- Known as the city of Coal, Datong, China is not your average tourist destination. It is best known because of the documentary the Chinese Mayor, which followed a leader trying to reshape his town's legacy by rebuilding Datong's old town from scratch.
Datong is just a few hours from Beijing, making it the perfect spot for a weekend trip. We had mixed feelings about the old town, although the Huayan temple/monastery and Datong's new City Wall were rather impressive.
Further out from Datong, the Hanging Monastery and Yungang Grottoes are some of China's most important Buddhist sites, and the real reason you come to Datong.
We also discovered Datong's food culture and met many a friendly local along the way.

This is the first video of Datong I've ever seen on CZcams. I thought it was a polluted city with thousands of coal mines around, just like your mother did. Thank you for showing how beautiful it has been renovated recently.
pollution is the necessary byproduct of industrialization. China's leaders are well aware of that and they are actively cleanup and reclaimed some of the areas.
it used to be exactly that, but Mayor Geng truely transformed the city into a historic, cultural, and tourism center
I absolutely LOVE the contrasts that you can see here in China. I think that is one of the main reasons this country fascinates me so much. Another great video, by the way! Awesome footage!
Nico’s hard work...never controversial and doesn’t take future generations in order to appreciate it! :D
Stunning architecture, historical carvings, and good food. You have sold me on Datong. Adding it to the list. I would love to see your take on Qinhuangdao. Not sure I’ve seen a video of you all there but that place looks awesome also. Thanks Nico.
So many stunning scenery and interesting places in China. I am planning to move to China hopefully in 12 months time.
Can’t believe there are now CZcamsrs making videos of the little coal-mining hellhole I lived in as a kid for a couple of years. Crazy seeing so much of the city now become tourist-worthy
Great appreciation from a local like me. Such nice and friendly way to demonstrate its beauty. Btw the restaurant u went is one of my fav. The “meat” ball is actually made from potatoes. Haha. Hope you’ve enjoyed the time here and expect your next coming. ❤
Hahaha thanks for sharing! I guess we picked right then.
Thanks for showing is Datong - a city that I may never thought of travelling to
First time know and see Datong, it is rich in history and unique yet humble.
It's much more interesting during Spring Festival with the unlimited light displays at night.
You should try the lamb hotpot and donkey burgers !
I'm constantly blown away by your very rich videos. I lost count to how many times I watched your Nanjing City review, the starting music in that video is so great! Please if you can go to Southern Xinjiang, specially Kashgar, Hotan areas next. It would be really appreciated by a sincere follower of your channel
Yungang grottoes and hanging monastery are really amazing.
Dongguan is an amazing place to go to! You should totally go there next! I loved the tropical weather🤩
High quality video as always. You chose a good city: the transformation from the world's ugliest coal city to a reborn green touristy one is nothing short of myracle👍
Love your style how you include just enough factual background to the key sights.
Thanks a lot!
This place looks amazing
now this place in my travel place )) editing and story telling are great, as always)
Amazing video. We could appreciate you broadcast Chinese culture to global. Hope our country also can see this video.
Nice. I Went there the first year that I arrived in China, 8 years ago.
We visited DATONG AND PINGYAO in 2 days (1600km) in a very small and uncomfortable bus.
Such of crazy experience
Right now over there a lot of better , roads, buses, got much more comfortable
A high speed railway has been built between 2 cities now
@@leiyue1411 I really would like to go back there.
Outstanding attractions in Dating.

I've always wondered about that last temple shown in this video. Like where it is in China. Now I know.
So cool right!

What shocked me most was it was made 1400 years ago
没什么好震惊的!长城是2000年前制作的
Nice video! Next time, Jiangxi province, LUSHAN, WUYUAN, SANQINGSHAN
gosh.. this is so professional.. i wish you could have show more of that temple in the city..
Thanks! I do too but we were pushed for time as we were on a group trip so we had to run around to get the shots we needed 😅
Wonderful number of Buddhas. Love this video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m glad they’re restoring the traditional architecture and demolishing the Block housing in the Old city at least
This is a great video thank you
wow, Datong, it's the hometown of my grandfather, but I have never been to there. Thank you for showing me this city.
Hopefully you’ll get the chance one day!

