My Father (God rest his soul) rang his dad or vice versa every single day at 6 a.m. while Grandpa was alive. They prayed the Our Father, The Hail Mary, and the Glory Be and then hung up. No hello or goodbye or chat. This happened up til Grandpa's passing at 93.

@@CatholicTalkShow It seemed so simple at the time but I see now, very powerful. Dad was devastated when he lost his father. He said he had more time to get to know him, so the older he was the greater the loss.

@@jimcallahan9346 Thanks for your kind reply. I never realised growing up how special the unwavering faith of my father and both grandfathers was. (Grandmas too but they died earlier) It was part of our family identity going back for centuries. French Canadian and Irish. Tho Dad and Grandpa weren't very much alike, the family faith bond held it together. Nobody's perfect but the older men in my family were rock solid in their leadership and example as Catholic men. I'm only appreciating it as I myself grow older. Blessings to to you Jim.

4. Have self discipline-- practice asceticsm

1. Go to church every week
2. In your speech, do not swear, use crude "locker room language", belittle others, or use insulting nicknames, since names are what we give in baptism and therefore are holy.
3. Be honest in all your dealings. If you are a businessman, pay your workers a fair wage and always pay your debts.
4. Be faithful to your wife.
5. Don't be in a Las Vegas hotel room with an "adult" performer while your wife is home with your newborn.
Ngl, that last one is very specific.

my father used to be a member of the LEGION OF MARY . hE ws also the treasurer. he made us the family say the rosaryeery night . if we hd guests, they just sit and wait till we finished praying. thats the kind of man he was. Crying in the chapel. we werent rich and struggled a lot. My father told us he spent many days in the chuch crying because he couldnt do better for his family ..But he also said he woudlnt be able to make it without Gods help and his prayers

I think an episode on the Knights would be great! The Knights embody many of the principles that the guys were talking about today, and many college councils have completed Exodus 90! I think giving Catholic men an organization to be able to join right when they come to a new parish is essential to them staying in the parish and staying in the Faith! The Knights of Columbus are great for that!

When you have good men leading the way a lot comes naturally.
The biggest take away that I've noticed is that "holiness" is really just 'work'. Work being focused effort on something that is seemingly simple OR difficult and really doesn't have anything to do with human connection or emotion in the immediate sense. It's sacrificial in the sense that you deny your pleasure in order that things are in organized and efficient. Later on down the road you gain pleasure from the satisfaction of knowing that because you did your work, you alleviated sin from the world. (ex. someone telling you that without you they wouldn't know what to do)
There is a reason why Saint Benedict, founder of Monasticism, requires Abbots (Leaders of the Monastery) to always have their monks buried in work. Even praying is work! It's concentrated effort directed toward God and it's not always gratifying in the immediate sense. It can really just feel like a strained effort to focus on God, even for Jesus himself, who had to contend with Satan while in human form.

My Diocese Bishop (His Excellency Bishop Olmsted), has written books and continuously works for bringing men to become what we need to become. I love Bishop Olmsted and I am very grateful for his guidance. Also, I appreciate that he invited the FSSP to come to Phoenix. Without him I would not know the Extraordinary form.

I started Attending FSSP Masses ,and I love it .I live I Houston Tx
I have heard Bishop Omsted is very traditional. My husband and I are starting to become snowbirds from Minnesota to Arizona for a month in the winters. I'm sure Bishop Olmsted is working on it, but I tried three parishes in that diocese before I found one that actually began Mass with the Penitential Act. The others skipped it. In one small town on the east side (I'll keep it anonymous here) the priest held up the host and then tossed in the ciborium like an unwanted cookie. I was pretty appalled and don't plan to go back there.
Olmsted has not written any books, just long rambling "exhortation" papers that probably seem like books. He and his staffers refuse to acknowledge that parishes have become boring uninteresting places that provide NO social help for young men to learn the virtues of volunteering and contributing to the social life of a parish, NO social help for single Catholics to meet and form couples. I refuse to accept the "advice" of this video and others that "men need to learn how to act like men". That's actually a very feminist attitude. There are plenty of good Catholic men, but the Church no longer wants good Catholic men.

I've been waiting my entire life for someone to invite me to a mission for Christ. Still waiting. I'm not a leader. I waiting to be led by a leader who knows where he's going.
I'm trying to lead my wife to become Catholic. I was in Cub Scouts and then Boy Scouts, and I quit back in 1994 when everyone hit puberty and the leadership just disappeared on us.
The line I was fed when I told the guy over the pack masters that I was leaving was, "If you leave you will take your good example away from the others." I wonder if I had stayed if my example would have influenced anyone. I wonder if I would have survived the experience.
The part about circumstances is so spot on. When I got out of the military I became more of a lazy person when I didnt have that structure and necessity to push me.
What people needs is to learn the lives of saints and understand the continuity that God wants us to accomplish! Most of time it requires a miracle for a man to be really catholic! Like Alec Guiness's convertion and then his family!

