  • My favorite mezzo soprano Marilyn Horne is singing Rossini's "Giusto Ciel! In Tal Periglio" from L'assedio di Corinto.
Quite possibly the most beautiful woman voice that ever graced human ear..
About the score: As you can tell I am using pdf files for my videos and there is no way to transpose the pdf scores.. So, some of my videos may not be a match.
I hope you can figure out all those scribbles over the score.. Some do match the way M. Horne is singing and some don't. But there is such variation in interpretation of this aria that I doubt there can be a perfect-match edition of this score. Specially if it is Horne who is singing:)) Also, I do not have the choir partition, but one cannot get everything one wants, right? :))
Gioachino Rossini : L'assedio di Corinto "Giusto Ciel! In Tal Periglio"
Libretto: Luigi Balocchi & Alexandre Soumet
    Giusto Ciel! in tal periglio
    Più consiglio,
    più speranza Non ci avanza,
    Che piangendo, che gemendo
    Implorar la tua pietà, etc
    Merciful Lord! In such peril
    the only course,
the only hope which remains to us,
    is weeping, lamenting
    to beg Thy mercy, etc..

The sadness, the sorrow. The depth. And the soul she puts in it.

Straordinaria, come sempre!

I was lucky enough to be with Jackie at La Scala when this opera debuted Beverly Sills as Pamina. The score was put together with parts from several extant attempts. I don't recall the names of the guys who worked on it, but it was slanted toward Jackie rather than Beverly. I have a Pirate recording done at the 1968 performances, and I attended rehearsals, the premiere, and other performances.

Is this from the 1972 recording with the Amborsian Opera Chorus, John McCarthy as the chorus master, Royal Philarmonic Orchestra with Henry Lewis conducting? The technique here is impeccable. Thanks for sharing!

to continue from the previous post,... Horne was the first choice for her role while the role of Pamira was first offered to Caballe, she declined, then to Scotto who accepted but had to bow out due to her falling pregnant and then it was offered to Sills. Mickelson had prepared cadenzas and other variations for each three sopranos according to their capabilities and what they considered showed their talents off best. The way it used to be done and fascinating too see.

The person that did the revision and nearly all of the cadenzas and embellishments was Randolph Mickelson who at that time had been working with Joan Sutherland and had shepherded Caballe's Rossini rarities album. The documentation that I have seen regarding L'Assedio di Corinto at La Scala is vast and too long to go into here.
