that Chinese robot in a restaurant is actually a real person, she's the owner of the restaurant if i remember correctly. she acts like a robot more as entertainment for the guests
This reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom and I knew a shop owner downtown. I used to go behind the divider between the display window and the store. I would stand as still as I could or move like a robot. People would come up to the window and stare at me. Sometimes I’d stand very still and then suddenly I’d shoot my gaze directly at them and scare the crap out of them. 😂
A theory of why a lot of neurotypical people seem to bully and hate autistic folks more than seems reasonable is that we’re “different” enough socially (different facial movements, not quite getting social cues, sometimes being quirky or strange) that we trigger an uncanny valley type reaction. I’m not sure that’s true but it’s an interesting thought and would also mean that we can easily view other humans as uncanny

Police sketches and body reconstructions are purposely made to be uncanny so that they'll stick in your mind; if a criminal had a larger than average nose for example, sketch artists may make their nose comically big so that you remember that trait and are more likely to keep an eye out for it subconsciously. It's a pretty neat psychological trick and has helped a lot with identifying people, especially John and Jane Does
@@AJ-kk9xiomg that’s so interesting! I’ve seen some very questionable police sketches in relation to the actual person but they were still able to catch them from it. That makes more sense

In order for it to really be uncanny it definitely needs to be watched. The picture itself is very uncanny after seeing it, especially if you randomly woke up in the middle of the night to it playing like I did, but I see why he glossed over it. Would LOVE to see his reaction to it
I think it's not that any of these traits, by themselves, are creepy. Artificiality is creepy. Now, I don't believe the uncanny valley comes from a fear of literally artificial humans, that's just a symptom. The uncanny valley, IMO, comes from a smile that seems just too fake to be real, it comes from disingenuous people. The scariest thing is not finding a monster in the woods. The scariest thing is being alone and finding a random stranger in the woods, smile too wide, eyes too distant and cold, top put together, almost as if something is being planned behind your back, whispered in a sinister tone too low to hear. That's the uncanny valley, it is a phenomenon that comes not from a monster, but from within.
Okay.....well something happened to me 10 years ago that still gives me shivers down my spine...... I was walking in the a bad neighborhood on a sunny afternoon. And it was normally a busy street. But for some reason no cars were driving by for a minute or so. And no people out. So I am walking west on National Ave. And no one is around then I look up and I see a very tall slender man wearing a top hat walking straight towards me. His face was so pale. His facial features were monstrous. He looked like he was dressed from the 1800s. I got an overwhelming sense of dread and I knew I was about to walk past him. And he was walking very strange. My heart was pounding and I felt in danger. When he got closer I could smell an overpowering scent of like idk how to describe it. Dead flowers? And so now is the moment! We are crossing eachother on the sidewalk and I tell myself " don't look up don't look up". But then I thought maybe if I didnt look up I might offend. So I looked up to give a head nod. And I locked eyes with him and he was looking down at me SMILING. Teeth were SHARP and Jagged. Like a shark. His face was not..like noo this wasn't a human. This wasn't some disfigured person either. No this was like a vampire or a demon. Idk how to explain it!! I then began to have like a panic attack and considered calling the police because after he passed me I watched him started to peer in windows. Remember, with a top hat! And very tall. And then I caught my breath and thought about what I should do. I opened my phone. And then looked back down the street and the he was gone.... The the traffic started again. And I was wondering like... Did no one else see this?!?!?!? Who is ever going to believe me? Ughhhh I have no idea.....

As an autistic person, escaping the uncanny valley is something I have struggled with a lot during my life. I wish my facial muscles would just convey the emotions that I'm actually feeling, but they just... don't. So to communicate any given emotional state, I have to try my best to imitate what I think would be an appropriate facial expression. I have gotten better over the years, but I'm at a point where I doubt that I will ever get it completely right. Oh yeah, a vacant smile was my standard masking face during my teens because I never knew what to do with my face. I thought that would be inconspicuous enough. Until my teacher called my parents in because she believed I was either in the clutches of some weird cult or a possible school shooter. Fun times.

