He’s a Receiver not a rb they just would move him around to do everything
And he did make it too the nfl but just was not as successful in the nfl like he was in college
@@aidanbegley7732 thank you Aidan!
Tavon was a technically a wide receiver. In reality, he was a utility player. He could do it all at WVU!
WVU isn't a powerhouse school, EPL equivalent would be maybe West Ham, Tottenham, or Southhampton.
A similar school, I think you are more familiar with would be Virginia Tech. A major conference school , the type of team that has some big bowl wins, and a pretty good team most years, just not a championship caliber team like the top tier big SEC and Big Ten schools.
Historically they have the most wins of any team to never win the championship.
He's currently a free agent. He's one of those guys who tore it up in college but it didn't translate as well in the NFL.
Thought he was going to be the next Percy Harvin but Percy faded fast after leaving Minnesota.
If he had went to a better team he probly would of had a better career I mean this was the rams before their current coach
That’s a shame!
@@emtadamd9488 Percy didn’t do much for the Seahawks but I’ll always love the guy for the Super Bowl kick return. Such an electric moment.
@@Aderbj Seahawks are my team. He didn’t do a ton but when he was on the field, he flashed!
Everybody who has played football from the middle school to college level has seen this highlight tape atleast once if not multiple times. It’s a classic. He is a gadget player so he played both WR and RB but his primary position is WR. he didn’t pan out in the NFL sadly but still one of the greatest highlight tapes to ever be made
It was amazing! My favourite watch so far!
he did make it to the nfl and played on a few teams but just didn’t have as great of a career as he did in college but even staying on teams for 5 years or so is a crazy success so he isn’t going to the hall of fame but i wouldn’t say it didn’t pan out
@@TheNextGronk Yeah "didn't pan out" is probably a bad choice of words. The highlight tape makes it look like Austin was supposed to be the next Barry Sanders or something. Guess you kinda forget how hard it is just to stay in the league let alone to thrive in it.
@@__vx3Didn't pan out is pretty correct, considering his hype and draft position. 3500ish rushing+receiving yards over his 9 years, considering he was drafted 8th overall, it's not great. He wasn't Kevin white levels of disaster but I think a Darren sproles type of career was the hope for him
It is good that you guys notice the blocking. Football is a sport that has a lot of action away from the ball, such as the action at the line of scrimmage. Most sports all of the action involves the ball. In football there is action all over the field. The more you watch it, the more you will see. Remember no matter how good a running back or quarterback is, he must have a good line blocking for him.
Thank you Gregory. We’re still getting there, but trying to understand the blocking aspects more and more in each play! Appreciate the comment
@DN Reacts you guys are killing it. American football is very complex. Like human chess with collisions. You guys are picking up the nuances very early. Shows you already know sports, you're just learning a new one. Been fun watching.
Have you guys picked favorite NFL teams yet? Rooting interest makes every sport better.
If it's a passing play I actually watch the linemen/blocking because the wide receivers leave the frame. then i switch to the pass being thrown and then obviously whoever catches it. and if it's a run play i tend to watch the best offensive linemen or defensive linemen unti the rb makes a move
Tavon Austin was one of those guys who sort of defied position labelling. His position was “get him the ball.”
My personal favorite of these guys was Percy Harvin. He was a glitch in Madden haha
Thanks Roger! Makes sense. Percy Harvin worth a look?
@@DNReacts If you ask me, of course!
@@DNReacts percy harvin is absolutely worth a look. He juked people out of their socks
@@DNReactsno not really. He was good but not great. JJ Watt is 100% worth watching. Three time defensive player of the year
@@DNReactsPercy harvin was amazing...
Btw he is a WR but a lot of small fast guys like him are used in the running game too. They get the ball behind the line of scrimmage and basically try to make people miss for huge gains. He was supposed to be what tyreek hill is.
I know i’m not the only one who use to watch Tavon Austin highlights all day before I had a game😂
Great way to get pumped up!
