      Actually, in calculator logic, both are correct; The calculator has a priority for divisions written as a fraction, its treated as if the division was set in brackets, thus the result of the left one is 9. However, divisions not written as fractions dont get any priority, so the result of the right calculator is 1.

    From a professional math tutor: both are correct interpretations of the situation. Multiplication and division are essentially the same operation, so saying "multiplication before division" or vice versa doesn't really work. In this case, the way it's written is just ambiguous, and any good mathematician would tell you to use more parentheses or a full fraction bar to clear up the ambiguity.

    6:20 The left one (TI84) is correct, in PEMDAS multiplication and division (as well as addition and subtraction) should be completed left to right. For example: (1/2 ) * 2 / 3 = 1/3 or 4 + 5 - 6 = 3
    The reason that the two answers in the photo do not match is because the calculator on the right is significantly older than the TI84, which has only recently been succeeded by the TI89 (would highly recommend TI89 for anyone starting calculus, friggin love how easy it is to do finite derivatives). The older calculator is in fact working as it should, it’s programming makes the calculator give the wrong answer. Calculators are tools created by humans and often times can only approximate what humans do by hand, however as the technology and programming develop, the calculator can make these approximations with more accuracy.

      It's ambiguous. With no additional information, I'd assume the author intended strictly left to right: (6/2)(1+2) = 9. This is the way it would resolve if you typed it into Google, WolframAlpha, Matlab, Mathematica, etc. If the author intended for the (1+2) to be in the denominator, I assume it would have been written 6/(2*(1+2)) = 1. Either way, the author should add parentheses to make it clear to the reader what was intended.

      Since the 2 is attached to the parantheses(idk how to spell) on the outside, it needs to be multiplied first. PEMDAS: parantheses, exponents, multiply/divide, add/subtract. You need to take care of all the parantheses first, not just wants inside them, but what is attached to them as well. So the answer is 1.

    • @VLiteral
      @VLiteral Před 3 lety +1

      @@bideny2 That's not how it works. Since it's the 2 is outside of the parenthesis it is multiplication. According to PEMDAS, you do Parenthesis(what's in it) first. Them Multiplication/Division(left to right) then Addition/Subtraction(Also left to right). So 6/2(1+2) is basically 6/2 x (1+2). Therefore, it is 9.

Just because it's technically multiplication doesn't mean you can get rid of the parentheses or simply change them to a x sign. The parentheses stay until the multiplication is done. Then once you get rid of them, you can move to the other numbers.

    One method says you must completely get rid of the brackets by solving everything around them first, so 6/2(2+1) ends up as 6/6 = 1
    The other method says you only need to solve what's inside the brackets, then it's treated as multiplication, so 6/2(2+1) ends up as 6/2(3) = 6/2x3 = 3x3 = 9
