I have to say...this is def the best and most productive method I've seen yet the only thing I have to wonder about is saving and using the belly meat since normally most of contaminates would be located in the belly meat, unless I'm wrong.
No I believe you are correct, most contaminates are found in the belly where fat is stored, the head, and skin. To each his own and I think everything is ok in moderation. I'm not eating catfish every week, infact haven't had catfish for a long time now. If you have any doubts, leave it out. It def applies to larger fish and the body of water it comes from. It pays to check out any issues with lakes or rivers you fish, the smaller keeper size fish are tastier anyway, I think. Thanks for commenting, glad you enjoyed this vid!
Good reply... you are also right, in moderation it's probably ok... especially for smaller fish...yes thanks for sharing the viy.
This is the best catfish cleaning on CZcams, not sure why it has so few views. I feel like a moron for not thinking of using a fork to skin the filets. I'm going to look if you made a video on how you bleed them, I didn't see their gills cut, you must have a good method. Thanks for making this :)
Edit: Below you say "I cut their gills with a knives or kitchen shears and let bleed out in some water." Do you sever the connecting tissue where the gills meet the fishes head, or do you stick a knife in and cut the gills that are inside? Thanks!
Thanks, glad you found this vid useful. To clarify I will use both methods depending on what tool I have on hand. They both have the same result so it's a matter of which you prefer. If I have kitchen shears in hand I cut the gills in the center, cutting through the tough cartilage that the gills and gill rakers are attached to. If I have a knife it is easier to cut the very soft connecting tissue you describe.
I have a question if you don’t mind… can this method be used with bullheads as well?
Yes I've used this on channel cats as small as 12 inches, so you can def use it on larger bullheads of 10 inches +. Might be worth it to use this technique on those larger bullheads as as it's not worth it to save the belly meat on them. This way you don't touch the gut cavity at all! Smaller bullheads I would just sling and gut whole. Hope that helps!
How do you bleed your catfish?
I cut their gills with a knives or kitchen shears and let bleed out in some water.
