Damn... the Voice Actors for this game didn't have to go THIS ham. I love it. Especially the breathy shop keeper who is REALLY into her job.

This reminds me that I was doing a stream series on this game and the snes game at the same time since I have also had a similar experience where I beat the snes game as a kid but never beat the remake. From what I have played so far the remake seems interesting on some parts but other parts seem to be very tricky. I will need to resume that stream series at some point to watch future game clearings vods of this game.

If you have the Steam version, you should be able to turn on Steam input. If you go to the game in your library, and look in the top/middle right section (under the banner,) there should be an option that looks like a controller, click on that and activate Steam input. After that, you just asign buttons to the correct keys/buttons, or find a premade setup if you're lucky, and you should be good to go. You just have to remember what buttons you remapped since it won't show in game. (I.E: if you remap the Right stick click to the Pause menu, or the Cross button (Xbox A/Nintendo B) to R1, the game still reads it as the original input)
If that doesn't work, or Steam isn't an option, then you have to modify the games .ini file. That part... well, I can't help you with on that one. You'll have to look on reddit or something.

No one ever said that the YS timeline in terms of the games make sense.

For those who have played it, how are the ys 1 and 2 remakes for the psp

PSP/Steam/GoG remakes of 1 & 2 (called Chronicles on PSP, Chronicles+ on PC) were my introduction to the series. It's a great version, but I will warn you, the difficulty in these remakes is possibly the highest of all the versions for them, mostly in Ys 1.
It has plenty of quality of life features, like 8-direction and 360degree movement options, while other versions only allowed you to move in four directions.
Ys 1 also has an extra sidequest and area (which was previously only mentioned in the game's manual), while Ys 2 has about the same amount of content as seen in other versions.
As for the difficulty I mentioned, that's mainly for the Ys 1 remake, which has two big roadblocks with the bossfights: boss 3 (boss in the mines), and the final boss. It personally feels like they designed it to be retro hard, requiring you to put those better controls to good use (at least grinding isn't as bad compared to the original version).
In comparison, the Ys 2 remake feels a lot more balanced with its difficulty, while still posing a good challenge.
In regards to music, very well done (if you're curious, Yuzo Koshiro, who later worked on soundtracks for Streets of Rage and ActRaiser) was one of the composers on the original games, so these remakes have arrangements of his tunes (and an option to hear the original PC-88 soundtrack he worked on).

Wasn't Ys 1 and 2 on the TurboGrafx CD as well?

@@starman6417 Yes, that was the other localized version besides DS for both games. However, the first two games were also released in Japan only on many other systems (NES and Sega Saturn, and even the Sharp X1)
Ys 1 also got localized on the Master System and MS-DOS... it got around quite a bit back in the day.