another great video nico!
Astounding...what a change....!
Hi .I like yours channel .
Nice shooting and editing
这调色,爱了。有高级感
I'll have to add this city to my list!
Ive been looking for a video on Datong for years -it's very prescient that China is now starting to rebuild in traditional styles, and depart from the International one. This may well become a trend world wide. Datong lost a lot of money rebuilding, but in terms of long term it's an investment. The way the former city looked -industrial and poverty stricken (even its ancient city wall was just the mud left from the bricks having long been looted over the centuries), it had little hope of ever revitalising in a region that's China's rustbelt, where industry's been shutting down.
As a Chinese I really like almost everything of Shanxi Province, except for their food. Shanxi people are good at flour dumplings with flour fillings (somewhat akin to southern Indian food). Well, yes, there might be two different types of flours (such as wheat flour samsa with potato flour fillings) but still I except some distint filling such as some real vegetable or meat.
It is an amazing historical temple!
大同变化超大
I like the juxtapose of this city
I'll go there next week 💃🏻 i'm curious of Tulin Soil Forest
As you have got to Datong, wood tower in Yingxian and Mountain Wutai also would be in your list.
Impressive!
视频质量好高!!
Wow we were this close I'm born and raised in Taiyuan, Shanxi
Astounding.
Got a good documentary about Datong ex-mayor story, how he change the Datong city.
very informative
which time of the year the video taken? some snowy Hanging Temple?
been in Datong back 2016, too bad just for 2 nights :(
unique city with "new" old town lol
Nico, you look much pretty than before!
wonderful volg
欢迎来到我的家乡!最好的视频
Did you modify the color saturation?
The poles aren't load bearing. They are put in place later to make you feel safer.
Nice city....
哇,悬空寺
cool man
Are the sights accessible by public transport?
Love those winter jackets... whoa the ugliest city, that looks so beautiful. Actually, i love those cities that are so Grey. Those Buddhist caves are so majestic. I really love all those Grey.
Definitely not the ugliest anymore I don’t think but there is still a lot of working going on. I think in a few years it will be great.
There’re still lots of real gems in China you’re yet to explore...
"Datong ta tong tong tong" - Sisqo, from 'Da Tong Song'
i enjoyed this but for me it wouldve been even better if the sequence of the "frames" flow from one to the next. Often I do not know whether the shot is showing something that is a small part of a bigger place or just a spot. For example, Yungang Grottoes starts with a series of close up shots statues mixed in with wide shots so I have no idea just how big is the place. I also cannot tell how far away this grotto is from the main city. The shot of you in front of the hanging monastery at 7:00 is great as it shows how far away and high up the monastery is from you but we (viewers) are almost immediately inside the monastery and we missed the interesting bit of the journey from ground floor to the monastery apart from a short clip of a bridge and a few stair steps? Is there a lift? Is there a queue? Do you have to buy tickets? So many questions in my head !
Why don't you visit Guangzhou city
Along with Taiyuan, used to be two of the most polluted cities in China
come to Qingdao next time))
Yo! I'm born there!
recommend my home town' lan zhou!
我的天,大同都去了
👏👏👏👍👍👍
60fps plz!
镜头一直在旋转移动,看起来好晕啊~~~~~
Hey, this is my hometown
It was an interesting city!
DaTong was also once a capital city during the Northern Toba/Yuan Wei dynasty, it was known as PingCheng, before the sinicized assimilation of the Sabirs & other minorities
👍🏻👍🏻
I imagine the scenes shot on a dolly
Just a gimbal, our production level isn't quite that high yet... one day!
"a couple of decades ago" wow what a weird way to pronounce "around 2010"
when i think of datong, only coal mine but nothing attractive in my mind. i never been there, so i was curious that what makes you to go to datong at first place?
悬空寺,恒山,云岗石窟,往南还有五台山
👍👍👍😀
#rekanation QnA .
Only in China you can see the old and new together. In the USA, I hardly see the new thing.

The old town looks like Chinese ink drawings
For a man who said, don’t make me into a god, nobody listened
Great footage but please change the generic cliché music it clashes so much with the beautiful architecture/culture and is next level annoying.
🛋 sofa
Please go to Xinjiang 🙏 I am begging all the western youtubers to do the same 😁
Check out Nico's friend 'Goyvon'. She did a trip to Xinjiang
@@leiyue1411 cool 👍
