Sometimes the hardest thing for people to do is actually the easiest. And that is letting go. Maharishi in his book "Science of Being And Art of Living" says,' The technique requires no effort except innocence & simplicity. You must be devoid of intellectual play or emotional twist. You must surrender yourself to almighty nature. Then your mind goes in the direction of absolute bliss and finds increasing charm at every step of its march" You will evolve into a better and happier person.

Maharishi in his talks describes it as the "feeling of a child when mother is at home", beautifully put.

in TM, the mind completely settles down to the silent source of thought. When you learn, you need a teacher because otherwise you'd have to constantly be figuring out what to do next and whether you're doing it right - your mind can't settle down to silence if you're thinking like that. Once you know how to do it, then you meditate on your own. Sort of like learning to drive (but easier) - you're with the instructor at first but then you can be on your own.

@BradBrassman Definitely yes. Transcendental Meditation takes the mind beyond thought, lets it settle down completely. If you have to be constantly thinking about what to do and whether you're doing it correctly, then your mind can't settle down and you won't transcend. So when you first learn, you need a trained teacher who can make sure you're meditating correctly and having good experiences.

@MrHarrydash The mantra needs to have two important properties: First, it has to allow your mind to settle down to silence, to the source of thought. Second, it has to be suited to your individual physiology and psychology. TM teachers are trained to choose the correct mantra for each person, and the mantras are from an age-old tradition. Also, you need to learn how to use the mantra properly. Yes, it's very simple to practice TM, but it takes proper training to be able to teach it to everyone.

I understand how using a mantra skilfully can unfold within us a state of blissfully experienced self absorption (jnana) Concentration is crucial on the path but is it not insight that leads to breakthrough and nothing else? Please forgive me. I am sure that i am confused in my understanding.

The mantras are from printed lists based on age and gender which have been changed throughout the decades so describing them as chosen from an age-old tradition by trained teachers can be misinterpreted to mean more than it does.

I got in it in 1975 and did it a year or 2 and stopped. My life has been a disaster filled with bad decisions. It's late in the game but I am ready to go to an instructor and get my mantra updated and start again never to quite. What a shame I didn't stay with it. Please comment on this.

Find your nearest TM center. If you remember your mantra (discuss this issue further with the local TM teacher) it is trivial to start up your practice again. Make an appointment via www.tm.org and go from there.
      Good luck.

Explaining what is TM mantra is easy, BUT in actual meditation practice is not what everyone thinks is easy.

I feel that not every trained TM teacher are able to assign mantra that they think will fit them to meditate. The process of meditation must be explained clearly to learners why mantra is use and elaborate how mind adapts conditioning.
