Boeing "screwed the pooch" for not developing a successor. They had the chance in 2010=-2011 but cancelled the project and put all their eggs in the 737 Max basket.. The Max is not it, and now Boeing are looking at Airbus' contrails in the long haul thin market.
That's what happens when sales VPs and accountants determine projects instead of the engineers.
