  • Alice Springs Mayor Matt Paterson says the “absolute carnage” taking place in his town is heart-breaking as the crime situation ramps up.
He said all crime statistics are going the “wrong direction”, with house and commercial break-ins rising as well as domestic violence calls.
“We got told that more policing down here is not sustainable for Alice Springs, well the level of crime and anti-social behaviour here is not sustainable for Alice Springs to continue either,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray.

I was born and raised in Alice Springs and have lived here for most of my life, and in that time I have seen many changes, some good and some bad. In nearly 50 years of living here I have seen floods, droughts, bush fires, and many a famous celebrities, and infamous cases, like the Azaria Chamberlain case or the Peter Falconio murder, but I have never seen crime of this kind or the scale of violence that is seen every day. I work in hospitality and have so in over 20 years, and I can tell you that tourism has dropped dramatically over the years. And the problem is not just in Alice Springs, but through out the Northern Territory. People who hear about the level of crime and violence don't want to come here, and honestly I can't say I blame them. A few people to come here and they are shocked in what they see. It's not what I want people to see or experience, for the Northern Territory has so much for visitors to see and do. Now before anyone can say that I am being dramatic or racist, let me tell you that I am indigenous man and like many other indigenous people who were born here, we want our town back, not in hands of other indigenous individuals who don't live here, who act like thugs. Right now the laws favour the criminal elements and don't do justice for hard working taxpayers, and that needs to change. To the politicians of Australia, do something right now, or come the next elections you'll be out of job.

I was in Alice Springs nearly five years ago for 7 weeks and fell in love with area. The McDonald ranges are hauntingly beautiful. I am so sorry for what the residents of the Alice are going through now, and that outsiders are giving the locals a bad name. People in the city really know nothing of your culture apart from what is put on show for the tourists. Aboriginal people in remote areas are trying to live by tribal law and the white man's laws too. Doesn't work, add drugs and alcohol and you have a recipe for disaster. For all people. I recall the Communist Party's hysterical and negative response to John Howard's intervention in the naughties. It's ironic though that many community elders remarked that the intervention was "the best thing that's ever happened to us" and were grateful to the Federal Liberal Party and the ADF members who delivered medical, dental and supportive services to remote communities. Clearly there are massive problems with the aboriginal population there, made worse by successive government policies. All the left have in response to problems they invariably make is more virtue signalling, but sorting out lawlessness requires a firm, uncompromising hand, and the current Australian government or even the previous liberal government is incapable of being strong because they fear the bleeding heart leftie brigade. For this reason nothing will be done and Alice Springs will only get worse.

The Solomon Islands, a country located in the Pacific Ocean, experienced a period of civil unrest in the early 2000s, similarly. The town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia, has recently been facing a number of social and economic issues, including high rates of crime and unemployment. In response to the crisis in Solomon's, the Australian government sent the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to assist in restoring order and maintaining peace in the region. Similarly, in light of the challenges facing Alice Springs, the local government has reached out to the Federal Government for assistance in addressing these problems.
However, it appears that the current attitude of the Federal Government towards the situation in Alice Springs has been less than responsive. Even though the local government of Alice Springs had extended an invitation for assistance, the Federal Government has yet to take meaningful action. It is unclear what has caused this lack of action, but it is a concerning development for the people of Alice Springs, who continue to face significant challenges in their communities.

Law and order should NEVER EVER be a political issue. Law-abiding citizens have a right to feel safe WHEREVER they choose to live. If the federal government refuses to help these people simply because they are voters that traditionally support the opposing party (for example by supporting Liberal), Albanese should voluntarily resign as PM for failure to perform one of the most basic functions of government: maintaining law and order. What kind of country are we in that we can just change the rules regarding access to alcohol, and just those changes can cause a whole community to run amok and get terrorised mainly by bored juvenile delinquents?
The only things that I can see that will work are by locking up the kids causing all the trouble for a good while (to give them time to change their ways) and reinstating the previous alcohol ban because the current situation clearly doesn't work.

@@kerilockwood7819 Keri, I lived up in the Pilbara for 7 years…the bottolo has a cage around it, security on the gate, but the indigenous send one person in to get the alcohol for them, sit around the town getting plastered, then Harassing the shops, people going about their business. We couldnt buy fruit one day because one drunk indigenous person stripped off, ran into the shop & rubbed himself all over the fruit…this is what happens. You have to live there to really see what goes on…now given that we only had 1 truck a week come up to bring supplies to the store…I can tell you there was a shortage of fruit on the family table that week. You learn to buy only on packages, you padlock your outdoor fridges (yes we had outdoor fridges for cold drinks) anything that you dont want stolen & you dont leave any cash in your car…they will smash your car windows to get it. In one week we had a windscreen in 1 car and 2 side windows in another to replace. You didnt have lock up garages in the mining town I lived in so you were limited. Car insurance up there is through the roof, likewise house insurance. Its a terrible way to live and if you take away alcohol altogether from all the people who live there, you have unhappy workers, who work hard in the heat & red dirty for their money…its impossible, the have systems for the bottle stores, they break into your property to get what they want & the only way to get around all the…bring back closed towns for the workers. There needs to also be more responsibility by the indigenous authorities to do more to help their own people too. Just blaming everyone else for the problems within their communities and asking for more Govt funding is not the answer. Its not easy to live, work and be safe in these areas, I still have children & family living in the Pilbara and they are sick of the car theft, the break-ins & crime up there. Its bad.
