WINNING IRONMAN 70.3 FLORIDA - race weekend and recap (+ a DNF)

- Miguel Mattox won the age-group race at Ironman 70.3 Florida, was 15th overall male + 3rd overall US athlete, and earned his pro card and a spot at Ironman 70.3 World Championships in St. George, Utah. Jenna had a different kind of day on the course.
Last weekend, we raced at Ironman 70.3 FL in Haines City. It was hot, humid, and at times, downright horrible. Follow along for an action-packed weekend filled with COVID-safe travel, race prep, and suboptimal racing conditions for two Northern Californian triathletes with very different race outcomes. The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat.
Lots of lessons were learned during the race, and after 18 months of no racing, we’re excited to have our first race of the season under our belts.
Special shoutout goes to Conrad and Alex Goeringer for the amazing footage and colorful race commentary throughout the eventful day. Couldn’t have done it without you.

ABOUT US
We’re Jenna and Miguel-
With humble roots as college swimmers and academics, we’ve worked hard to become two of the country’s leading age-group triathletes, and are now on a mission to become professional athletes and content gurus. We swim-bike-run together, eat together, sleep together, do actual work next to each other, and make videos together for our own enjoyment and (someone’s?) education.
Throughout our documented journey, watch how a couple of ambitious 20-something-year-olds work towards their ultimate life goals in a disciplined yet untraditional, not-so-serious manner.

I’m a simple man. When I see a Jenna & Miguel video, I watch it
A tip: you can watch series at kaldroStream. Been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Keagan Malachi yup, I've been using flixzone} for years myself :)
Win or you learn. You'll be back Jenna. Congrats to both of you for even being able to compete in these uncertain times.
So you guys work full time, train for triathlons, and produce great content all while still being awesome! Love this channel.
Jenna, watching you tear up almost made me tear up! We all have those races. I have no doubt you will be back and get that pro card!!!
I am not in your league, but have completed over 20 70.3 triathlons and 5 full Ironmans and I coach as well. You are both so inspiring. Congrats Miguel on an amazing race. You put out your goal and executed. Awesome. Thank you for taking us along on the journey.
this means so much from someone with your resume and expertise. we absolutely love sharing our journey and comments like this is a dream come true. we'll see you out there 🤙🏽
“Finish then vomit” 🤣 a conversation I’ve had in my head many times. Amazing video of pain sometimes equalling a great reward and sometimes not. Thanks for sharing your journey
haha it is definitely a thought every endurance athlete has one time or another. thanks for the kind words!
Ah Jenna, so gutted for you.. brave to keep going as long as you did with everything that happened.
Great race Miguel, you smashed it!
Thanks Ian!
Just Jenna and Miguel kicking ass as always. You guys make the best triathlon content, I can't wait to see what's next!
Congrats Miguel, it's be awesome following since I found the channel, and now a victory! And Jenna, keep your head up. You're an absolute BAD ASS and were right up there if the cards fell a different way. Y'all are my favorite couple online these days and I go back to watch your videos when I'm not feeling inspired to train.
OMG!!!! So, so happy for you Miguel!!! Woot!!!! I can't to see what you both accomplish this year! Keep it going!
We saw you guys at the beginning, before the race, great job!
What an incredible journey. I dont know you but am so proud of you both lol. Sub well earned. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos!
Just discovered your channel and subscribed. The run was brutal in Haines City. Sorry it didn’t workout Jenna. Congratulations on the win Miguel
Another great video, always a pleasure to watch these! A big congrats to Miguel, 14 seconds in front of 2nd place?! Very tight race and great to see coach race to keep up! Also a big congrats to Jenna, a DNF is always difficult to accept, especially for highly motivated athletes like yourself. Seems to me that the heat and humidity got the better of you that day.... I truly hope that your next race you can go all out and take revenge. Whatever happens, I am here to follow along that journey. Again, congratulations to both of you, another lovely video from 2 awesome people, keep it up!
This was a great piece of content. I was totally sucked in and couldn't take my eyes off the screen. So excited to see more from you both!
Congrats to both of you on a race well done. Jenna, I have been there with dropping out of a race. Definitely doesn't make you a quitter. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body. Don't let it discourage you or knock your confidence! You can win the next one 🙂
Just found you guys as I prepare for my 1st 140.6 in October in Indiana. Love you guys and your relationship, the most fun and down to earth tri athletes out there
Idk how I missed this video. Always my favorites. I know it was a tough day for you Jenna, but you always inspire us. Congrats on the awesome win Miguel
Congrats Miguel. Jenna, admire your grit. Great content, guys.
All had that race that blows you up, but it just makes you stronger and hungrier! Well done both, awesome.
That’s awesome! The bike was windy and the run was an oven!! I was 1306 and this was my second 70.3. Congrats on the win!
