- It's been difficult to get to grips with Hellblade 2's previous reveals - the quality of the presentation is not a good match for CZcams compression. However, direct feed capture from Microsoft is of a much higher quality and we recently received the raw asset. So, this is what we make of the game's presentation based on the most recent materials and it's looking seriously impressive.

Incredible game, but unfortunately the IP is owned by Bandai Namco.
Ah, great ancestor of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.
Its not owned by Bandai it was published by them and IP of Ninja theory, just like Sekiro was published by activision and IP of Fromsoftware
The first game was so incredible when wearing headphones. It isn't so much the graphics that excite me. They did things with the audio in the first game that made me feel very much in her shoes and not to spoil the first game for people but I very much felt what it was like to have those problems.
VERY MUCH this. That Valravn sequence gave me goosebumps.
It's called binaural sound. The second game has it as well according to John Linneman.
@@cube2fox they put a lot of effort into talking with people that had mental illnesses and those that looked after them which really showed up well in the game. a lot of the input was binaural and questiong, accusing which is close to the experience of schizophrenia with a slightly lighter dose of visual hallucinations (which are much less common) - it was a good representation of disordered thinking that some people have.
lol that's the reason I couldn't play it. Too many flashbacks ^
Mentions audio first and then graphics. No mention of the gameplay. Hilarious and vey telling.
If the double frames are equally spaced out on the timeline of the original video files, you can be sure it was an issue with the export process.
Awesome video Oliver! I can’t wait to see what they do with the audio with this game.
Lumen reflections are a mix of SSR and raytraced based of signed distance field mesh or quality one using hardware raytracing.
A lot of games do this with RT reflections in water and I get why they do it (fidelity) but I wish they let you disable it as personally I prefer the lowres RT over constantly seeing the SSR fading in and out, its hugely distracting. The whole point to me of using RT reflections is to fix that and the occlusion issues.
SSR needs to die anywhere without a fixed camera, such as racing games. Although those suffer the worst occlusion issues when going under bridges so well I guess SSR just need to die period.
@@alexatkin so SSR is the software "baked in" lighting rendering right? and lumen is a mixture of SSR and hardware reflections.. WE need to know how much is the play within the mixture. Is it 90% hardware accel RT that's not bad at all. Either way, this looks like real real real RT a lot of it, DF can point out some Lumen use, but he knows too, the hardware RT used here, being pushed here, using UE5 as a base engine, is INSANE use of RT and UE5 implementation. One of the best UE5 games, we haven't played yet thoug

And these guys questioned its authenticity when it was shown, saying that such things can't be achieved yet on UE.
@@user-kf5qf4op1i And at the time, it really didn't. So 5 years deep since that video in 2019 and I guess we barely got any UE5 titles that match that quality at times. Tech demos is one thing, but making a game around that visual fidelity took years it seems.

Same, but the 30fps cap is a bit of a let down especially when the first game can run at 120fps native, albeit at 1080p. It wouldn't surprise me if they add a 60fps mode later on.

It’s not even out.
Really looking forward to seeing how they pull all the elements to deliver what they're aiming for with this - rare few games where I can remember so much about them years later.
The heavy grain will also make encodes look much softer unless you throw a lot of bitrate at it.
Heavy grain also helps to avoid bending.
Great video Oliver but, can you please explain why you didn't add zoom percentages in portions where it was zoomed in?
I cannot remember another video from DF that doesn't have them.
It happens occasionally. I don’t think it’s anything nefarious, I think it’s just an honest overlook. I imagine there’s a whole host of minutia to worry about when putting a DF video together, so some things are bound to get lost in the shuffle at some point.

@@jonmartin9732 yeaaaaaaa…

30 Fps is totally acceptable for something that looks this good. Crazy how much of an issue this blew up to be especially seeing that there are plenty of other titles running at 30 fps this gen that don't looks nearly as good.
@@weplayvrgames you stressed over a game that nobody on Xbox has to buy and those with high-end PCs will run at higher settings. Series X is old budget tech now no 💩 Devs had to use various techniques to run a UE5 game on it. PS5 got nothing to worry about.
@@weplayvrgames I just love how you're saying "quit crying" to someone who accepts the way the game runs, while moaning about that exact thing in the same sentence.
Each person decides what is acceptable. Personally I’d take 60fps with less impressive graphics. Graphics don’t impress me anymore. Last time I was impressed with graphics alone was probably around the original Bioshock and Crysis in 2007. Gameplay and story is what matters to me. But to each his own. If there is fast moving camera I get motion sickness from 30fps. Although if it’s a turn based game with a fixed camera like say Final Fantasy X then 30fps is perfectly fine but not many games are turn based these days.