A good example of the uncanny valley is at a museum in my city. Its this quartet of mannequins that sing and move their mouths, but they have masks on that look like presidents...its really freaky.
6:00 Holy crap, that's Billy Bob! Was not expecting that. It's from an arcade/restaurant called Billy Bob's Wonderland here in West Virginia. I had my birthday at one back in the early 90's. There's an animatronic animal jug band that will play a "concert," and every one of the characters is absolutely horrifying. The original location is still up and running, but the animatronics no longer work. Serious FNAF vibes, it's hilarious in retrospect.
I remember seeing a picture of people from some small town in Norway, and their pictures gave off an uncanny valley vibe; they were just so subtly odd looking to me in a way I can't describe.
6:00 That's Billy Bob from the Pizza time showbiz theatre Rock-a-fire explosion, they shortly partnered with Chuck E Cheese in the 80's, than after they both became separate restaurants
The fact that we're so hardwired to be scared of things that look human but aren't implies that we evolved it as a defense mechanism. Which means at one point in our history it was deemed beneficial to be scared of something that could almost mimic a human but not quite
We probably adapted to it so we could stay away from corpses (looks like human, but surely something isn't right). If you see your fellow tribesman lying unmoving and messed up in the woods, then that would probably be a good idea to be more aware of your surroundings or just gtfo pf there as soon as possible.
I think eyes that are big but expressive can look gorgeous because of how unique and almost otherworldly it looks (basically like looking "alien" but in truly what I believe is a good way), and I think people like the actress Ella Purnell or the content creator Shiftymine are a good example of that, but when they're big, really open, and static without what seems like any amount of eyelid covering them, that's when it's really unsettling to me. Like you said, that woman turning her head instead of moving her eyes, combined with the lack of a full blink makes it look like she's an unfinished android scanning the environment for something, and the uncertainty about what that "something" is also makes it pretty scary.
I genuinely lay in bed awake trying to understand the "I am a real person" voice clips from the early 2000s I reckon All Time does the best video on it
I had clowns and Mickey Mouse show up at my preschool. That bear was from Showbiz pizza which was a Chucky Cheese competitor and had an animatronic stage show. Your nightmares were Gen X recreational activities.
I love you bringing up that we might look different than we think we do from non-human perspectives, because that’s my personal theory. I think that, say, when we meow at a cat, WE are the one being the skinwalker, a weirdo impersonating and creepily staring at and mimicking them. I think we’re also demons to them (eating, hunting, being just generally awful and destructive in their experience; imagine the stories they tell about us- I think a lot of the horror stories we tell are actually us tapping into animal and other nonhuman perspectives) most just DISCOUNT that they have perspectives so they don’t have to examine these things lol. They’d rather think humans are the only ones who have sentience, when that’s just another layer of the monstrousness- because don’t the most evil demons/monsters completely lack empathy, because they don’t even see other life forms (in this case, all life but human) as even worth considering?
We actually do interpret faces slightly differently to their actual shape, normally making them seem more symmetrical. But definitely not to the degree that we interpret faces to not look uncanny. What would the evolutionary point of that even be? Cats began meowing specifically to get human attention, I doubt they would be freaked out when we mimic them since that would kinda be the point. Plus maybe it’s just me but very cat I’ve meowed at doesn’t seem to care This does sound like a really cool book idea though, maybe from the perspective of someone who had a brain injury making it impossible for them to “filter” other peoples faces, making everybody seem like
@@basic6735 it’s an understanding I call Experiential Relativity. That everyone else is as alive with as vivid perspectives as we typically attribute to the human condition alone, and that their experiences go into the collective consciousness along with everything else (unbeknownst to humankind) and when we use our imaginations to tap into stories, theirs are there to be told too, but we translate it through the human perspective and therefore their role into a human one and their story into a human context. They are having experiences in the world and don’t understand the technology necessarily, a that crawling across a vast flat dryer lid is a space explorer traversing an alien ship. It can explain everything from cryptids to superheroes (insects living with amazing abilities we attribute to superheroes- flight, super strength, etc) to abductions: fish being caught and released, animals being trapped or tranq’d and then released, etc. Like I said horror stories of children being experimented on, the stories of mice and other innocent animals in labs (for example (one of many) the movie Old), human s3x slaves exist but they also exist as animals (breeding animals who have no choice when and to who they’re bred and then their children are sold away, or actively unfortunately, in European brothels and other horrible of places). I do intend to write a book about it someday. I really like the idea of telling a bunch of stories and then revealing it was never a human, though the audience assumed it was, and showing it was all animal, insect, or plant perspectives.