Wry proud of you guys 💪🏽. Jenna, you will be back strong ASF 🤓!! Miguel, you’re the man and pour some of your strength to that woman!!
Damn this was an amazing video!! You guys are very inspiring

Big support for Jenna! and well done Miguel!
Awesomeness thank you 😊 🌟!
Love this!!!
"If I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt". Don't know you guys. First video I've ever watched. You're still a badass. Its ok
Love your videos guys ❤️ Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
Nice video.. you'll get the next one Jenna, congrats to Miguel‼️ I was with my son as he raced that weekend for just his 3rd time half-ironman and he was having a hard time breathing too, probably coz of that humidity & hot condition. Cheers to the next one for both of you 🍻
humidity is a KILLER. congrats to your son for battling those conditions. we all learned our lesson that day to prepare as much as possible for less-than-ideal conditions...
Just came across this, amazing video and great work to you both! So inspiring! My husband and I are doing this as our first Ironman 70.3 this weekend in Haines City. The humidity here in Florida is a whole other beast and salt tabs and liquid IV or skratch are essential and even with that there have been long training rides in the summer that I’ve had to go home early from. Can’t wait to keep following along on your journeys!
So awesome! Hope you were able to prepare with salt and electrolytes! How’d it go??
@@FreestyleTri we both finished! Not the times we were hoping for but it was fun! Definitely underestimated the salt intake (thought 1500mg would be enough on the bike- sorely mistaken) and was cramping just as bad on the run but some amazing individuals gave me some salt tabs and electrolyte mix to help finish and I was good as new. Thank you guys for your amazing channel! You both are incredible athletes!
Great racing you two :)
Great work!!
Congrats Miguel! Awesome race Jenna! I was there too. I’m 40 and I did 5h1m on my first Ironman.
It was HOT and HUMID. The run felt bad...I really feel you Jenna...hard to breath...hydration was key...
See you guys at the World Championship! I’m stroked I qualified too!
Well done
awesome Raul! so inspiring to hear stories like yours... battling these TERRIBLE conditions. see you in St George!
@@FreestyleTri You Guys Rock!
Well done both 👍
Loved the video, I was there at Lucky's and you guys ran by us, I was the guy with the super cool American flag Trek. y daughters car is in the video.
how much fun was Lucky's!! so glad we were able to get out there
Amazing job to you both!! This race was not easy for me, for it being my first Half Ironman. Jenna, my quads and hamstrings were literally in pain around mile 40 on the bike too! I literally cried when I finished biking because even after all the training, I was hard on myself. I was thinking, I trained for this, why are my legs not doing what they're supposed to do lol I had to stop running at mile 6 and had to power walk the remainder miles because I was in so much pain. I feel like we had similar race experiences even though I finished much much later haha and I can't wait to do it again! I'm glad I found this channel. You are warriors, Good luck to you both!
So sad you had the same experience as me, Deidra, but so impressed that you made it over that finish line! YOU are a warrior!
Nice one. Well done Miguel. Better luck next time jenna
This is more than pro stuff u guys work full time.
Unlucky result Jenna, but you’ll be back with a vengeance next time! And congrats to you Miguel. Hopefully get to race against you in the future!
Jenna: That breathing issue happened to me there in IMFL in 2018 (It was at Haines City as well). I'm a big fan of you and Miguel. Keep pushing forward!!! Proud of all of your hard work.
Congrats and Jenna you’ve got it next time!!!
Team Jenna, you're great, keep up the work, you are a champion
It was great meeting you in Haines. Hard day, right? Congratulations Miguel, great run! Jenna, head up! (Funny to recognize you in the middle of the ride) After some great races, including Challenge Daytona and Miami, I suffered too much to run with an Achilles problem. Fortunately, I crossed the line to secure my place in St. George. I hope to see you there! Continue with the great videos of the training, the good food and the loving relationship. 🤙
See you in St. George! Maybe we can meet up for a shakeout ride or something out there
First of all, congrats to both of you for participating in our little event here in beautiful Polk County. I ride those same roads every day and love watching this event every year. While I'm sure I would have difficulty adjusting to the weather you have at your home, hopefully you also have some sympathy for those of us who have to ride/run in this heat and humidity every day. Speaking of which, I need to get off my butt and go for a ride. Thankfully it cooled down somewhat and should only be about 80 this afternoon. Have a great day and we'll look for you again next year.
Very impressed and feel for all of you in hot+humid places!
You know, the production of these videos is great. I’ll sub to this. It’s like couples edition of Nick bare.
congratulations!!! :D
Getting ready for my first ironman 70.3 in 2024, your vids inspire me to push more! Btw how the heck did you get food on the airplane looking so good xD
Amazing video… But Miguel, I HAVE to know where you got your sunglasses from :)
Congrats you guys roooock!