I’d watch Marshawn Lynch and Earl Campbell highlights bc I liked running people over lol
@@xackwerley9184I did too, but my ACL decided to violently disagree with that lol
I watched this video 10 years ago when I was in 8th grade. The first song has been in my playlist ever since
Naw me too 😂😂
Nothing but facts 😂
Great song! 😅
Hilarious that thousands of people had the same experience. This video was a game changer lol
Watched this 10 times a day back in 2013-2014 while training for college football. Then a torn acl brought reality lol. My favorite college mixtape of all time
I would recommend a video called "The greatest regular season game of all time" 2018 Rams vs Chiefs. Absolutely incredible game that was back and forth the whole way.
That wasn’t one of the best games of all time. Any game or teams combined for over 100 points is not even close to qualifying to be one of the greatest games of all time. That just means half of each team forgot to show up.
@@gracielynn9623 yeah my bad I forgot the best game of all time was a 2-0 game in the rain in 1953
In one of your mic’d up reactions one of the players on the colts was fan girling over tavon austin and told him he used to watch his highlight tapes everyday in high school. A reference you wouldn’t have gotten at the time but yeah
Got to see him play in person many times. Him, Geno smith(qb) and Stedman bailey (other wr) were incredible to watch.
Would have loved to see him in person!
Those were such great times at WVU. I got to watch Pat White, Steve Slaton, Noel Devine, Geno, Tavon, Owen Schmitt, such an awesome time for WVU football. I never missed a game when I was a student there.
West Virginia had a small moment during the late 00s/early 10s where they were a top team. They had a perfect mix n match of players that transfered out of bigger schools or didn't get offered by a top school. So you had guys like Tavon Austin that just balled out. Some other players people remember are Pat White (QB), Steve Slaton (RB) and Pat McAfee (K/P). They had a player make the cover of NCAA Football on PSP one year. Great team but short lived
I would love to see you guys react to Charles Woodson. He beat Randy Moss & Peyton Manning for the Heisman while primarily playing Defense (first and only player in history, but he also played special teams & some offense). He led his team to a national title and would eventually be a HOFer! Truly one of a kind!
Thanks for the suggestion 😀
and Payton is still better
I'm surprised you haven't done Devin Hester yet. Greatest kick returner of all time.
We have 😀 coming soon!
He has Geno throwing to him. Great to see Geno getting his moments in the NFL. Country Roads!
Thanks for this!
Tavon Austin was a decent player for the past decade recently got phased out of the nfl. But the average nfl career is just under 4 years. Most players don’t make it past there first contract
West Virginia was a top 15 program from the 2000s-2012, they were a powerhouse in the late 80s as well. In 2016-2018 they had a bit of a resurgence but nothing too successful. I’m from WV and we have a diehard fan base for being such a small state lol. Awesome to see you guys watching this iconic tape✊
We're starting back up the ladder again
WV guy here. This team was great and the Tavon Highlight reel is CLASSIC. If you want to see more WVU Players check out the co-highlight reel of Pat White/Steve Slaton/Owen Schmidt! Otherwise known as Slash/Dash/Bash!!! WVU had some teams in the Dana Holgerson Era.
I was a huge fan of Pat White and Steve Slaton. I’m a Texans fan too and that 1 year Slaton had rushing for over 1k with Houston was amazing.
Easily the greatest highlight tape of all time, I still watch it before games to get myself hyped up and I’m in college now. This tape came out when I was in 6th grade!!
Think of Austin as the American football equivalent to say Moussa Diaby/Allen Saint-Maximin type player or maybe even a Sadio Mane. Smaller stature but just unbelievably quick, agile and elite top end speed. His NFL career didn't pan out that well sadly but man...he has arguably one of the most electric college highlight tapes EVER.
Tyrann Mathieu College and NFL highlights are worth a watch for football enthusiasts
Tavon was nominally a wide receiver, but the fun thing about college football is that these electric players can really play WR, RB and returner. Any way to get the ball into their hands.
You don’t see it as much in the pros because players at that level are much more specialized. Some players can fill multiple roles but a guy like Tavon was too small to play RB in the NFL, so he was mostly WR and returner whereas in college he did a decent bit of everything.
The NFL Draft is soon which is where college guys get selected to the pros. would be nice to see you guys react to either the history of the draft or just the upcoming talent
Yes Tavon did make it to the NFL and bounced around the league a bit but he wasn't a superstar like his college highlights would've led you to believe; he's currently a free agent (no team). I actually got to see him play in high school being from the same city. I didn't play against him as I wasn't on the football team but just watching you could see how far ahead of everyone else he was.
