    Hi James, I can't thank you enough for how helpful you are for many churches! I've been watching your videos to learn about church mixing and it helped me so much.
    I am a worship leader at my church and we started to broadcast the service live. I do have experience in mixing as I record music at home. But since our sound engineer and I lack knowledge in live stream, I am desperate to get some help on getting the right sound for all our church members, around 3000 members, to worship God at home.

    Awesome mix! Thank you for sharing.
    Some thoughts I had on the mix: I felt the drum compressor (especially the snare) attack times could have been opened up to about 50 to 60ms to give them a bit more energy and transient punch while "lengthening" or emphasising the decay time of the drum tone. The transient character of the drums really shone through in the FOH mix which I missed in the final mix.
    Also, I'd like to ask if you/your church uses loudness metering plugins to measure loudness of the outputs being sent to the livestream in LUFS (e.g. Youlean Loudness Meter or equivalent)? Or do you just kinda eyeball the levels? For me, I found setting the loudness around -16 (iTunes standard) to -14 LUFS (Spotify standard) was really helpful as a visual tool to consistently gauge loudness.

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the feedback! The idea of this method is to really crush the transients so that it's easy to get your mix levels up without having to worry too much about meters, which a lot of churches don't have, including mine. I usually prefer a much slower attack time for the punch, too.
      Also - you're on the right track with the loudness standards. I just don't have a way to measure them as of yet.

    I am late to the party seeing this video. But I want to thank you and say I agree with these tactics to get the streaming mix sounding its best - I hear many church casts that are obviously just sending the main live mix, and sadly it becomes distracting for this of us that recognize what’s going on. I imagine lots of folks at home just accept it as it is, similar to how folks accepted low bit-resolution MP3s in the early days of file sharing.
    I will be digging through your “catalog”, VERY much appreciate your straightforward approach to both mixing and explaining the mix. Peace!

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před rokem

      Thanks! I think a lot of it has to do with the goal churches have with their stream as well... sometimes it's to create an online experience, and other times it's just so people can not "miss" church if they're stuck at home, and they just have to deal with the inconvenience of turning the level up and down, and the balance is wacky.

    Awesome work James. What a blessing to us audio techs at this time. Any tips on congregation mics? Current issues here - meetings are limited to less than 100 people with 1.5 m spacing recommended. Do you think it's still worth trying to mix through some ambience or is it likely to just add too much reverb to the mix? I presume if using ambience mics then pan hard left and right and apply a fairly savage use of HPF? Any tips on reverb itself? Obviously excessive reverb is more noticeable on a broadcast mix, as is the absence of reverb.

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 4 lety

      Great questions! Any ambience is going to help some, but it's got to be balanced with the camera shots. If you've moved all your cameras closer to make it more studio-like, then too much reverb/room will create a disconnect. But if you still have bodies in the room, by all means, use crowd/room mics. It can be as simple as a pair of 58s at the front of the stage with a generous HPF. If you're adding reverb, make sure you miss it more when it's gone than notice it when its there. I'm in the same boat this week, mixing at a church that's never streamed before.

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 4 lety +2

      All your channel EQs will be the same for FOH and broadcast. The only way to weasel your way around that is if you have more console channels that you can "double patch" so they're looking at the same preamp, but they have different channel processing. Then send the duplicates to broadcast, the originals to FOH.

      This is a great idea. One issue we are having is the compression we apply to the newly patched broadcast channels doesn’t seem to be effecting that channels signal in the aux mix we are using for streaming. Great video! We (a band) are just getting going on live-streaming and these are great tips for our mix. Thank you! A couple of general questions for you. Is Facebook Live still mono? Does Facebook Live and CZcams do any kind of normalization shenanigans when live? In other words, safe to stream at peak -0.2dB? Need to worry about adhering to say a -14 LUFS or similar loudness standard when live-streaming? Thanks again!

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 3 lety

      FB live is stereo if you're coming from a streaming device, not sure if you're using a webcam or mobile interface. FB and YT will push down the level if it's too hot, but I couldn't find any information on them doing any other processing. So if you're aiming for -14 to -16 LUFS, you should be good to go

Another way would require a second audio system, but you could record on two channels the input and then the final output to see how different they are. I have a question ( a long one... ha) for anyone who might have an answer... I do live sound for a church and like most everyone we are now relying on our live streaming pretty heavy... So... I have been making a separate mix on a Aux and sending it out to be used for the live stream... Our video is going into a Black Magic switcher then to another computer where the combined output of all the cameras run into a video capture card and the audio I send out is then combined in the second computer where it is encoded and sent out for broadcast. I just feel like the quality of the audio is not good on the broadcast. I was wondering if I need to get a audio interface for the second computer where everything is encoded and sent out? I’m wondering if the sound quality looses so much definition because the a/d converter is stock and not doing a good job over transferring the audio to digital information... or is it just loosing its definition and dynamic when it’s encoded and broadcasted..... I would truly appreciate any insight.... Thanks!!!!

    • @matheusPMAVieira

      You need a reliable usb audio interface or a black magic device that embeds the audio into one of the cameras. That second way you prevent delay. Don't trust the onboard soundcard of your PC.

    Maybe I missed it but I didn't hear you talk about applying reverb. Do you and, if so, what and how do you apply.

