Today I went out with my friend Kevin, a hyperpolyglot who speaks at least ten languages conversationally, has studied dozens, and is very fluent in several of them. We went around New York City’s incredibly multilingual borough of Queens (especially Jackson Heights and Astoria) and we (by which I mean mostly Kevin) spoke English, Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, Urdu, Tibetan, Japanese, and Portuguese.

      @zcpyoshi Před 3 lety +4

      O O give me an example of a language someone thinks is easy to learn. If anything, the difficulty of language you learn depends on the languages you already speak. For instance. English speakers can pick up spanish pretty quickly.

    • @sachio8610
      @sachio8610 Před 3 lety

      Yoshi Kim I didn’t say they don’t. I’m just saying that I have heard way more people thinking their own native language is easy, which is the contrary of what you said. I am not saying what they’re saying is true. We all know that’s false and the difficulty of learning a language varies depending on where you’re from and how similar your native language is to the language. I am merely just pointing out that people do say that and it would make sense since it is their own native language that they grew up with.

    • @zcpyoshi
      @zcpyoshi Před 3 lety

      @@zcpyoshi Really? Literally all the languages I have learned, native speakers always say that their language is easy. If I was to learn, let's say Mandarin, I would place my bet that there would be a Chinese guy would say like, "Oh, you can do it, Mandarin is easy." I don't know why you would ask me for an example, because I'm pretty sure anyone could imagine that.

    Notice how the Serbian woman was just dead on, waved her hand when he said he didn't want the food, and constantly spoke in English. As much as it is cool to learn and speak foreign languages , during this time as an Asian , many non Asian business owners have hatred for them as they lump every Asian as Chinese and so many lost a ton of money and face hardships paying rent and stuff. I know it may be hard to believe as someone who doesn't know body language, analysis of vocal tonality, etc. and is not Asian but it definitely is there. I live in NYC too and many times when I speak Spanish , instead of feeling happy and surprised, many take offense thinking you think they do not speak English and just have a general disdain to Asian people.
    This was apparent where I worked , there were many Hispanic ladies that did cleaning services and they did not like it when you spoke in Spanish to them. Often when I order from Hispanic food trucks I get stared down and I even heard mutters of "chinito" just few months ago, often times they charge more too. I remember a while back I tried ordering chalupas but the Hispanic guy in line made fun of my accent and his buddy snickered. Kind of pathetic because they were both like 5 inches taller than me and 50 pounds heavier construction workers in their 30s. I am not an SJW by any means I actually am fluent in Korean, learned basic mandarin , spanish, and now Russian conversation, just throwing it out there to support Asian businesses first during this time.

      Senzu You’re completely wrong about the Serbian woman. Serbs, especially the older generation do not fake smile or have the same idea of politeness as people in the US. She did switch to English, but caught herself doing it and started speaking Serbian again: ”sirom, meso i spanać”. The fact that she switched into English might also have to do with the fact that he ordered kajmak (fermented clotted cream) as a dish which made it seem like there were language barriers once he declined it.

      Idk about the serbians but I know this happens to me and my mom. My mom immigrated from Argentina so I grew up soaking spanish but we both look white af. My mom worked as a housekeeper in a nap and for ostracized by the other Hispanic woman for a while because they just assumed she didn't speak Spanish. When I try to order in spanish at the local shops no one responds in spanish even though they are speaking it to each other.
      It's a bit disheartening, I grew up with this language too. But my mom and I both get ignored a lot. It sucks worse for her since it's hey native language so it's far easier for her to speak it but she'll still get ignored sometimes.

    7:18 Portuguese and Spanish aren't the same thing. São línguas irmãs, até que bem próximas comparando com as linguas irmãs Italiana e Francesa, mas são diferentes. I am a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese and I can understand very well who speaks Spanish but the opposite is more difficult. Português tem mais sons fonéticos e uma escrita mais rebuscada que o Espanhol hahaha Awesome video, Xiaoma. Thank you!

A verdade é: ninguém sabe tudo de nada só o suficiente pra dizer que sabe algo. Yeah, I did it! Abraços!

    i think it's dope that xiaoma is committing himself to learning other languages, though i'd be lying if i said i didn't come to this channel basically entirely to see him speak mandarin; his level of skill at mandarin is so beyond impressive that it never gets old, whereas the other languages he's learned thus far (save for other chinese languages) are not only much easier/more common for foreigners to speak, but his level of skill will also be relatively much lower for a while.
    tl;dr i respect the passion and the studies but this feels more like a laoshu video than a xiaoma one, as have the more recent xiaoma vids in general

And I think my ears are shaped weird cause I couldn't get them to stay (even changing the ends). But that's probably not the ear buds fault. I seem to have problems with a lot of buds.