This highlight tape is by far the most influential sports highlight tape of all time. Every football player (American) has watched the video.
A good video to watch if you want to know how tavons career went is a video made by KTO called "the 2013 WR class..9 years later" it's not just about tavon but it's a good video and if you're going to do stuff about the draft I think this is a good video
I hadn't heard of Tavon Austin before. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks guys.
Ah yes the highlights all of us 90s and 00s kids watched. Good times
Gents, if you want to see the greatest punt and kick returner to ever play the game, look up Devin Hester. He played for the Hurricanes in college and the Bears in the NFL. He has every record in the pros.
WOW! Even a game as good as that wasn't enough. To this day WV has yet to bet OU in conference play.
50 - 49 was the final score. Damn, that was too close. Helluva game.
Not true, they beat OU this past season
yesss, thanks for checking this one out!
Greatest sports highlight reel of all time
Tavon Austin's highlight tape is WIDELY considered to be the best highlight tape ever. This guy was so so special in college. One of a kind.
Another great vid...(You know I am having my coffee and watching you guys when I leave a book for a comment)
Austin is a prime example on how a player can be a combo of RB/WR. He could be deployed either in the backfield or as a receiver, and it could still be a run or a pass from either position. This allows the coaches to get more creative.
Tavon did go on the NFL and had a modest 7-10 year career. The thing is that everyone in the NFL has skills on his level, in college his talent was just so much of a higher caliber than the competition he face.
2:55 that was actually a kick-off, 11:57 was a punt return , either the other team just scored or it was the beginning of a half. IF you like Kick returns, look up Devin Hester, DeSean Jackson, Brian Westbrook, Darren Sproles, and I am sure I am forgetting others that people will mention.
Number 1 in college is usually given to either the best player or a team captain. There are other numbers that are specifically important to their team due to historical reason, an example is 88 for the Dallas Cowboys, all of their best receivers in that teams history have worn 88, so if you are on that team and have a "legacy" number, you are a bad man!
Historically West Va. has been a middling power with periods of excellence
You guys should check out Devin Hester and Joshua Cribbs for punt/kick return highlights. I remember teams purposely punting out of bounds so Devin Hester couldn't return the punt.
Young players in the NFL these days still idolize this guy for what he’s done at WVU. His highlight tape was like everyone’s go to at a point in time.
Greatest highlight video ever made. Don’t think another one has close to the views this one has.
WVU is the winningest team in NCAA history that's never won the National Championship. Top 15 all time in wins. We aren't LSU, no. But we are certainly "A Brand" in college football. THANK YOU for covering this! I have a channel on WVU and would love to have you on sometime!!! Thanks guys.
It’s been just a few months and you guys sound like AF experts 😂 well done 👍🏼
One of the iconic videos of CZcams
Noel Devine is another running back from West Virginia. His highlight tape is really good. He didn’t make the NFL but nonetheless it’s worth a watch
I remember watching a high school highlight of Devine where he broke 13 tackles in one play. He was amazing to watch as well.
I used to watch this before every game for motivation 😹💯
Vince Young's college career would be good. He was a huge QB, 6'5" 230lbs with a cannon and ran a 4.4 40 yard dash. He was so big and fast...and the fact that he could pump-fake because he could actually make nasty off platform throws created a very difficult quandry for defensive coordinators.
Pay special attention to the clips where he is playing Ohio State University or USC. OSU was a top 10 team, and USC had back to back national championships. So those are the best of the best players he is just making look silly.
Naturally, as a Longhorn fan, he was/is my favorite QB. Really nice guy too.
Cheers 🍻
It’s the greatest highlight reel of all time
10:15
West Virginia are not a perennial powerhouse, but they are on occasion quite dangerous.
The state's population is quite small, meaning that the pool of in-state talent from which they draw is a bit shallow. However, they are quite near to/bordering other larger states which have an historic reputation for producing a lot of great players.
Ohio and Western Pennsylvania in particular seem to manufacture great players. I'm not certain whether it's still the case, but at one time, there used to be a high school all-star game between select teams from Pennsylvania and Ohio. It was often a showcase for players who would soon be playing for the most elite college teams in the country. The Mid-Atlantic region (most notably, Virginia) also generates a lot of talent.
