- On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones orchestrated the Jonestown massacre, the name given to the mass murder carried out by the preacher and leader of a religious community in the heart of the Guyanese jungle.
Media outlets worldwide narrated, horrified, what the Guyanese authorities had discovered in the settlement of the long-considered dark cult. The members of the People's Temple, the cult led by Jim Jones, had just committed the largest mass suicide in modern history. 909 people were found dead.
The grim outcome for a community that, at the time when journalist Marshall Kilduff published an article exposing the dark truth about the sect based in San Francisco, was forced to embark on an exodus to what Jim Jones referred to as "The Promised Land." However, when Congressman Leo Ryan led an expedition to that place to rescue American citizens, the tragedy unfolded.
This is the story behind the People's Temple. A journey into the mind of Jim Jones to understand, through the audio tapes found in his empire, how the gates of hell opened in Jonestown.

@@lyshamay5951 Many wanted to leave, but were unable due to the absolute isolation of Jonestown. Miles of jungle, then one little grass airstrip which did not see much air traffic at all.

I'm reading the book, "Cultish," which is about the language cults use. To oversimplify, one technique cults use is "insider" language, to make members feel special and elite. As a young tween/teen, I was in a Christian cult that called real life, "Worldly," which is supposedly inherently evil. I went to public school and was made to feel like a weirdo. Thank God I escaped after 3 years. Scientology uses words like, "SP" = Suppressive Person. eye roll.

Congressman Leo Ryan was NEVER lured there by the ex-members of the Peoples Temple NOR by the Concerned Relatives Group.
The ex-members and the Concerned Relatives pleaded the US government for MONTHS to investigate Jim Jones and the People's Temple because their families were "held against their will" and they (meaning the ex-members and Concerned Relatives) warned the government that Jones was planning a MASS SUICIDE on all members of the Temple.. That's the time Congressman Leo Ryan started investigating Jim Jones by going to Jonestown.

Sorry but you are WRONG.
Congressman Ryan was NEVER lured there. Ryan took matters into his own hands after he read so many petitions of the Concerned Relatives group and to investigate Jim Jones and his people claiming the Relatives' families were "held against their will".

But the adults had their opportunity to leave when Ryan turned up. They all knew Jones was planning their deaths. They had followed his orders for too long. Humans are creatures of habit. They were programmed to follow his orders and during the 'white nights' they had rehearsed the scene over and again. They also felt loyalty to the group and the socialist cause. They all had proclaimed their willingness to die for the cause in the group meetings and in their writings. You could say they were all murdered because Jones killed Ryan and others at the air strip, which was the ultimate cause of the crisis. He made sure Ryan left Jonestown by having him 'attacked' by Don Sly. Jones had it all worked out. He would kill Ryan but not in view of the congregation. That way he could (and did) deny involvement.
But the surviving witnesses Clayton and Rhodes basically said that security wasn't necessary as the 'suicide' took place. So yeah, I believe they were murdered because of Jones' chicanery but they took the poison willingly all the same.

I was almost applauding for the great video but.......what's with the blurred photos and videos? Even in the newspapers photos were shown cause their quality is so bad that you really can't recognize who's dead on the airstrip. Or the videos....not so good quality either and everyone can find uncensored and without blurring from other channels.

Jonestown was about communism not religion
He was about control. Any pretext that would get people to do what he told them would do.
It was about blindly following someone. It was about putting someone at the same level as God. It's dismissing any negative comments that are made against your leader. It's about thinking one person is going to save you and the system is evil. You can't trust anyone but that one person.