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 3 lety +1

      Reverb or room mics are essential. When you're running live sound and you're in the room, the space itself adds some reverberant sound. We have to add that back in to make things feel natural for people listening on the other end. I'll add my normal types of reverb on vocals, instruments, drums, and then try and send JUST enough to the stream to make it "more conspicuous in its absence than in its presence." Basically, when I mute it, I feel something went away, but when I unmute it, I don't notice it as much.

    Hi James! We are using a Soundcraft Impact mixer and have no separate audio engineer to mix the stream sound separately. Is there a chance to build groups (sub groups for Drums, Instruments and Vocals) on this consol? At the moment we are mixing via an Mix-Channel (AUX) all instruments Pre-Fade and the vocals Post-Fade. We added some compression on that Mix-Output and I think it sounds not that bad, but sometimes the drums are "smashing" the compressor to hard. Do you have any ideas how this could be improved on that kind of mixer?

    • @AttawayAudio

      If you have groups on your console, try grouping things and compressing the groups and then sending that to a mono matrix for your TV output. Aloha from Hawaii!
    I had a question about this. Our church is currently working with a Qu-32, and we are currently using Mix 5-6 that sends the feed to Matrix, then to our livestream.
    We initially set it up this way so that the Matrix could be the overall master on the mix, and so that we could add additional compression if needed.
    After watching your video, we have been trying to figure out if we should use Groups to separate the vocals from instruments, or if we should just use DCA. The only problem with using DCA, is that we are unable to add additional compression to a select group of faders if needed.
    We found out that on a Qu-32, Groups acts more like a Mix, which sends a signal to either LR or a Mix; like Mix 5-6. We were hoping to go from:
    Mix 5-6 > Groups 1-2(vocals) & 3-4(instruments) > Matrix
    Just not sure if this is the correct path for this specific board. We were hoping to get your advice or a better solution on this, if you’re familiar with this board.

      I would set it up sending vocals to a group, instruments to a group, drums to a group, send those groups to the matrix.

    Live stream audio goes beyond tricky especially when using the same mixer for both. I use an Allen & Heath SQ7 but have2 different mixes, on for FOH and the other for live streaming. A big disadvantage that I've found doing it this way is in the EQ. Right now the way it's set up has a common pre fade eq that affects both the FOH and live stream. Effects are a challenge this way as well. I'd like some light reverb to give the live stream some space but the effects for FOH and live stream fight and begin cycling. Again, right now it's one or the other for effects. I've been experimenting with room mics and that seems to (obviously) bring in room noise and actual room reverb. The sanctuary is octagonal shaped with an extremely high ceiling and no acoustic treatments in the room so natural reverb is already there. Any experience with this board? I've been running it for almost 2 years but I'm an old analog guy and honestly haven't scratched the surface on it. Enjoyed the ideas. Keep them coming!

      Love the SQ series. Plenty of flexibility without being confusing. Have you tried doing some test mixes with Virtual Sound Check and a private live stream to iterate and check your mix on other devices? That can help you dial in the trickier things like effects.

I feel like the signals really hot coming into the irig I’m using a xlr cable. what output do you think I should come out of the x32 with? Should I create a different bus mix specifically for the irig? And if I do so will it still run all the dynamics eq and efx that are set for each channel? In case you haven’t noticed I’m new to the x32 and it’s hard to find a resource for this situation.

      No problem! Most all of us are on the learning curve right now. The channel processing on your input channels will be the same going to your buses. If you use a second bus for the iRig, you can use that bus master fader to fine-tune the level going to the iRig. And just checking - you've got the input level all the way down on the iRig?

      I'd keep the iRig's input level down and get it fine-tuned with the X32. If you can't see the input meter on the phone's input, you might have to use virtual sound check (or even a recorded stereo mix) and either record a video with the phone internally, or try a private stream on CZcams to check it. Hope this helps!

    Hi bro,
    I have question for you...pl help me
    We have tried our church first livestream last week.
    We faced sound quality problem in the live stream
    please read and give your suggestion...
    We have a audio system in the church and its 4..5 years old and working fine for the church hall audio and good.
    ( Yamaha 16 XU analog mixer, Lexicon reverb unit, Behringer 32 channel EQ, QSC power amp mounted on rack).
    Inside the church the sound i s good and happy with it..
    The questions i need your help...
    1. I have connected the Yamaha 16 XU Mixer Headphone out to the camera mic input for sound
    2. But this gives lot of sound problem since the mixer headphone out is not a EQ out..while what we hear inside church is clean audio. The audio for live stream is not clean one, becoz its taken from the mixer headphone jack and not from the out put of the EQ. Will you pl suggest a ideal set up for me.. (Suppose if i take the out put spare jack of the Behringer EQ unit it will be line level signal and a mic level signal)
    please give a advice.

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 3 lety

      You'll need another professional level output, not a headphone output. The headphone jack is speaker level, so it's a little different. If you could come off the stereo output's 1/4" jacks into a Y-cable going to your camera's 1/8" input, that'd be a cleaner signal than the headphone jack.

    • @AttawayAudio

      It could be that your speakers are too bright, so you don't have to add much top-end to get the clarity live, but over the stream, it feels dull. You could boost the top end on your EQ for the stream to try and get it to match better, or address the tuning of your live speakers.