100%, clear as day. All the tech in the world, but none of the attention to detail for the art team to 'put shit where it should be in fixed cutscenes'. Typical of 'AAA' in the last decade.
To me it just proves everything is rendered in real time.
@@darrenparr7948 Well you can make mistakes like this with offline rendering too. Avengers Endgame had Iron man infinity stone glove clip through Thanos hands. Everyone's PC literally breaks down.
depth of field over 9000
Can someone explain letter boxing?
Also, is the real resolution the lower from letter boxing or the actual 1440?
Letter boxing is referring to the black bars at the top and bottom of the image. Since the game doesn't have to render in these areas, you could say the resolution is lower by that amount.
@@SimonVaIe So the game is going to have black bars top and bottom? That seems crazy.
@@tylerochs5253 yes, as you can see in the video. You might be able to turn them off on PC.
The problem is effectively that the game is rendered at a different aspect ratio than most monitors and TV's are built: usually those displays are 16:9, the game might be 21:9 or something similar. The mismatch leads to black borders (can also be on the sides, eg. if the game would render at 4:3).
While it's not often that games do this since quite some years ago (we are pretty settled on 16:9 screens after all, so that's usually what games output at, not to mention many games can be run at different aspect ratios as needed), this certainly isn't the first game to do so. In the end it's mostly for performance reasons, they can say it's a cinematic experience (since movies typically have a wide aspect ratio as well and you often see black borders on TV's when watching a movie) but they reduce the resolution to primarily increase the performance.
@@SimonVaIeI’ll be honest, with how many black backgrounds there are in the game I didn’t notice. Hopefully that means I won’t see it when playing. I absolutely hate it with movies.

It looks incredible, I hope they added FoV setting on the console version.
I played the first and recall liking it alright for the atmosphere and audio, but gameplay wise it was pretty lackluster. I feel like this is going to be similar. It's got nice graphics and the story might be cool, but I just don't know if the gameplay is going to tie it togther. I feel like the game is so focused on cinemartics that it's going to feel like it's playing itself using the suggestion of inputs from the player.
Lacklustre to say the least.
That's just a different type of game. You don't have to like it. Some people are fine with a cinematic experience like this (it's still way more interactive than an actual movie). Some don't like it.
As stated below, it is just not your genre it seems, BUT, you do have a point in terms of gameplay (at least combat) which seems to be one of the parts that got quite improved
@@gavinderulo12 It’s a different type of game, yes - one with bad gameplay.
This genre defense where you basically say “look buddy it’s the bad gameplay genre, pipe down” isn’t impressing anyone.
The gameplay was mediocre at best.
@@citizen3000 and? For certain types of people that isn't important. I personally prefer a good and engaging narrative and characters over good gameplay. It's personal preference.
A game like Hades which only relies on good gameplay gets boring for me really quickly. While a good narrative and characters is something I love to experience over and over again. I've played through the witcher 3 four times and my favourite parts are the well written dialogue, characters, narrative and atmosphere. While I dropped Hades after a couple of hours due to boredom.

You'll love Fortnite.
The environment art in the first game often was like that too. A conventional LCD will sap all of the tension and emotion with a smeary blue-grey image and very limited dynamic range. A high end HDR FALD LCD or OLED display, a good set of headphones, and a very dark room is a requirement for this title. Playing it otherwise would be like watching a horror film on an iPhone during a picnic.
@@khs511funny enough both games are running on the same Engine
That framerate is so cinematic
I'm mainly worried that I won't be able to play the game because typically 30fps makes me feel ill. I might have to wait for a new gen (or until I can afford to build a new pc rig) before buying this one.
As an engine showcase this is fantastic and epic are doing mad work on UE5.
As a game though, not really my thing.
if it even could be considered a game
That's because unless you've been in Xbox for 10 yrs, you won't think this is a game
The desperation for content on Xbox has these Xbox gamers thinking this is an actual game
The irony of the hate PS got for only having 'cinematic 3rd person walking simulators for $70' and now what Xbox is making but in the least compelling way 😂
Xbox is such a failure. A proprietary failure
@@thedude8128so you didn’t actually play Hellblade then?
@@thedude8128the issue is that. That's all sony was making...this is one game vs every game they made was walking & movie like. Stop being corny as if ppl didn't start by saying "all they make" or all their games are walking sims" nobody said they don't like walking sims. They said that's all PS makes. Stop being corny.
@@thedude8128Sony set the bar for the walking cinema simulator, what are you on about...
Yes it looks nice, but I prefer gameplay over a walking simulator
Everyone is happy for you, luckily there are millions of gamers with more diverse tastes that like a wide variety of experiences
Agree on the softness, but if this is xsx fidelity, major kudo's for ninja theory for showing the actual footage and setting expectations instead of a bumped up version on a RTX4090. I am hyped for the game can't wait to experience this game, Hellblade 1 was an absolute banger of a game.
It looks fine, but the 2019 trailer just had so much more environmental detail and visually interesting scenery. At least this limited footage does not look particularly interesting visually. A lot more like a typical game than the filmic look of that trailer.
Oh man, I just realized I'm going to be in Thailand on a mission trip when this releases in my Series X. Have to wait until the 28th to enjoy it.
Nobody cares.

