I used to be just like that. I was always go go go, thinking that I have to be on the next job now. Now I know that the world won't stop spinning if I take 15 minutes to put everything where it belongs. GO BERT !

I have multiple quick grab buckets with tools and consumables like foil tape, cleaners, spare wire nuts and fuses, carb cleaner, break sways I have another couple buckets for boiler work, one for furnace work and gas piping. One side of the van is tools, the other side is parts. I’ve found that really helps especially if I’ve got a guy with me who’s new or doesn’t normally ride with me

Looks like mine after a heat wave. Or several days in a row emergency calls with no off time in between or several days in a row leaving an extra hour or two early to squeeze in another job or two every day or two or three weeks in a row of working late nights seven days a week. Or never having one un-billable hour in the last 27 years. With no dead time in between days

100% understand where you are coming from, our shared van looked just like that. I worked with my dad who recently got a new job but I'm staying behind, and he was bad about not putting things back where they go. Nothing was organized, it was all just thrown somewhere in the van, and I was constantly hunting for something simple. Just the other week he needed a 3/4 pvc end cap for a condensate drain, so I went to the van and started searching. We had a big crate with every type of fitting just tossed in it, and I never could find one. He ended up making something work, so we went back to the shop where I dumped the container to make I divider system for it. Ended up finding about 10 end caps immediately. Now that he has left, I've been able to make a bunch of organizers and finally get it someone organized. Also, he would always say the van was dirty due to us not having time to clean, but I called bull crap. I'm going to start spending about 5 minutes after each call putting everything where it goes so that the van stays organized. Hope you learn something and will keep your van clean.

It's just like my coworker bill. I'm the new guy, and one of the things I do to stay busy is clean his van, cause no matter how many times you clean it, it always gets super messy. I could organize it on Monday and by Thursday it's crazy messy again lol. Maybe I gotta send this to him lol

I have a coworker that keeps his van in a way that makes Berts messy van look clean. It is know by everyone in the company that his van is a complete and utter disaster. Mine gets messy at times but I have been making a more conscious effort to put things back where they go while still on the job I am at before moving on to the next one. When I am on a job with him he doesn't even bother to look in his van for parts he just asks if I have it on mine. I know it is because it is faster to get it from my van than to rummage thru his to find what he is looking for. Every time I look into his van it kicks the anxiety up a notch

Thanks for the article I’ll check it out.

The problem is , if you live in a flat and don't have a house or a garage , and you work back to back jobs and once you finally get home through heavy traffic and all that , when and where can you properly take care of your van ?
I don't live in a house and I can't even park the van close to me , that makes keeping the van organized a bit tricky , especially since my van is quite compact and doesn't have much space inside ...

Let me start out by saying I am not a hater but have 30 years tech experience and 43 years electrician yes that makes me 61.. I can’t believe you posted this. I am thinking that is a spare van. My van has never looked like this no matter how busy it got. Putting things away after each job is part of the job. If you start out organized keep it that way your performance will greatly improve plus you will have less broken tools and parts. I have proved it over and over I can do more calls then the average tech because I am organized, I have everything in kits even my tool bags are organized. I clean my cab every Sunday even when on call. When it comes time for raises and review my company checks vans. I didn’t see a lot of parts on your van does the customer pay you to go to the supply house? Much more efficient to keep fast moving parts not only you save time but save your customer the expense.I like your videos but this one blew my mind.

I did not post this to pat myself on the back. I am sorry if this seemed like an attack against you. True everyone is at different levels. The point I was trying to make customers look into vans a van like that one is also a reflection on the contractor or your own company. Young people coming into the trade should not have the idea this is ok. Unfortunately there are many that do have vans like this. Customers are not as trusting as they were many years ago. I am again sorry if this was taken as a attack I am just sharing my experience. I was young once.

@@ronpowdrell6608 I am a customer and damn right I am looking into the van's of techs to get a feeling for the quality of work I can expect. Roofers, Electricians,, Plumbers. . . Look at their workspace and vans and you can tell how good they are. Rarely you might find a slob who is good at what he does but that is an exception and not the rule.

IT starts out good, keeping the truck clean and neat. but if you are out of town and the THING you need for a job is back at the shop Nobody wants to pay for a return visit, all hell breaks loose. Or the just one more call, that turns into 3 hours. You want to get some food in your belly, before you pass out from exhaustion. same old same old, don't worry, it's all your fault. from Canada.

Our regulator broke by falling out the van a few years ago. What we ended up doing was getting two plugs to cap off the gauge holes since we mainly use ours to blow out drains and stuff. But, we also have a second gauge that is pretty much brand new which we use for purging when soldering.