Honestly, the very best thing that a Catholic man can do today is watch the Catholic Talk Show. I'm not even scratching backs here. This apostolate is so necessary; as an authentic source of secondhand fraternity; as an effective antidote to this toxic, anti-Francis, pseudo-masculine Trad-bro movement; as a grounded and sincere approach to a thoroughly orthodox formulation of Catholicism. Without you guys, I wouldn't be nearly as comfortable discussing my faith in public - not so much from shame, but from this exclusive sort of false piety. I love that your show is immune to that type of empty sentimentality. The most hardcore atheists can watch this show, and they would find it hard not to appreciate the genuine relationship you guys have to the faith, despite their personal defiance of the subject matter. That's an example to be followed by every Catholic. It breaks down barriers. It lifts the spirit. It inspires as much devotion as it does curiosity. You guys have done so much good with this thing that you wouldn't believe. It's such a blessing, guys. It really is. Now, don't let it go to your heads!!! Peace be with you, fellas.

At dawn today! What a treat!
One huge, and Biblical, advantage that Catholics have over protestants is that Catholics address a priest as 'Father'. The church is a family, and the spiritual leaders should be 'fathers', i.e. love-filled leaders who serve.
Just reread Brave New World and I was struck by the parallel of this conversation and with the conclusion of that book. The Savage goes to the lighthouse as an attempt at acsetism; to escape the hedonistic, ever-"happy" civilization. Like a desert father. But he ultimately fails in a way that I find difficult to process. The civilization doesn't respect his martyrdom so they hound him and laugh at him and continually tempt him. That is a very real danger I think, when the culture becomes so accustomed to comforts that it can't even see the value of a penitent life. If the Savage had had a Catholic example of Christ to sustain him he may have been able to persevere, but maybe not. Maybe an ascetic needs the support of a civilization that respects his sacrifice. Maybe truth cannot be pursued purely as an individual value.
Parish level weekly prayer for the parish congregation and neighborhood. Including parish priest and parish council and ministries in the parish.
2. Recommend to establish semi-annual national level prayer of repentance for sins of present and past generations in the land: during Lent & Advent. Followed by imploring GOD'S protection, guidance, blessings upon the land, upon the people, upon all undertakings to entrust into GOD Almighty's Hands. Holy Rosary and St.Michaels prayer.
There are NOT many men in the 25-35 year old age bracket living a deeply Catholic lifestyle. Maybe you guys should start matchmaking your listeners!

How do you balance the line between kids being inspired to go to church and kids only going because parents tell them to?
Excellent question! The topic of kids could actually be a whole episode.
I wish all the men in my diocese would do Exodus 90.
Even the ones who claim “authentic manhood” frequently come off as insecure, arrogant, rigid, and lacking humility and emotional intelligence, and speak down to women and other men (who might be perceived as weaker, quieter, etc). I’d gladly follow or submit to a man if he is secure in himself and his faith. And the center of being a Catholic man is to spend lots of time with Jesus & Mary.

Sorry Dude , but , as a VVA I do not respect member my age who dodged the military draft during the Vietnam War. I was called up for active duty I enlisted . And after training went to Vietnam. I was injured there. I have no respect for those who sold their manhood cheap.
It may seem unfair that you got injured in a war that others were supposed to have joined you in, but I would suggest that your thought pattern here seems vengeful.
The draft is fundamentally the government claiming ownership over your body and enslaving you to fight for them. You might say it’s not slavery because you wanted to fight for your country, but does that sentiment of yours alter the basic dynamic of the state demanding ownership over your body?

unfriekn, yes. I get that. But if they really want to help spread information, it would be better to at least make the main points early. Some of us don't have the leisure time they do.
I buy my clothes at a Dollar General, Pick up a Carhart, winter coat , boom dockers , a military watch cap. I have church clothes. I will not spend more then 20 dollars on my self. I have my tools and fishing and hunting gear.