Geography is extremely important for college football recruiting. Theoretically, a high school player can go to college anywhere. And sometimes, they pack up and go to a school thousands of miles from their home town. But, it is important to remember that they're kids, in the end. They're prone to homesickness and discomfort in unfamiliar surroundings. They generally want to play in a place where the culture is similar to home, where their families can see them play, etc.
This gives Southern schools a huge recruiting advantage. The region has got loads of talent, and southern kids, regardless of race, feel immensely strong cultural and family ties.
There was once a coach named Barry Switzer, who was a master at recruiting players from out of state.
He knew that the key to winning over a southern kid, was convincing his mother that his school (Oklahoma) was the best place for him. When he went on recruiting visits, he frequently spent 90% of his time charming the player's mother. If she was religious, he would talk about Jesus, quote scripture, etc. If she was concerned about violence in the player's home town, he talked about how safe Norman, Oklahoma was. If she didn't care about football and just wanted her boy to get an education, he spent two hours talking about the academic support the university provided to athletes. If she wanted her son in the NFL, he would invite Oklahoma alumni along and have them discuss the advantages Oklahoma players have over those from other schools at the professional level.
Switzer was a great character in college football... A good ol' boy from Arkansas whose father ran bootleg moonshine during alcohol prohibition. His teams were the chief rival of my home state university, therefore I remember him as the architect of broken hearts. But he was certainly quite colorful, and a damned fine football coach.
Tyler lockett. legion of boom. Greatest show on turf , iron curtain defense , cam chancellor. Ed reed . JJ watt. Jared Allan , Rey Lewis , Brian Urlacher , Frank Clark. Theres so many stars and great players . Defense highlights are amazing too.
What are the chances the first time I notice this channel is a reaction to a guy from my college? Crazy lol. I watched this guy as a student in 2010 at WVU, as well as Geno Smith who was QB at the time. Regarding WVU as a college football power, not so much in recent years, but during this era they were a solid top 20 team for awhile, and played in a few of the top bowl games. It's also worth noting that they recruit a lot of their top talent out of high schools in Florida.
Pat White, one of WVU's elite quarterbacks. He was able to change how WVU played football. He saved WVU football.
West Virginia was a good, competitive team in the Big East, before we made our premature move to the Big 12 conference, where we've been struggling ever since. However, WVU does still produce NFL-level players.
There is a series of 100 videos on you tube of each of the careers of the top 100 NFL players of all time . There is a LOT of great stuff there .
He started as an rb, then got converted to a slot receiver who would also like up as an rb sometimes his senior year.
He was a wide receiver.. great reaction guys ❤️
Thank you, really appreciate that 🙏
This was every kids childhood pump up video haha
It was so good!
Have to have to HAVE TO do Reggie Bush. Percy Harvin is another good one as someone else mentioned. But Reggie won a Heisman, and you guys already saw a little bit of him in your Texas/USC national championship video reaction.
Thank you for the comment and the suggestion, we really appreciate it 🤝 We’ve currently got Reggie Bush in a live Discord Poll. We run regular polls on our Discord for all members to have a say in what videos we do next if you’re not already on there 🙏
January 3, 1983: The Comeback
Buffalo Bills v Houston Oilers in a playoff game. The largest comeback EVER in a playoff game in NFL history. If y'all could do a react video to that, I'd be over the moon.
Love y'all's content and have been watching for a long time.
Know I’m super late on this, but Tavon is one of those guys who were just ahead of his generation when he entered the NFL. There wasn’t really a role for him at the time as he was primarily used as a hybrid back. Tavon was very small at the running back position, thus was expected to play fully at the receiver position in the NFL. That just wasn’t going to work in his case as although he had incredible speed, he didn’t really have the best hands nor did he have a developed route tree to get open against the top defenders. Had Tavon been going into the draft say within the last 5 years, he would likely be one of the premier players as a lot of the college style of play has translated to the NFL. It’s much higher paced, a lot more room for a guy of his size to be used in trick plays, as well as the opportunity to still be in the backfield as a running back. It’s incredibly unfortunate that he didn’t work out in the NFL to the expectations, but he still had a solid 9 year career on a few different teams. He also had to deal a lot with the sh0oting of his college and pro teammate Steadman Bailey who was completely knocked out of contact sports as the shot was to his head, thus making any head injury more fatal. Side note West Virginia has always been a fringe top school. If you’ve ever heard of Pat Mcaffe, you can look into the game that essentially drove him out of WVU sports entirely for over a decade. That season we were on pace to be national champions, but when I say within a 2 week time period it all came crashing down. Our program has never recovered despite the mid 2000’s success we had. Our state is quite poor, there isn’t a ton to do here outside of stuff in nature, so it’s not a premier destination for recruits. We’ve had a few decent years, but have never been able to capture those top spots. Thanks for watching Tavons highlights though, he’s a state treasure, as well as a part of any kid who’s ever taken football seriously. I’d venture to say that there isn’t a former or current player who hasn’t watched this video multiple times!