This looks so damn good 😮
This is the game I'm looking forward to most this year. It better not drop to 29fps or lower. Shit better be locked 30.
Unpopular opinion, but I love the filmic look effects. Motion Blur, Chromatic Aberration, Depth of field, Filmic noise.... give me all that. I use Reshade to add film noise and chromatic aberration for most games when they don't have it already.
My problem with this game is the 30fps combined with the camera being too close to senua. When I was playing the first game, I had to stop because it made me nauseous. Only after the 60 fps patch, I could finish the game lol
Then play it on PC? Hate to break it to you but thats the only way to consistently play a game at 60+ consoles are inherently limited
@@angryjoe98 yeah I know, that's why I said 'my problem'. Only got an xbox right now, cause the bitcoin mining boom ruined my plan to build a pc back in covid. I can tolerate the 30 fps, but the fact that the camera is too close makes it worse for me.
@@Caspianstrill i feel you
The developers want you to feel nauseous and disorientated while playing. Helps with the cinematic presentation and immersion
This game was revealed in 2019? Sheeshh
3-5 years typical dev time + COVID...not surprised honestly. I'd rather the devs take their time.
@@alb6678 I'm more surprised that it got announced so long ago, not that it is taking a long time to make
They didn't fully start development until mid-2021, so it hasn't really been that long.
@@gavinhillick If that’s the case maybe don’t announce it 2-3 years before development starts? The game has already had 5-6 trailers at this point
@@bigjigyeahUnfortunately, they didn't consult me on when to announce it.
I didn't expect near photorealism in games yet, but wow.
first Trailer was clearly Unreal Engine 4 /2019!! - so that could be explain the main differences fidelity wise
Watching people pull apart this commercial you guys made is rather entertaining. The cuts from CGI cutscene to character models is a little jarring.
Yet somehow they still compared the CGI model with in-game model of first game , these guys go through this stuff frame by frame so you know they seen it , clear advert for Microsoft
There is a fine line between artsy and fun, and so far i fear this game forgot the fun part.
Please, dont let the real time cutscenes devolve into a metahuman tech demo. It will get pretentious quick and feel forced. I can only take so much "oh look at how pained /scared /confused and angry i am!!(again)" That would not be enough content to justify a 70 dollar purchase or xbox game pass subscription.
With you on this. Pretentious is the right word.
You don’t have to worry about it. The game isn’t $70. I have a strong feeling that if this was a Naughty Dog game. That trash commentary wouldn’t been typed.
@@Gen_X_Gamer_79 Im gonna be honest, money isnt even the issue. I fear the time spent in the game wont feel rewarding. The latest Zelda games have 1/100th of the graphical fidelity, and yet i felt immersed because of the Game design decisions. I am very much a fan of graphical fidelity, but not at the cost of immersive game design. I have the feeling the world they are creating is absolutely not interactive. It will be a glorified cutscene simulator.
I was hoping that the next gen tech with the super fast SSD´s would result in more interactivity and that the CPU power would allow for innovative NPC AI, but sadly these new games feel like last gen titles that get 12gb of Vram to play with. I am very disappointed.
@@snakeace0 The reason you are not seeing any improvements is because Sony is the market leader. All great new tech is on the PC & Xbox. Cross generation was entirely too long. Sony didn’t cut the cord.
When the Xbox360 was the lead platform. Look at the games we got just saying.
@@Gen_X_Gamer_79 Im sorry what? Do you really think the playstation 3 was holding the generation back? The hardware on the ps3 was WAY ahead of its time, they simply didnt give gamedevs proper help to develop on it. Im a PC gamer, so i dont care for this console tribalism, but there is a reason i would only pair my pc with nintento or sony. And that is precisely because microsoft severely lacks in innovation when it comes to software. Just a reminder, Demon souls was a ps3 exclusive. And compare God of war 3 with anything else that was available on the xbox 360 at the time. Hell, even metal gear solid 4 had more innovation than any xbox exclusive. The only title that pushed boundaries was Gears of War.
In general the Xbox360 was the better console for most people. But at the end of the lifecycle,PS3 games were most definitely more innovative.
1:07 funny how he talks about perfect animation while the bottom most finger on the right glitches
VR version needs to happen
Wont happen because it's Xbox and they would rather manipulate they consumers with gamepass than make actually innovating hardware
I wonder how long do we have to wait for visuals of this quality in a gameplay focused game.
Horizon Forbidden West
@@ColdFear6666im playing that game now on pc and it doesn’t compare to this game. Characters models and animations aren’t even close to this and small details aren’t either. Dont get me wrong it’s really good looking but not at this level.
@@ColdFear6666 It's got great art direction but certainly not the kind of visual fidelity we're seeing in this trailer.
There's a reason games like this and Alan Wake come first. I'm guessing another couple years before a naughty dog style game (think TLOU), and another 3 more before this graphical fidelity is common in the AA space.