Felca's concluded that people are really right about the foundation: it's not good and not his color. P.S.: he hunchs his back as a joke about how tall and weird he is. He is 6.4 ft.
i like the idea that we look glitched to all the other animals! it'd be a cool idea for a scifi thingy! like maybe a sort of matrixy thing where we realize that humans are already ai and we look weird to organic creatures because we're inorganic creatures, but our technology corrects how we see each other.
dude that's awesome, someone make that into a book stat
@@flannelpillowcase6475 ty!! the only things r like dogs and cats being companions is kinda a plotnhole :p
That robot waitress is a real person. Shes the owner of a restaurant in China and is just really good at acting like a robot.
8:08 it’s from a video where a guy tries to prove whether a call operator is an automated recording/AI or a real person. Kind of an amusing video tbh
Also at 12:15, you need to look up the video for that image. The mannequin is actually a robot that sings in a creepy voice and moves. Look up “I feel fantastic”
1:09 haven't thought about lemon demon in a hot minute 😭
MASK OF MY OWN FACE MENTIONED??????
8:40 is a real "Jane Doe". It is a picture of an unidentified woman who was murdered.
*Greg holding a smile and staring at me* - not scary
*Greg holding a smile and staring at me while he has walking sound effects playing* - beyond terrifying
Yay!! So excited for more uncanny valley!
1:10 Neil Cicierega had the same thought and now it’s a song :3
I WAS LITERALLY JUST ABT TO COMMENT THAT LMAO
2:20 - I busted out laughing at that remark and woke my sleeping wife up in the process. The goofy springy sound effect made it even better. The funniest part is that I find myself agreeing with you; that doll does indeed look British.
I had to turn the video off at this point because I cracked up laughing and instantly knew I was going to keep my husband awake. 😂
these training mannequins look quite tame - the animated ones that move, cry and scream, however, they make me feel less fantastic
So glad I found you Greg, when I get overwhelmed by life or even other youtube content I come watch your comfy lil videos and I always feel better❤
"small mouth and big eyes is creepy" Meanwhile anime girls
When it's on a 2d drawing it's cute, when it's on a real person it's horrifying
how has greg never seen “i feel fantastic”, i feel like a screenshot from the video does not do it justice
My boyfriend is a ginger… during the warmer months his hair always looks more vibrant, can confirm that he is uncanny valley. He should really be the poster boy
Greg, what should I make my dog for dinner tonight?
Probably chocolate
Beef stroganoff
Beans on toast
Boil some chicken and add a little white rice. S/he will love it :)
@@Moccason Ew a brit
7:22 you can! I befriended a deer a few days ago. It was so polite it stood on its hind legs and shook my hand
We are real humans. We eat human food and use products specifically designed for humans.
Sunday's... gotta LOVE IT.
The homie GregBroDudeMan and Mr. Ballen uploads the same day... Sundays have been my favorite day for a while now!!
Great video once again man, keep up the good work
A good example of the uncanny valley is at a museum in my city.
Next time I go to my dentist, I’m gonna stare directly at him the entire time.
Like a year ago i randomly found this channel, and now i look forward to see you upload. Except this, you can keep this.
That thumbnail terrified me
1:06 Right when you said that, I heard Lemon Demon's "A Mask Of My Own Face" in my head (It's a great song btw lol)
17:26 These are actors that do really good bot act.
6:00 That's Billy Bob from the Pizza time showbiz theatre Rock-a-fire explosion, they shortly partnered with Chuck E Cheese in the 80's, than after they both became separate restaurants
17:32 Thats actually a real lady. She does that for her job.
That half blink expressionless stare thing you see on famous people sometimes is the result of recent botox. They're not actually lizards, sorry.
11:38 “ok” that took me out 😭
1:08 Lemon Demon fans will get this one….
6:44 does he know that’s an ad?
Kinda funny that the ad is so creepy that it works anyways 🤣
love your vids man
Ayooo videos like this usually all the way out but your commentary made me laugh hella hard 😂❤
Your uncanny valley videos are some of my favorites, it's how I discovered your channel!
1:09 theres an entire song about that lmao
8:00 "I am Gwyneth Paltrow".
🤣🤣
even when we're looking at the spookiest things, something about your videos is so relaxing to me haha keep it up
I genuinely lay in bed awake trying to understand the "I am a real person" voice clips from the early 2000s
I reckon All Time does the best video on it
1:09 lemon demon nature tapes mask of my own face
1:10 literally the song "Mask of my own face" by lemon demon
1:07 LEMON DEMON REFERENCE
Great video! Looking forward to maybe some more Liminal space content or maybe even explore some content of abandoned places from the 90’s/00’s.
9:38 i think 90% of all slowed down videos can look extremly creepy.
13:48 for me it's the verniers like neirly everyone it just feels unnatural
It really speaks to the depth of the creepiness on this subreddit that Greg sees Tara the Android and it's the most normal reaction of the video.
1:09 WAS THAT A LEMON DEMON REFRENCE
This vid was as educational as it was entertaining great work dude
I had clowns and Mickey Mouse show up at my preschool. That bear was from Showbiz pizza which was a Chucky Cheese competitor and had an animatronic stage show. Your nightmares were Gen X recreational activities.
the fact the uncanny valley exists means there was a time where humans need to be fearful of something that looked human but wasn't human
9:42 i fucking died at, GIVE ME YOUR LIGHT
You are my latest favorite tuber rn dude!!!
Wow… a mask of your own face… someone should write a song about that
I feel special staying until the last second of the video and seeing the different little gags
You said it would be weird to be wearing a mask of your own face but Lemon Demon made a song about just that.
BABE WAKE UP GREG JUST UPLOADED
A mask of my own face, I'd wear that.
I like your cadence and delivery. It's on point.
Plus maybe it’s just me but very cat I’ve meowed at doesn’t seem to care
This does sound like a really cool book idea though, maybe from the perspective of someone who had a brain injury making it impossible for them to “filter” other peoples faces, making everybody seem like
@@basic6735 it’s an understanding I call Experiential Relativity. That everyone else is as alive with as vivid perspectives as we typically attribute to the human condition alone, and that their experiences go into the collective consciousness along with everything
else (unbeknownst to humankind) and when we use our imaginations to tap into stories, theirs are there to be told too, but we translate it through the human perspective and therefore their role into a human one and their story into a human context.
@@highfae An interesting concept for sure. Would make for a sweet anthology series; I hope you do end up writing about it someday
