    This is one of the best videos I have seen on building a coffer frame layout.

      Thanks a lot! This is one of my earlier videos and I wish I could go back and improve the production quality a bit, but the information is the same. I appreciate the kind words

    Another great one! These are some of the best DIY vids out there. Great music. Funny vibe. And direct to the point instruction on what is happening. Not like other vids where there's some old guy telling a story about Pepperidge Farms and how they did things before power tools. Great stuff.

    Great project! I am thinking of doing a similar ceiling in my basement as a custom drop ceiling. Good idea to use a chalk line to set up the grid to get the spacing right.

      Thanks for the kind words! If you have a miter saw and a nail gun (or if you rent/borrow them), you can do this. In the meantime, there's lots more unique project videos coming down the pipe, hopefully with some improvements in production quality haha!

    man if permits and city codes weren't such bs I would love to redo my whole house like that, just fk it tear down all the walls. would be dope, congrats on doing all this

    The poplar (or any stock hardboard) will expand and shrink with the seasons. Since you only used Brad nails there is a chance the boards will warp too. That will reek havoc on your fill and cracks will appear in your finish.
    Best to use plywood or composite wood (MDF) for projects like this as they do not expand and contract seasonally. Especially if you are just. painting.

      Here I thought I was making it nicer by using hardwood. Thats good to know! Learn something every day!

    Wait… you took out the fast food benches? Even chase put those in. Missed opportunity! 🤣 Those are horrible at chase! But seriously brother that looks awesome! What was your ceiling hight? Wanna do it in my kitchen and have standard 8ft. Wanted to see if you had the same, and if it made it look too close.

    • @CityBillyAdventures
      @CityBillyAdventures  Před rokem +1

      Our ceiling was 8 ft too. As long as you keep the coffers fairly shallow, it will look good. I wanted to make the coffers deeper and Mrs CityBilly talked me out of it. Glad I listened because she was right!

    Can someone please tell me if I want to install a coffered ceiling, do I need to remove the crown molding that is in the room? If yes, can I re-use the crown molding that I removed?

    • @CityBillyAdventures
      @CityBillyAdventures  Před 2 lety

      If your coffers are going to run into the existing crown, I'd think you'd need to remove it. If the crown comes off nicely, I don't see why you couldn't re-use it.

    Looks great, quick question, how high are your ceilings? Thanks

    • @CityBillyAdventures
      @CityBillyAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! Standard 8' ceilings. I wanted to have the coffers come down further but I'm glad I listened to my wife and kept them relatively shallow. Any bigger would make the room look small

      @@CityBillyAdventures perfect!!!! I was trying to justify me doing a coffered ceiling in my 8’ family room and I finally found a video that I can prove it can be done!!! Thank you. I appreciate your fantastic work!

    • @CityBillyAdventures
      @CityBillyAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      @@beardedfishingmd5232 It can definately be done! Just keep it shallow. Good luck!

      @@CityBillyAdventures yes I agree as long as I use standard crown and maybe no more than half an inch of a lip to the bottom of the crown I’ll should be good! Thank you and again great job!

  • @andyanderson7712

    Think a coffered wall would be a bit much to go along with a coffered ceiling ?

    • @CityBillyAdventures
      @CityBillyAdventures  Před rokem

      That's a lot of coffers! A coffered ceiling is like an accent wall. Doing the walls too would take away from the ceiling in my opinion. But maybe I'm just not seeing your vision. That happens here all the time, until someone sees it, it can be hard to picture

    • @CityBillyAdventures

      Thanks John! Standard 8' ceilings. Shallow coffers go a long way with short ceilings

    I didn't understand the trick with the tape on the miter saw can you explain again?

    • @CityBillyAdventures
      @CityBillyAdventures  Před 2 lety

      So when you cut crown, you have to hold it upside down on your miter saw. Tiny variations in the angle that you hold it against the fence can make your pieces not line up right when you go to install them. Put a strip of painters tape along the base of your saw and hold a piece of crown at the correct angle against the base/fence. Draw a pencil line on the tape across what is actually the top edge of the crown (the part that is against the base of the saw since the crown is upside down). Then use that line to line up all the pieces that you cut so you have the same angle with every piece. Hopefully that makes sense 🤙
