Thank you, Laura for your nuthatch story and the analogy it represents. The idea of understanding that the most important thing about any individual's life, is their story. When my mother died of cancer when I was a little girl, I figured out that (or imagined) that she died because she ran out of story. Of course, I got it backwards. But, while my family was a bit broken apart, there were a few stories. However, when my future husband introduced me to his mother, I fell in love with her. She was all about stories. My mother and her would have loved each other. My mother in law retained the family history of not only both sides of her family, but both sides of her husband's family from Bessarabia as well. Because of this wonderful sweet woman who paid attention when people spoke, I have been able to locate and document these stories. It was only a couple of years ago, that I realized that Elaine did not witness most of the family events that she described. She was too young. This means that in the precious few years that she lived near her mother in law, and her folks, that she gleaned and internalized everything from the stories that she was told. To this day, there is only one detail that I have not found to be true and documented. It is only more difficult to verify that my husband's great grandfather was absent from his home in 1884 Bessarabia because he was off playing the flute in the Russian army. But, I will find that too. Because, it is his story.

That was darling! Thank you for the lens of birds and their inherent qualities to liken our own stories to.

What an inspiring way to encourage us to write the stories of our families. We do have a writing group that meets monthly and shares our writing about our families. Only one is a professional writer, and she hares a 'lesson' each time. We all 7 have very different styles, and give each other lots of encouragement and suggestions that may help our writing. I will share your talk with the group as encouragement to them too.

This was so great! Thank you so much for your bird story analogy!! That changes a few things for me. I like writing the stories but sometimes wonder if it is worth the time. Now I know it is! Thank you for a great presentation!