Another problem with men that has occurred to me over the past year has been the large number of so-called "mama's boys." There are a lot of them. I think that the cause of the problem is that some 60% of boys in the US are raised by single mothers. It's not that the mothers are doing a bad job, but emotionally, the mother and the son are all wrapped up in each other, and more increasingly, they don't want to separate. The mama's boy is typically a man with low social skills, someone who might not make it in the world of work, as well as not developing a relationship with a woman other than his mother. I guess the all-time horror story mama's boy has to be the Norman Bates character in the movie "Psycho," and a lot of men who commit these big crimes (mass shootings, murders, etc.) are mama's boys, males who are isolated through lack of social skills, although most mama's boys do not resort to murder or violence.
Luckily, the Holy Spirit knew we would have this problem of the prevalence of mama's boys and put a prominent example of a mama's boy in the Bible and the three steps that are needed to remedy this problem. I'm talking about Jacob, who started out as a mama's boy, but ended up as one of the most important people who's ever lived. The family of Rebecca and Isaac was the original dysfunctional family, each living in separate tents--Rebecca with Jacob and Isaac with Esau. Jacob spent most of his time in the tent with his mother, cooking stews and such. Probably the most humiliating point and sad point in Jacob's life was when he and Rebecca stole the Father's blessing. Very sad, because each child wants the father's blessing. But the incident was also a turnaround point in Jacob's life because then Esau was coming to get him, and would have probably killed Jacob, so Jacob had to get out of Dodge. He had to separate from his mother. If it hadn't been for Esau coming to "get him," Jacob would have spent the rest of his life in the tent with his mother. So that's step one: separation from the mother.
Then a hard time ensued for Jacob under Leben, who was able to whip Jacob into shape. I don't think that Leben ever even liked Jacob. When Jacob appeared at his doorstep, I can imagine what must have been going through Leben's head: "Great. My sister has sent me her sissy son. Another mouth to feed--and he better not try to get my daughters, or I'll kill him before Esau gets the chance." It would have been better if Jacob had a loving father, but, like many boys today, he did not. So Jacob had Leben, and like many mama's boys today, he experienced a hard time trying to adjust to a life outside his mother's sphere. So Jacob's experience under Leben constitutes Step Two that the Holy Spirit has given us in the reform of the mama's boy: leadership from some other men, and hopefully companionship and emotional support, although, like many mama's boys out in the world, the companionship and emotional support never happens. Probably the most humiliating day that Jacob had under Leben was his own wedding day--when he thought he was marrying the love of his life, Rachael. But he was tricked into marrying Leah instead, and Leben and all of the wedding guests, even including Rachael, were laughing at him.
But Jacob managed to hang in there and become a man. How? The answer to that question involves Step 3 in the remedy the Holy Spirit has given for mama's boys: a woman who turns him on and who isn't too easy to get. In Jacob's case, Rachael.
I was recently reminded of mama's boys by a recent story in the news. The Q Anon Shaman was recently denied bail and must remain in jail until his trial. The Shaman, Jacob C., had proposed that he be released under the supervision of his mother, who would be responsible for his actions while awaiting trial. But the Judge didn't believe this. You'll recall that Shaman Jacob's (Shaman Jacob as opposed to his Biblical namesake, Bible Jacob) mother had recently been in the news when she filed complaints that Shaman Jacob needed organic foods in prison so he wouldn't get sick. (He got the organic foods.) So, at this point, I'm thinking "mama's boy" regarding Shaman Jacob. But Step One in the Holy Spirit's plan for mama's boys has already begun for Shaman Jacob: separation from the mother. Now Step Two will ensue for Shaman Jacob, being in companionship with other men. It's too bad it had to happen this way for Shaman Jacob by being in jail. His experiences will probably be as unpleasant as those of Bible Jacob under Leben. Then, if Shaman Jacob makes it through this, he needs Step Three, a woman who turns him on and isn't too easy to get.
Another mama's boy story: recently a woman I work with told me that her son had been accepted at a university down in Kentucky and that the two of them would be moving down there in the fall together. She has been a single mother all his life. So this 17-year-old boy is moving off to go to college--with mother. The two of them plan to get an apartment together.

The Biblical foundation for the fatherhood of elders (priests) is found, for instance, in 1 Tim 3:4,5: 'He (an elder) must manage his own family well and have children who are submissive and respectful in every way.
For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?'
I would say, as a protestant, that protestant fathers should go to church just like Catholic fathers should. And if they do, the blessed results will be the same. I accept with sadness that many protestant fathers also forsake their God-given calling as fathers.