tavon was one of a kind. he was one of the unique revolutionary players that created the hybrid wr/rb position
With the sheer mass of athletes who play American football. Some are going to end up at colleges that aren’t necessarily powerhouses. But that’s apart of what’s great about the game.
Quick story time that I feel a lot of people can relate to.. Growing up playing QB/WR in middle school and high school (I'm 19 now), before almost every game or any time I and many others wanted to hype ourselves up, this exact Tavon Austin video was the go to. I feel like he's the most electrifying college player ever (Cam Newton, Reggie Bush, Jabrill Peppers are also up there for me) and so just to get into the zone, to try and feel like I was really gonna go out there and dominate, this highlight tape would be played on my little iPhone 5 or whatever I had before every game. Many kids to this day still do the same - he is such an inspiration to the youth.
Austin was a classic example of a guy getting drafted by the wrong team. When the Rams drafted him their coach was Jeff Fischer who was known for coaching teams with very little offensive creativity. He could never figure out how to use Austin and 5 years later when Austin was done with his rookie deal and left the Rams he was a shell of the guy from college.
If Andy Reid had drafted him he may have been a perennial pro bowl player like he made guys like Desean Jackson, Tyreek Hill, and Jeremy Macklin into who were smaller and faster players like Austin is.
Completely agree. There’s definitely an element of luck for certain types of players & particularly QBs. Get in a crappy system, or with a coach that doesn’t believe in you & it can really shorten a career.
*I'd highly recommend watching the Cardinals Vs. Packers 2009 n 2015 playoff games, they're MAGICAL*
Don’t remind me about 2015 I still have nightmares

West Virginia is only a few hours drive from Where Austin grew up- could explain why he went there - It’s a decent football school (often top 25 but has struggled lately- geno smith (current nfl qb) went there
West Virginia had a small window when they were a threat to win the championship, but would always get that one bad loss at the end that knocked them out for the chance to play for the then BCS championship. From 2009 with Pat White, Steve Slaton to 2013 with Tavon Austin and Geno Smith, the Mountaineers were a fun watch.
You fellas are so good with your knowledge and analysis of the college football game you should contract with a British TV network to call play by play of American College football games on TV in the UK….
He had a very lackluster NFL career.
I saw somebody suggest you watch something on the Legion of Boom. I agree with that. You guys would enjoy that. They we a lot of fun.
Tavon Austin is the reason WVU got its views up
bro was SOOOO far ahead of his time
life long wvu fan here. they’re not a big media market team and we don’t have many players get drafted so we don’t get as much attention, but we have had long streaks of success and have boasted many players worth checking out. pat white was the original Lamar Jackson. Check him out
Tavon was actually a wide receiver, but did play running back in a game against Oklahoma. He also ran a lot of reverses and screens.
You guys should react to NFL draft videos. The 2023 draft is happening in a few weeks so it would be cool to see you guys get the hang of it before this years draft
One of the best in college football. Sadly, did not really do much in the NFL. Great highlight reaction.
I don't know if you had watched it at this point but West Virginia was highlighted in the 2007 video. They were the last number 2 to lose.
Thanks Kevin!
Austin was a wide receiver that they used everywhere
he played slot wr but was a goat kick returner so basically a all around athlete
#1 is a symbolic number in football, you can only wear it if you're the best player on your team
"He's definitely a running back." 🤣🤣
I know, I should’ve stuck with WR following the first play! Then got distracted by too many things 😂
@@DNReacts I just started watching this today. I've binge watched a ton of them so far, and I'm loving it!