Hi guys ! CZcams told me that I would be interested in that video... I think we swam together miguel.... I was leading half of the swim course and then I did let you drag me a little bit at the end so that I could get some rest :D
Used to be a swimmer 20 years ago and just starting my 2nd Triathlon season ... I am a very bad runner and I guess I lost you right during T1 :)
Was good swimming with you, hope I didn't kick you too much haha :)
Cheers and congrats on your win ! Good luck at St George !!!!!!!
Nic - #644 at IMFL 70.3
Sick glasses!
Currently training for Ironman Maine 70.3, first race of that distance. Could you do a video solely on nutrition mid race, how you decided what to eat or drink, what you eat or drink, how and when you take in nutrients this is something I'm messing around with a lot and curious what you two do??
Miguel’s a beast
What a power couple 🙌
Of all the people on the planet, you talk to yourself more than anyone… make sure you’re saying the right things.
Hi guys! Great content for your videos. I'm training for ironman70.3 in october. just wondering if you guys could do/or have done a 'what we wear' type of video for training and racing? would love to get some input especially from the female perspective as i slowly progress my training for triathlons. thanks again for all your efforts!
absolutely! I (Jenna) am very passionate about making ironman more accessible for women, so we'll definitely add some content that's more female-specific. feel free to DM me on instagram if you have any burning questions right now though! @jennahaufler
This is my local Iron Man I just finished up at FSU I started running 80 miles a week there and have dreamed on racing this Iron Man ever since. I just started my career and can afford tri stuff now; I look forward to slowly transfer my weekly miles over to saddle time and pool time to hopefully compete next year (2022).
“Finish then vomit” 😂 so familiar or “finish then you can collapse”
Nice video
Congrats man! What is going to be your first pro race?
Congrats to both of you! Did I hear someone say in the video that they were going to give first to a virtual participant initially? What's that about ?!?!?!?!?
oops sorry about the confusion. there were no virtual entries, but my teammates following the "virtual race" through Ironman's app said it was very exciting. Adding to the complexity, there was also a DQ due to an athlete accidentally cutting the course, which is why they announced me 2nd at the finish (but I knew I had won!)
@@FreestyleTri Dramatic day! Thanks for clarifying.
Magnesium tablets might help with cramping. Have had it before at powerlifting competitions where I was dehydrated!
Great video! It was a tough day out there. Well done. How are you liking the EMJ team? Will Miguel turn pro now?
Team EMJ is incredible. so much love and support, despite my newness to the team. Racing the rest of this year as an age-grouper and will evaluate pro status after Worlds!
Great job to both of you! Keep it up and great content.
Go BTC! Get it next time Jenna. Congrats Miguel.
I did the race (won my age group and qualified for the 70.3 Worlds) but that run was horrible...waaaaay too hot...they apparently are moving the race to December going forward...great idea...
We might never race in Florida again... congrats on the W and worlds slot! We’ll see you there 🤙🏽
Any tips for packing your bike in a Scion bag to keep it from getting broken?
More salt consumption for those hot days! We all hate cramps 😭
Can you do a video of packing your scion bags for travel?
that might cause a bit too much PTSD for our audience (and us), but definitely expect to see more race logistic chaos this year!
Great video. Congrats Miguel. Do you guys edit your own videos?
Yep! We always film + edit ourselves, but for this video we had help with the filming during the race.
@@FreestyleTri that’s awesome. The editing is fantastic! Can I ask what camera you use?
Also, how good is it to have someone else to film when you’re both racing 😁
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda it was a real treat! we know we won't have that for every race, but it was great to have a media team for this big one :) our coach did a great job, didn't he? we shoot primarily with a Sony A7R III and a gopro hero9
@@FreestyleTri He sure did. Thanks so much for the reply ☺️
I smell a #BigDayOats ready made product in the future.....
😏😏
"like a sauna" hahahaha
Congratulations man! Did you get a slot to 70.3 world championship?
sure did! looking forward to St George 🤙🏽
Anything you don't like about your Felt IA? I'm thinking of getting one.
I'm loving mine. this was the first race on it so I was a bit nervous but I can safely say zero complaints. 10/10 recommend.
🎉
I just found you guys and holyshizz. That's a good video. Subscribe
Sounds like it wasn't in the cards for you Jenna, there's always another race.
how do you keep the body mass, normally I will start getting super skinny. !!!
Ice cream
Most importantly: how did you get your own meal prep food on the flight?
food always allowed (and required for us)!
Good racing, sorry to hear about Bryan who got DQd but would have won by 7 minutes 😎
we were very confused by all of that at first. Bryan accidentally cut the course by about a mile (unsure of exactly how much) ... so it might've been a 3-way dog fight. I'm sure we'll race again!
So, now the real work begins. 3:42 is your new target time
that's exactly right, Ed. always looking up 🙄
Need salt in the high humidity races