Which church in San Diego has a men’s group? I think my husband might be interested.
They should go to church together with their family. Not just say:"my wife goes for me too". Everybody goes to church for themselves. Nobody can go in your behalf.
They should be good example to their children. Not be outside smoking. I know some fathers who come to talk about first Comunion, Comfirmation of their children and then wait outside of the church because the Mass is now and he won't atend.
I've known amazing chatolic men who were a great example of how to respect a woman and how to show to, not just their children, but to all children, how to be a good, decent, hardworking man who prays Rosary and blesses their children. They were an example to others. I know a man who now is doing the same for the children because one man did it for him. He didn't have a father. So one man in the parish would pull him with men who sang during the Mass. Especialy when they would sing the Pasion of Christ. There is a closed group of men who sing that. And every man would teach his son and bring him into the group if the boy could sing. When the boy is old enough. But if they would notice that some of the boys standing close to them in church can sing, even he isn't the child of one of them, they would invite him amongst them. Also they were an example to him.
Also chatolic men should take their Godfather role seriously. My brother and I grew up without a father. But his Comfirmation Godfather was an amazing rolemodel.
The same goes for woman too.
Bless your children, pray with them, show them that you are not perfect, they are not perfect, they dont have to be. Teach your kids this:
You do the best you can, as best as you can. God will do the rest.
Teach your son to respect everybody and to be a gentleman.
Teach your daughther to respect everyone and to not accept anything less then that. If you give your children a good example they will do as you do. Or they wont, but they will have the example. Respect elderly, protect them, be kind because you will be old the same like them. You will be treated the way you treat others. When you think you're not enough, you can't go on anymore, say :"Jesus, now you think"
Ask for help. He will help you. Men need to show more love and respect for Virgin Mary too. And pray with your family, pray, pray. Family that prays together can't be destroyed.

Believers to consider daily: prayers and Bible readings proclam it aloud in your lives and reclaim our relationship with GOD. Pray specially for the most annoying ones 😂 coz that one may most need your prayers.
Rosary is very powerful and is the NT in miniature.
The simple truth is we Protestants are wealthier households compared to Catholics as we only have the children we CAN AFFORD. Alcohol, gambling & pornography therefore is something we can push onto the poorer households (Catholics). They believe they're all sinners to begin with anyway.

I wish you guys would have been around when I was a young father. Even though my wife and I took our children to Mass, we really missed much of what you said and now have lost our children from the Church. We are trying to make up that lost ground, but they are very resentful, especially my son, who will not go back to church. It's very sad. I encourage all young men to heed what you are talking about. That lost ground will take a miracle to recover. Our Grandchildren have not been indoctrinated and probably won't be either. Huge loss.
I’m a young man who is interested in learning about Catholicism, but my brother is very apathetic about faith. He calls himself agnostic, but he tells me he really doesn’t care about it (I would call him apatheistic). We only got to interact with our father on weekends.
Same problem, kids fought me all the time bringing to mass, my 15yr old son is atheist and daughter won't go "it's not fair" as brother doesn't go. Wife doesn't go and told me not to force my daughter to go, so now I'm the only one. Very depressing.

I could tell you how to fix the problem of single mother families but women are not going to like it.
It's call removing the child support benefits. The majority of cases women are awarded primary custody of children therefore they get the child support. Well it's already a fact that most women don't use this money for their children. If the men were with the women in a relationship the cost of providing for their children would be significantly less than what is ordered by the courts for the men to pay in child support. And if the men can't pay the child support they are imprisoned.
It's the child support which enables women to leave men and to wait for marriage before having sex. Without the child support women would become more selective about who they sleep with knowing that there is no child support they would want a man committed to them to be there for their children financially.
But this could lead to more abortions.
If they just do *not* choose the broad way of loveless carnal lust with greed driven "lovers" (instead of the narrow path of Love with the husband God prepared for them) _for that reason_ it is of no use to anybody.
Recently I heard the remark: If you have to lose your virginity to learn something, *you learned nothing* .

Many good women have been left by crap men and the guys only pay about $200 a month and will not pay unless they have a job that reports it. Losing all child support is too generalizing.
Pull the log out of your own eye before you pull the speck out of theirs. If a woman lost her man, she either had poor judgement when she chose a bad man to be with, or she had a poor personality that drove a good man away. The same can be said about numerous men who lose their girl. They lack the humility to understand that marriage is not about them, but about the other (I am likely guilty as well). Child support/ alimony makes it all too easy for someone to profit off of a divorce, and many men have had their lives easily ruined by vengeful women (and often have nowhere to turn to for help).
I see all your points but that is not a solution which would lead to better family and spousal bonding but would lead us to a world we've already known: Men having more power and therefore leaving more women with the children and families they've both built. And women choosing Abortion over family support. We can work with the system to help both men and women to be better spouses and parents.