Fun fact about college is that the same number can be on offense and defense. So Tavon was #1. But there could be a guy on defense with the same number.
As a wvu fan and resident of wv, wvu will occasionally grace us in the top 25, even top 10, but will promptly choke in these situations. Normally we are unranked and struggling against the good teams and teams we should beat.
As a WVU fan I would love to go back to this era
also at 3:32 hes looking at the senior spirit section
Yeah I can imagine. That was a pretty cool Snow Globe you did against Penn State in Week 1. Loved that!
TAVON AUSTIN IS FROM BALTIMORE. HIS COUSIN WAS MY QB IN HIGH SCHOOL & HIS UNCLE WAS MY HEAD COACH
He played with the Rams. Just subscribed ❤👍🏿your comments
Watch Tavons high-school highlights or
Derrick Henry high-school highlights
Both are very impressive
WVU was preseason ranked #3 in the country in the 2007 video you watched a while back.. lol
You guys should react to nfl best play of each superbowl and tavon austin made it to the nfl but never was able to be what was shown in college but he wasnt bad in some seasons
Keep up the great content👍
Thank you for the suggestion, really appreciate the support!
Check out Michigans Blake Corum highlights. He is an upcoming senior for the Wolverine’s who is a returning 1st team all-American runningback for a consensus top 3 team in the country. Electric
You referenced it in this video a bit, but it could be interesting to see you watch videos exploring the reasons that some elite college football players don't go on to to great NFL careers. Some names that come to mind are LSU-JaMarcus Russell, Florida-Tim Tebow, and OSU-Troy Smith.
WV doesnt come up a lot, but when Tevon played they had some good teams... But if you want a really good game to watch, check out the WV vs Oklahoima 2008 Fiesta bowl
Wvu has had some exciting teams/players throughout the years (not so much lately). Check out Noel Devine, Steve Slaton, Pat White, Geno Smith.
Sometimes guys are just spectacular athletes, but they don’t have the football skills to have long and fruitful careers. To boot, Austin is really small: he wasn’t built to last.
Great job with the reactions, guys. Really entertaining. I'd recommend you guys check out jerry rice. He is the all-time touchdowns leader and generally thought of as one of the best, if not the best, non qb player. You also might enjoy Calvin Johnson highlights.
I would highly recommend watching a video about Von Miller, one of the best outside linebackers I have ever seen
Yeah, Tavon's listed at WR :)
Sadly never translated to the NFL, he had a couple of okay years
The number 1 and other single digit numbers are commonly used for the faster players, kinda like wingers in soccer
Thank you Spencer!
Tavon Austin is an undersized receiver with a special skillset. He made it to the NFL but nobody really utilized those skills in a game plan. He was mediocre at best in the NFL. But he never had a coach who used him like the Percy Harvin type he was. It's a shame actually. And West Virginia was a solid team for a while in college. The Pat White-Geno Smith years were the years I went to school there and they were in the running for the national championship (2008 I think) one year and always made a bowl game often good ones. Had some fire running backs also with Steve Slaton and Noel Devine. You'd probably love Pat White highlights.
You can see by these highlights why he didn't really make a splash in the NFL. He avoids contact as much as possible. You can see how many times he runs out of bounds. He would make a better kick returner than rb. Also he goes down on first contact most of the time.
Wow. We sure pick some obscure names for these guys to react to when they are just starting out
It was a great watch!
You guys should watch Reggie Bush college highlights. Probably the craziest highlight reel I've ever seen, just makes guys look ridiculous
I had forgotten about Tavon. I know he didn't have the same impact in the NFL because only very best make the NFL you are immediately among peers and not guys you can dominate. The NFL has all of the fastest, strongest athletes and skilled players. They why guys like Barry, Randy, and Troy Poluamalu and considered the best because they dominated in a league with some of the best athletes in the world. ♠
You need to check out Karl Joseph’s career highlights clip. Legendary WVU defenseman.
Also Tavon’s QB in this clip is
Geno Smith, the Seattle Seahawks QB and NFL comeback player of the year 2023…
you guys should watch Bijan Robinson highlight! never seen anyone move like he does and he is about to drafted in the top 10 of the NFL draft in 3 weeks
