it's perfect for me, my wife has gotten me thermos and several other other ones wich have complicated lids, pieces fall off and I can't find in the dish rack! No thank you!

How come you didnt have a thermos from the brand thermos in there? They are really good.
I don't like the lid of the Contigo-dust, sneezing sorts of airborne particles, clothing or bag fibers [esp once you've made the top a little sticky from your drink] etc can land (/rub off onto) where you will be drinking, and it is a whole lot of plastic that if you happen to drink anything with milk or sugar is a nightmare to clean-and I'm a scientist with WAY too many years spent in labs to ever trust dishwashers to actually clean something that wonky-shaped well considering handwashing even plates is better in most all cases.
I have a 16oz AND 20oz Zojirushi SM- model (I think SM-SHE for 20oz, SM-SA my 16oz; I drink one for coffee, the other for tea bc I don't want to deal with the smell that the seal will get on ANY of them and baking the silicone, while it does get the smell off if I accidentally leave some in too long and forget it, is not something I want to regularly do)... and I have had the 16oz half a dozen years or so, the 20oz 3yrs-I've dropped the 16oz one all over, had it fall out of the side pocket of my tote when I lean over to get something etc and I never have to worry about anything getting where I'll drink from and it's SUPER EASY to clean. I actually wouldn't clean any of the lids in a washer in general, but all the parts of my 16oz SM-SA model (I think you have the KHE here?) which isn't a sparkly one DID go into the washer often for a time (because my roommate would do it against my request, throwing everything in dazed back when I first moved to Seattle and had to share space) and was a-ok. I still cleaned it a bit more thoroughly on my own because washers won't get down to the bottom and if I can smell it on just the steel, the steel isn't clean.
Detail, though: the insulation material of some Thermoses will warp from the excessive heat of dishwashers, ESPECIALLY the dry heat. THAT is why you don't really want to toss most insulated mugs in a washer. The ones that are more costly use vacuum chambers (but some still have more material)... still wouldn't want to throw anything plastic, acrylic, or aluminum (ie hydroflask) into a dishwasher.

I have those three. I use the Contigo when driving because it is super easy to drink and drive, I mean coffee 😂. I don’t like the Yeti when driving because it may spill coffee on my face, clothes. I usually use Yeti in the office or at home.

Zojirushi hands down, they do come in 20oz and bigger. When things goes into my mouth, I’m all for hands on cleaning. Also zojirushi hold the longest in temperature. I hate it when people get to lazy and depend on dishwasher.

Wym different volume? The zojirushi has slightly more volume than the yeti. Perhaps you mean table footprint...
What ounce Zojirushi were you reviewing?
Looks like a 300ml. 360ml are shorter and a bit fatter-better proportions for my tastes.

The contigo is the winner for me.
one thing is ability to fit under most coffee makers.
You should have made a review on contigo autoseal transit. The autoseal 2.0, placing your lips to sip on lid where it is obviously exposed to elements. Yucks

Yeti seems to me a fashion statement. You proved it by demonstrating that it doesn't retain the head and the lid cannot be sealed (leak proof).
I can't imagine drinking coffee from a yeti with a lid like that. I ordered a 12 oz yeti with hot shot cap. I'm hoping it will retain heat better and is more ideal or leak proof. If it doesn't keep my coffee warm enough and or isn't his leak proof as I hope, I'll send it back just like I did the contigo. That Contigo did not keep my coffee warm hardly at all. I was so disappointed.
I'm thinking about getting a zojirushi as well though. I'm liking the reviews I'm hearing about it.
Been using Zojirushi SM-KHE48 for about the last 9yrs,and SM-TA48 for about the last 2.(As of 4/2021)
Only use these if you have a supply if cups on hand,as the thermos keeps liquids too hot to drink. (IR thermometer confirmed 9 hrs at least)
At the local Asian markets,the Zojirushi is usually behind the glass counter, while the cheapies are in the aisle
Both awesome until you drop it and puncture the outer wall.
Anyone know if you can use tinning flux and solder to seal a punctured outer wall?
Even if you were able to seal it, the puncture released the vacuum and it would never retain heat as before.
contigo's lid gets gunky and difficult to get clean even with a tiny straw brush.
That infrared thermometer is the wrong tool for the job. You'd be better off with a Thermapen.
I've been using that Contigo for at least 10 years, and I'm not looking back.
I'm 2 meters tall, getting the Yeti.

You've got the wrong cap on the Yeti.
IMHO Yeti products are overpriced. I own five Zojirushi products and all of them are well thought out and designed, built with quality materials and provide good value over other brands.

Contigo is abysmal in basic hot water retention capacity, doesn’t even last more than 1.5 hours.
Why does nobody test the cold retention?????????????? We don’t all drink coffee.
